"Mr. Hoffman provided a detailed sketch, including a chart that showed what would be planted where. He worked with us on an additional detail that we ultimately decided not to incorporate. He went with us to a place that sold pavers, to help us make a selection. He told us when the work would be scheduled. He showed up when he said he would. The crew worked each day until the project was completed. The finished product is beautiful, and definitely looks even nicer than we would have expected. The project came in on budget, except for a last-minute extra we requested."

"It was a pleasure working with Kyle and his company! Very responsive to emails and provided different landscaping options for us to review. We are very happy with the end result and would most definitely recommend them for landscaping.

"After receiving 3 estimates to have a 14 year old deck replaced we decided to go with Freedom Fence & Deck, my husband and I are so glad we did. Dan was very knowledgeable and professional; he was so helpful explaining the best product to use for our new deck. We received an estimate to tear the old deck down and replaced the new deck before Dan left our home. Dan & Candy, the office manager, followed up with the permits & our HOA requirements. The approximate period of time to get the deck started and to finish were as agreed on our contract. The crew, Whitey & Cody was very knowledgeable & hard working, great workmanship from start to finish. The deck was completed in a very reasonable time during very hot weather. They both were very personable & answered all our questions. Whitey & Cody cleaned up the work area everyday and made sure we were comfortable with the progress made on the job each day. We cannot thank you enough for your excellent service. The deck is a prime example of your hard work and dedication. We are looking forward to enjoying our deck for many years."

Customers say: True professional

"This was the third time in one year that we’ve hired MD Legacy for a major landscaping job, and just like before, they totally knocked it out of the park! We came up with our own special design for a new stone garden wall, and they worked creatively and tirelessly to bring our vision to life. Even when the stone supplier delivered the wrong materials the day before, Eric rectified the situation as quickly as possible—and the very talented crew (Carlos, Jose, and Eric’s dad Reggie) worked extra long the second day to finish on time. The finished wall perfectly complements the shape of our property, and we can’t wait to start planting in it. And on top of their impeccable work, the whole team is so friendly and considerate—Jose even took the extra step of using a blower on all the cars down the street to make sure they were clean from any stone dust. We’re already looking forward to them coming back soon for the next improvement!"

"The team of Alan, Jose and Zach worked diligently for two days to stabilize my foundation. They were extremely professional and friendly. Jose actually took the time to show me why I had a problem and how to prevent future damage. I am extremely pleased with the work they performed. It is nice to have the before and after pictures and know they stand behind their work. Both days, someone came out and checked on the progress and inspected the work. I highly recommend using JES for all of your foundation needs. Laura"

"Gentleman representing the company showed up as scheduled.  He took a look at the basement, took some measurements, completed some documentation which ultimately didn't help us out.  Situation:  Moisture is coming in through the walls due to poor soil/soil drainage outside the house.  Unfortunately, this company doesn't do regrading, landscaping, or fix drainage problems causing the problem to begin with.  They recommend a product on the concept that your walls are coming in and you need to fix the symptom.  Perhaps, the concept works for folks, but the estimate didn't help in my case.

"Friendly, punctual and professional staff. They took down two trees for me, shred the small branches, cut the tree into logs and left for me to burn in my fire pit. I was very impressed with our first meeting for the estimate quote. Looked at the trees and gave me an estimate later that.evening. I can now sit on my back porch and look at the marsh with no obstructions. Thank you Culpepper & Sons Contractors. You did an excellent job and I am forever greatfull!!!"

"Outdoor advantage did a superb job. They removed a large (20x12) fish pond that had been in place for over 30 years. They had to haul away about 6 tons of field stone then create a flat and level surface for the pool. They then seeded and put straw down on the bare area. They showed up on time and finished at the end of the day. Outdoor advantage is my go to company for any landscaping project. I've used them many times and wouldn't hesitate to use them in the future."

Masonry questions, answered by experts

You may not need a hammer drill if you’re planning on drilling one or two very small diameter holes in brick. For holes with a diameter of 3/16-inch or less, a regular drill with a masonry bit can do the job. However, the bit will heat up quickly, and the process will take significantly longer than with a hammer drill. Prepare to cool your drill bit down in a bucket of water more often.

According to the Earthquake Country Alliance—a public and private alliance in California that works to improve earthquake and tsunami readiness—reports that unreinforced masonry, such as stone, bricks, and hollow clay tiles, is more susceptible to earthquake damage. The mortar between bricks isn’t as stable as other building materials and methods.

To stain brick, you should use a product specifically formulated for brick, concrete, or other masonry surfaces. These stains are designed to penetrate the porous surface of the brick and bond with it. This is different from paint, which sits on the surface and is prone to peeling, flaking, and trapping moisture that can cause damage. Water-based brick stains are often recommended because they are easy to apply, even for DIYers, and they allow the brick to breathe. Avoid using regular paint on brick, as it will not adhere properly and can lead to future maintenance problems.

Spalling brick is not uncommon, but it does indicate a serious issue. It can be caused by water damage, an intense freeze-thaw cycle, or something else. Painted bricks can be susceptible to spalling, as the paint doesn’t allow the porous material of the brick to breathe, which can trap moisture. Spalling should always be addressed immediately before more serious structural damage occurs.

Yes, but used or reclaimed bricks can be more brittle, cracked, or uneven than new bricks, so they’re harder to cut cleanly by hand. For that reason, you should take extra care when scoring and striking, and expect a higher chance of breakage. If a brick feels especially fragile, score deeper before attempting to split it.
