"Allen and his team were excellent. They were extremely thorough. They worked long hours and on weekends to get the project completed (we had an emergency job). Other contractors commented on their high quality work. Will definitely hire again"

"Bill (the proprietor) responded promptly to my request for a quote for the work I needed done. He came out, reviewed the tasks, and provided a written quote. However, his schedule was full and he said it would be a month or so before he could start. Once he started, he and Joe (his helper) worked as quickly as possible as weather and daylight permitted, since it was winter and all the work was outside.

Bill and Joe did excellent work, and they were very conscientious about doing the best job they could. I am very impressed with the quality of their work and with their determination to get it done right. Some of the tasks were very challenging, especially the repairs of rotted wood in several door and window frames, but Bill stuck to it and completed everything except one window (which was rotted so badly that it will have to be replaced). They always went out of their way to do the job well, but were very reasonable when it came to charging for their work. They also did an excellent job of cleaning up after they finished each day and of removing and disposing of trash.

My only quibble is that Bill is apparently so good at what he does, and his reputation is so strong, that he books up well in advance and it is hard for him to respond promptly to short-fuse projects. Luckily my needs were not urgent and I was able to wait until he could schedule me in.

Overall, an outstanding contractor, exceptionally professional, and a pleasure to deal with. I will definitely be calling on him again for future projects around the house."

"Mr. Gámez had good suggestions on how to meet our design goals in these spaces. The work was done very professionally and looks fantastic. The work crews were skilled and conscientious and were a pleasure to work with. Workers were on site 6 days a week during the work period and the work was completed in only 5 1/2 weeks. We had none of the usual contractor horror stories, only a very smooth experience. We highly recommend Omar’s for painting and remodeling work of any kind."

"We spent a long time interviewing contractors to handle our kitchen remodel, and finally settled on VKB - and we are very, very happy that we did! Their showroom is great, and they really were "one-stop shopping." It was so convenient to be able to go to one location to design our new kitchen and choose finishes, cabinets, counters, knobs, tile. Our project manager, Ferhat, and his crew chief, Jose, were extremely professional and courteous. As with any construction project, there were a few hiccups, but the most important part (and in our opinion, what makes VKB great) is that Ferhat and his crew always, ALWAYS, said "We will fix it / solve that problem / make it happen" - and they did. When it came to the stair railing, I wasn't sure how to describe what I wanted, so I simply texted a picture of what I wanted to our project manager, and he recreated it perfectly. Talk about easy!! The crew was conscientious of our home, our pets, and our family, and we never worried about leaving them there alone. It was fun to come home at the end of the day and see the progress. Ferhat and his crew responded to our questions and concerns, and made us feel at ease during this process. Best of all was that they promised they'd be finished with this huge project by Christmas - and they were. Would highly recommend to anyone considering a remodeling project."

"Overall, the quality of work was very good. The bathrooms look AMAZING! They also finished the project within the anticipated timeline, which was the major reason we chose Willis for this project. They did two bathrooms faster than some companies could promise one (4 weeks to fully functional - a few details took longer to complete due to backordered parts). We had some communication and punctuality issues with the project manager, and I felt like I had to manage him and keep tabs on everything that was happening, which was frustrating at times. However, whenever I would discover something had been done wrong, they'd say, "okay, we'll fix it" and did so without complaint, even if it took multiple attempts to get it right. And most important, they never tried to stick us with the bill if it was their mistake. One thing to be aware of is that their quotes are for labor only. The customer is responsible for purchasing the big items (tile, vanity, tub, etc. - often with contractor discounts), and Willis buys the basic construction materials as they're needed (cement board, PVC pipe, paint, adhesives, etc.), which the customer reimburses at cost. So be sure to factor in the materials when comparing with other contractors that include those things in their bids. We reimbursed Willis almost exactly $2,000 for materials for the two bathrooms."

"Finally, a top-notch and honest contractor!!! I highly recommend this company if you want things done right. Jose and his team did an exceptional job with the layout, framing and design of a half-bath in the basement of my home. I love my new bathroom. I couldnt be more pleased. Jose delivered on what he promised. I so look forward to our next project. Many kudos to the team (Jose, Gladys, Eric and Leo). Thank you so much. Client forever..."

Unfinished Carpentry questions, answered by experts

Installing a tongue-and-groove wall requires similar techniques to those associated with installing shiplap. However, because of the precision necessary to make each board fit perfectly and the increased material prices, the cost is higher than that of shiplap installations. Expect to spend between $2 and $6 more per square foot for tongue-and-groove walls versus shiplap ones.

Baseboards don’t have to be nailed into studs. However, nailing them into studs adds to their stability. When studs aren’t available, you can secure them with drywall nails directly into the drywall and adhesive. Always aim to nail into studs, especially in high-traffic or impact-prone areas.

There are a variety of second-story deck privacy ideas depending on your budget and aesthetic. For starters, you might consider fencing or tall privacy railing that masks a good portion of the open deck. A pergola or an awning can provide additional cover and shade. Outdoor curtains are an easy way to add or remove privacy at your convenience, plus they’re a wallet-friendly way to decorate your deck.

If you remove a load-bearing wall to create an entrance to a carport or covered patio, you can expect to pay between $3,200 and $9,500, with an average cost of $6,400. Factors such as the type of addition and if that area needs additional work will add to the price.

Removing a load-bearing wall affects the structural integrity of your home, so you’ll need a permit before starting the work. Building codes vary by municipality, and obtaining a permit and having the work inspected after completion will ensure you’re in compliance with all applicable regulations.
