"My husband and I live in a historic rowhome, and we were very nervous about finding a company we could trust to give us what we wanted but also know what would work in our house. We interviewed a few companies, and VKB was exactly what we were looking for. Calvin, our designer, came to our house, listened to my ideas, and thoroughly examined the space. A few days later, we met with him and Sean in the showroom to see what they envisioned (a lot like these HGTV shows where you get the hypothetical 3D layout). I felt like they had read my mind. We loved the proposal, so we went ahead and picked cabinets, tile, hardware, etc. that day! The project started within a week or two. Jason, the project manager, came by frequently and made sure all of my questions and concerns were addressed. On days when I didn't see him, he called to keep me updated and to make sure I was satisfied with the progress. The workers were very respectful of our home, protecting our furniture and floors and keeping the house as clean as possible. We had a few minor issues along the way (very minor compared to most renos) but Jason was quick to address them and make sure things went smoothly. The quality of their work is excellent. Overall, we are very satisfied and would recommend VKB to anyone looking for a design-to-build company."

"Alex and his team are fantastic. They renovated our DC rowhouse kitchen, and we couldnâ t be more pleased. Alex was able to figure out creative solutions to our small space (moving pipes, adding a fake beam, making use of empty space, etc.). And his employees are very talented. The carpentry, electrical work, plumbing, cabinet installation, and overall attention to detail was top notch. They showed up nearly every day by 8am and worked until 5pm. "Most pleased. Would definitely hire again. Needed carpenter to build a footbridge using repurposed wood, install insect screen under raised screen-in porch, install oak handrails, fix the threshold to our front door, and add shoe molding in basement. JW (owner) was pleasant, professional, and thorough when he came out to give an estimate. He listened to what we wanted done and suggested ways to make it work. Scheduling was a breeze. A team of two came out to complete our projects. Of course temperatures were in the 90s, but they worked nonstop. Pedro (crew chief) built our footbridge based only on description. The results were amazing. It's sturdy, attractive, and durable. Kudos for great work. Other projects were completed within the timeframe with Kevin working on the screen and railings with assistance from Pedro. The crew was timely, professional, courteous. They cleaned up at the end of each day. All work was completed within 4 days. There was only a minor issue with the oak hand rails (needed additional sanding) -- which was remedied quickly after review of the project manager, Bob. JW was a tad more expensive that other bids, but in the end, well worth the price. Glad we went with them."

"Excellent. I knew what I wanted and what I wanted to accomplish. The company president ended up making the trip to my house for the complimentary plan and estimate. I was highly improved with his attention to my needs, recommendations to get the most out of the space and keep costs down for me. We were able to build hanging side out to full depth available and, without looking strange, drop the next 2 sections back to avoid interfering with the window valance. By keeping the surface color close to the wall paint most people are greatly impressed by the storage and the fact that it doesn't detract from the overall space. Did have to be dismantled to re-carpet the room but was surprised that the carpet crew was able to pay careful attention to the pieces and reassemble with very little difficulty (though at lest 3 people required). Many commented as I intended....great selling point for this bedroom."

"Faustino power washed the brick front and aluminum siding of my home and his work was simply outstanding. I was only expecting him to do the front and both sides, but he ended up doing the back of my home as well, without my asking. It took all day and it wasn't easy doing it single-handedly, but we couldn't be happier. HIGHLY recommend!"

"Mike G. showed up at exactly 8 A.M., handed me his business card, tools in hand and ready to work. He surveyed the job, asked a few questions and asked to sign a work order (20 min or so). Totally professional, so impressed! Mike did say it was a lot of work to try to hang 10 doors on his own and fix a piece of siding in one day, but that he was up for the job. About 4 doors in, Victor called Mike to ask how the job was going. Mike mentioned it was a lot of work, but he would get it done. Around 1 P.M. or so, a second handyman arrived (Chris, I think) - again very professional and ready to work. Mike pointed him in the right direction and Chris went to work. They both finished up about 2:30 or 3:00 and cleaned up very well.

HERE IS WHERE THE BAD PART STARTS!!!!
Victor calls and states that I owed him more money because:
1) He had to send a second guy out, and 
2) The doors took longer than "he", as in Victor, thought they would take. 
Victor tried to hit me at every angle he could to jack up the total price:
1) "I need to charge you rate prices for 11 hours" ($158 for the first and $96 for the other 10 hours - $1118 an increase of $300)
2) "It was supposed to be $20 per shave and some of the doors needed to be shaved on two or more sides. I need to charge you for shaving each side" ( so up to $40 to $80 extra per door - $Several hundred dollar increase$)
3) The door that did not need to be shaved, "the frame had to be adjusted" (talking to the handyman, he said no it did not, he just put in longer screws -  $20 increase)
4) " If I only charge you what we agreed, I dont make any money"
5) "I would pay you to find someone that would do this quality of work for the price we agreed to"

..THE LIST WENT ON AND ON AND ON.....
Fortunately, I have a neighbor that has used Mr. Handyman (Victor) before and he warned me this would happen - Victor is known for doing this.

After a long discussion about how little money he was making I eventually paid a total of $728.00
1) 9 doors @ $70 ( $630),
2) 1 door @ $50 ($50),
3) 1 siding @ $48 ($48)
Victor stated that "he could not offer me the coupon, but would take care of me next time." I told him I would pay the $728 but disagreed about the coupon.  He then proceeded to hang up on me.
Even with the warning - I never thought this would have been such a fight to pay what Victor and I agreed to charge / pay.
I did not even mention that a glass dome ceiling light got broken today in the process.... ...and now I will pay to replace and fix that too.
Oh well, live and learn -  I would use Mike again in a heartbeat.  Doing business with Victor again... ...Not high on my list.
