"I was plagued with recurring ice dams in a few areas of my roof. After investigation, it was discovered that the insulation in a few visible areas was sub-par. Roland came in and quickly spotted the problem areas. He assured me that the could fix these problems immediately. He used a combination of rearranging existing batts, blown-in fiberglass and spray foam to seal the attic space, over the course of two visits. He's extremely personable and always called me back or answered the phone right away."

"They are bar far the most responsive, ontime and dependable providers I have worked with. Above all they take pride in what they do so you don't end up with lousy results. Alessandro came and looked at the project and came back with his estimate in a few days. Since the weather was not helping at the beginning they started with my basement job (a special thanks to Marcus). The basement finishing went very well with timely addressing of various problems we want to cover. I am particularly happy with the type of insulation they used. Very neat and clean. My basement was very humid and during the rainy season the walls inside could get wet. I am sure this over the long run saves a lot of money for me. Re porch and balcony, they have done and impeccable carpentry job. What I loved was that whenever the Boston's weather permitted they were on the property working. So no wasting time. While they did this we uncovered a big problem in footing of my sunroom. They immediately switched to that and with minimal time wasted I had new footings under my sunroom. The same type of job is done in my balcony. The decking and railing are replaced. Painted as new. Again in a very efficient way. I think it's worth mentioning that this was a per hour job but never have I felt that Alessandro's team are working slower than they should. This is a big plus. On top of that, they were flexible with the pricing and offered free labor for basement flooring and sunroom door adjustments (to be done this week). When I wanted to discuss the financials of this job Alessandro and Giovanni came to my house for an in person discussion. All in all, I would use their service next time. They might not look the cheapest at the beginning but considering what other providers do (with low estimates and keep adding to it), their price was very reasonable."

"The technician who came was a pleasant, competent professional who examined the unfinished attic to evaluateit w/r/t insulation only or insulation as part of a full finishing of the space. He took measurements and scratched out some information on his pad.. I told him that I intended to review my options before any decision. I offered payment at that time and he told me there was no charge for this service. It struck me as odd that he told me that what I had agreed to pay $19.00 for was actually free but I asumed billing would accompany an actual report/proposal. A month on I've never seen anything like a report although I have been charged via credit card for the inspection service. Perhaps the report-recommendation is still on its way? PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS REVIEW FORM REQUIRES A YES/NO HIRE AGAIN RESPONSE. I WOULD HAVE PREFERRED TO ANSWER UNDECIDED."

"Roberto was the technician and he was very professional, polite, and personable. He inspected the rest of our system and told us things that needed to be changed or repaired. He showed me pictures of everything. Everything he told me about was accurate. He quoted me a price for R38 insulation , Some of our ducts were plastic and he recommended them to be changed. I agreed completely and didn't know they were plastic. I would have had them done the work but I had no price comparisons to make and besides I didn't have the money right then. So he just finished the vent cleaning and left his card. He did a great job on the vent cleaning and was happy with the work."

"

End result was fantastic. The construction took 2-3 weeks longer than estimated- some delays due to Hurricane Sandy (materials), some due to personnel not showing up when scheduled.

Also, communication with designer could have been better- several times we had to pull information rather than receiving it proactively.
However, any concerns we experienced were quickly and professionally addressed and rectified. All personnel we encountered were excellent, friendly and professional.
Since this was a new experience for us, comparisons are difficult. Overall, very pleased with the final product and would certainly recommend Kirby.

Mighty Duct was founded in April 1994 by heating professionals who saw a need for air duct cleaning. We sought out the most powerful vacuum equipment available in order to perform an efficient and thorough job. Because we have the proper equipment air duct cleaning is, for the client, a clean and routine process.\n\nAll of Mighty Duct's technicians are trained from the NADCA standards and adhere to a proven process that has brought value to thousands of customers. It is the goal of every Mighty Duct technician to provide friendly, neat and effective air duct cleaning services that will leave our customers "breathing easier!" We are fully insured and privately owned. Duct cleaning is our primary business. There are many other companies out there who have duct cleaning as an added service, but we think that is short sighted, and believe we should focus on investigating more in state of the art equipment, and dedicate our time to continuing to learn more about our field. We'd rather be the best at one thing, than "acceptable" in several. As a successful private business, we have resources to invest in the future. We will bring you exceptional duct cleaning services at a reasonable cost, so all can enjoy the benefits of great air quality.

"CSA subed the electrical, HVAC, plastering plumbing and painting and did the repair work on the kitchen floor, lock replacement, vent installation, refinishing and some wall and ceiling prep for the painters.  The experience and knowledge possessed by the former owner Brad Sterns completely reshaped the project much for the better and we would hire them again just for his expertise.  We are very pleased with the result, except for the quality of the painting work.  The overall quality of their work was very good; but they had trouble properly staffing and overseeing the subs so that some of the sub work was below par and the contract work, which should have be finished by the end of June wasn't completeuntil the first week in September and cost us a lot of grief as well as extra money staying in hotels while the painting was finished.  The subcontractors were on the whole excellent except for the painters who were terrible, did not properly prep the walls properly and got paint on the woodwork and furniture.  The painters wanted extra for washing two walls; but painted over cobwebs and dust on the others.  Nothing was sanded on the walls.  The HVAC sub did an excellent job installing the new gas heating and air conditioning; but inadvertently left a drain pipe too short and got some condensate water into the newly insulated walls.  When told about the problem, rad Sterns fixed it right away - hopefully no damage was done in the 3 weeks the problem went unnoticed.

