"Artistic Landscapes Inc. was one of many companies we talked to and received quotes from about installing a boulder retaining wall in our backyard to replace aging railroad ties and decking. The backyard is sloped with very limited access to move materials and equipment, therefore many of the companies we spoke with responded with either limited options for landscape ideas or unaffordable prices. Chris came out, listened to our ideas, gave us some of his and told us exactly what we could expect; he quickly put a bid together and we were elated it fell within our budget.

He and his crew not only worked around the limited access issues, but challenging weather including rain and wet conditions/clay soils. In addition to an approximate 60 foot long boulder retaining wall, they installed 33 paver stones for a pathway, steps as a feature area, additional large boulders for aesthetic enhancements and graded the area to address critical storm water runoff needs. The placement of each stone/boulder was clearly thought through, resulting in a unique and attractive wall versus many of the standard "one on top of the other" looks.

Toward the end there were a few minor tweaks we requested to which Chris and his crew were more than happy to accommodate until they knew we were completely satisfied. Clean up was fabulous too; our front yard damaged by major equipment during the process (which we knew was necessary) was fully restored as promised!

Chris was good to communicate with and very trustworthy in terms of what he committed to delivering. I would recommend Artistic Landscapes to anyone seeking quality work at a fair price, and by someone who knows what works and what doesn't. We absolutely love our new backyard...thanks Chris and Artistic Landscapes!

"Quick response to our inquiry; punctual for the appointments and to begin the project. Very professional and engaging. Al offered several great ideas and matched our project cost to our budget. Plan was to cut down  all the weed growth on our cliff of a hill, spray everything with weed killer, cover the whole area with dormant seeded crown vetch which would germinate with the spring thaw and retake the hill with a solid ground cover. Unfortunately there is a crown vetch shortage so we are paused after phase 1. We will resume the project in the spring when hopefully the seed product is available.

Customers say: Quality work

"My back-yard perimeter garden had become quite a mess with 50- year old rotting railroad ties, weed trees and shrubs, and out of control ferns and grapevines. Not only did it look bad but I didn't really need or want the garden which had been put there by a previous owner of my house. My plan was to eliminate most of the garden by converting it to grass (lawn) and then improve the part of the garden that I was going to keep. After doing some research on Angie's List, I contacted Tom Steele from Steeleman's Landscapes and am very glad that I did! Tom set up a time to come to my house and view my situation immediately whereas other contractors said they could not come out for several weeks. Tom listened carefully to my vision for my back-yard but also steered me in a better direction when needed which ended up giving me a better result. For example, he convinced me to convert the two corners of my back-yard garden to lawn instead of keeping them which was the right way to go for a cleaner, more streamlined look. He also advised me to use grass seed instead of sod on the newly converted lawn areas because the grass color will blend into the existing lawn better. Tom wrote up a proposal which I agreed to and he put me on his schedule to do the work. When the scheduled date came a month later, Tom showed up with his crew and I was glad to see him there personally involved and supervising the work that we discussed. He was also receptive to my input as the project progressed and I saw some items I wanted changed or modified slightly. It took Tom and his crew two days to complete the work and I was very happy with the result. A much cleaner and more open look to my backyard with more lawn space for outdoor activities. The part of the perimeter garden that remained along the back fence was much improved with the addition of Fond du Lac stone edging and new ornamental grass to go with the existing Hosta plants. Tom is a good guy who is dependable and easy to work with and I highly recommend him and the landscape services that he provides. Note: This work was completed on July 3rd, 2019."

"Jerry and his crew were great! We foster a lot of rescue dogs so it was impossible to grow grass in our yard and we were tired of the mud pit every time it rained or snow melted. Turf was a great solution and the dogs love it. Jerry took his time explaining our options that would be best for dogs. They were courteous and fast with installation. Highly recommend them."

FAQs for landscaping projects in Eagan, MN

Landscapers typically charge $25 to $50 per person per hour, which equals around $50 to $100 per hour for a two-person crew. These rates can vary depending on your location, the size of staff needed for the job, and overall job type. For example, a larger crew will be needed for structural additions and hardscaping versus planting flowers.

When it comes to landscapers, licensing laws vary. Landscaping architects are required to be licensed in all 50 states, whereas traditional landscaping contractors are not typically required to hold a certification. You’ll likely be working with a landscaping contractor for most residential projects. If you are redesigning your whole yard or adding in hardscape features, you will work with a landscaping architect at some point during the project. Be sure to check our state licensing tool to review the local landscaper guidelines.

As you browse our pro listings, take note of the “Angi Approved” badge. Angi Approved businesses meet our standards for certification which include:

  • The owner, principal, or relevant manager passed a criminal background check

  • Required to have applicable state and local licenses

  • Maintain an average star rating of 3.0 or better on our network, if they have at least one review

  • Paying to advertise their services

  • Meeting any other eligibility criteria required by Angi

Keep in mind licensing is different from certifications. A license is a legal requirement to operate a business, while certifications are voluntary.

If you want landscaping done but want to save some money on the overall fees, you can do a few things at every stage. Some ways to save money on your landscaping include:

  • Repurpose existing features and materials

  • Softscape instead of hardscape

  • Choose the more inexpensive materials

  • DIY when you can

  • Buy young plants instead of mature ones

If you are an avid DIYer and have plenty of time to dedicate to your yard, doing your own landscaping (or at least some of it) can be an affordable option. Projects like planting a tree, planting grass, laying sod, or building a firepit can realistically be done without the need for a landscaping professional. However, these projects can take considerable time and some landscaping knowledge, so having a pro might save you in the long run.

Projects that are dangerous, like digging with heavy machinery or removing a tree, should always be done by a professional.

Landscaping costs around $3,500 but varies widely from $200 to $14,000. Factors that play a part in your final landscaping price tag include:

  • Location

  • Yard size

  • Project size

  • Materials

  • Land preparation

  • Type of landscaping

Considering so many factors, it’s not surprising that the overall costs can differ. A typical landscaping project is flower bed installation, which averages between $800 and $3,000. However, landscape lighting installation is a higher-end project, with a price tag of $2,000 to $6,000