"He was fabulous really innovative, because he did great work. Not only was he the most appropriate when I ask him about the  jobs I had but very prompt getting back to me and very much on he was on time he was on point he came up with innovative solutions beyond what even I thought I needed so he solved the bigger problem as suppose to little projects that I thought I had he was able to see through in a way that really solve my problems very effectively. He was clobbered after figured out that instead of getting what I needed done was there was air conditioner in my wall right so there is a hole in my wall because there is air conditioner pretty old air conditioner that was the project help me take it out and replace it all the others were like well good luck going finding something to fit it exactly to fit it you need to find it exactly and then we will come out and we will install it for know you they all started from five hundred and up right and that was that one thing and he said no look you already got a portable air conditioner in your office how about we take out the air conditioner that will leave a hole we'll fill the hole in put insulation in it and a tubing it and a dryer vent kind of thing on the other side and now you got your heater air conditioner in you main room which you need it and you just get a smaller more appropriate for you office size because the thing I had was too big for the office anyway because it was a portable air conditioner suppose to be for a larger room and he said get a small one that fits this room and I put the holes in to install that and he made this wonderful oh the hole that was left right instead of just having this weird discolored  hole rectangle hole and he also haul away the older air conditioner which huge I mean the thing was giant I didn't even realized how big it was because so much of it went up and he and his team hauled that away the whole thing and all apart of the price and they went through and they painted the rectangle he put crowned molding around it so it looks like a it's a picture  almost. I had also had them all looked at my deck outside of my house he was the only one who actually went down under the deck to look to see what I was talking about about it being imbalanced and told me how dangerous my deck was when I had Sears put in my door going out to my deck they saw through the connections between the house and the deck  nobody else was had gone down there like he and he took a movie with his phone to show me what the situation was and the reason why my deck was so wobbly it's only been held up by one split leg and one rotten leg and I have going out there and these other guys at looked at the deck and said listen we'll take the whole thing down and we'll get it inspected and get these haltered things and not one of them of the other two guys who angielist sent me none of them explained to me that was the problem they just said know you have to have the whole thing taken down it's just old  you have to have the whole thing taken down and we'll put back one or we'll pt back half and he was so thorough."

"Last winter we had significant damage to our house due to ice dams and had to live in a hotel for over a month. Neponset Valley Construction was subcontracted to do the roof and gutter repairs on the house.  We were very impressed with the accessibility, as well as the time that Brian took to explain the work to be completed, as well as his professionalism and that of his team. Due to this fact, we chose to have a lot more work completed by NVC. Last March, (after the ice storms)- they responded quickly and re-roofed our house as part of our insurance claim, and they also re-roofed our garage, re-screened & painted our porch, as well as blew in insulation into the walls at the same time. We were thrilled that they were able to do that work in addition to the claim in such a timely manner.
We finished up the insurance claim this February after some back and forth with the insurance company. NVC was very supportive and helpful as they worked with our insurance company to help us get what we deserved (and should have gotten from the beginning) from the claim. In fact, we wanted to put our house up for sale this March, but still had work left to do (i.e. the other side of our roof, painting of the trim & exterior, new gutters and some odds & ends to repair). We were not sure if it could happen before we put it up for sale, but Brian and his team made it all come together in a week's time!  Plus- due to the seasonal warmth, they were able to paint our house in three days! We were amazed and thrilled at the quality and timeliness of the work done. Each and every one of his employees was extremely professional, tidy, and a pleasure to work with. Above that, they all listened and attended to any and all items we needed... definitely going above the call of duty to help us get our house ready to be sold. We recommend them highly and would definitely use them again!"

Insulation questions, answered by experts

Rockwool insulation can last up to 100 years, but just how long this insulation lasts in your home depends on how well it's maintained. Poorly installed insulation may last only 30 years, so be sure to regularly inspect your home's insulation for water damage, settling, and pests to give your insulation the best chance of having a long lifespan.

How to dispose of insulation depends on a few factors, including the condition of the material. While you can simply bag up and throw away many kinds of insulation, some municipalities offer recycling, so it's worth checking with yours. If there are contaminants such as asbestos in your insulation, abatement and specialized disposal are often necessary.

Asphalt roofs provide better insulation than metal roofs, but that doesn’t always mean that asphalt roofs are better for reducing heating and cooling bills. In hotter climates, metal roofs will usually be better for home efficiency because the material reflects more sunlight and reduces solar heat gain. In colder climates, asphalt roofs are sometimes superior in terms of efficiency because they introduce more solar heat gain to your home and have greater insulating capabilities. However, metal roofs installed with an air gap can provide similar levels of insulation.

The primary purpose of insulation is to maintain comfortable temperatures in a home, whether that’s cool air when it’s hot out, or warm air in winter, but that’s not all it can do. All options will also minimize heating and cooling needs, lowering both your carbon footprint and energy bills in turn. And some options, like rigid foam boards, even offer soundproofing benefits, too.

Spray foam insulation can last between 80 and 100 years, depending on the type. Closed-cell spray foam is more durable, while open-cell foam is more susceptible to moisture damage and deterioration. It's important to consult a professional installer to understand which type of foam will be used and its specific longevity. Additionally, be aware that some spray foams can damage plastic piping, so if you have PVC or CPVC pipes, discuss this with your installer.
