"I was plagued with recurring ice dams in a few areas of my roof. After investigation, it was discovered that the insulation in a few visible areas was sub-par. Roland came in and quickly spotted the problem areas. He assured me that the could fix these problems immediately. He used a combination of rearranging existing batts, blown-in fiberglass and spray foam to seal the attic space, over the course of two visits. He's extremely personable and always called me back or answered the phone right away."

"United did a great job with finishing our basement.  We worked mostly with Junior (the project manager).  He met with us to go over what we were looking for and gave us a quote for 25,000 which was a great price and about the price range we was looking for.  We ended up adding more things we wanted later that were not included in the quote which pushed the price up, but we were always comfortable with the price and there were no hidden costs or anything like that.   We ended up adding a floor instead of painted concrete, we upgraded the electrical work (more lights added, LED lights. baseboard heat), added insulation, re-did the steps going down to the basement and a few other things.
We ended up spending around 50,000 with all the extras and cost for materials etc. Junior was great with working with us and getting us quotes for any extra things we wanted to add. He was also very responsive.  Any questions or concerns we had he would answer promptly.  It took about 4 months for the entire project to be done, which was longer than we wanted or expected but to be fair we never gave them a hard date to when it needed to be done by.  They started off super fast and got alot done in a short amount of time, but mid way through they started to slow down.  I told Junior about it and they ended the project very fast too.  So as long as your upfront about how quickly you need it done, they will get it done for you.  The actually work was great and the basement looks spectacular.  Any little issues they fixed at the end.  For example, the faucet we installed wasn't flowing properly, I told Junior and he had the plumber come back to fix it (on Columbus day no less!).
We will def use United again in the future if we have any other construction projects."

This is probably not your roof:
But, if your roof has damaged flashing, missing shingles, curling, blistering, buckling, rotting and algae growth (which appears as dark or greenish stains), you probably need a new roof.
If you’re roofer doesn’t talk about these, you’re talking to the wrong guy:

"Vista was on time to all appointments.  The job grew from a new roof, to insulating the roof over the cathedral ceiling and bringing a saggy sun room roof line up to code.  My husband did a great deal of research regarding products and applications.  He asked for their recommendations before stating what he thought should be done.  My husband was pleased with the feedback from Vista on the proper way to correct the roof line as well as the insulation alternatives for a cathedral ceiling.  Colors were selected and a date was given for installation.
Installation went rather well.  Vista installed the wrong color drip edge.  My husband pointed out the error.  Vista stripped the material and reinstalled.  Luckily the shingles were not installed yet.  In our quote we asked for ice and water barrier over 100% of the roof.  He noticed it was only 2 courses up on the roof.  This was pointed out and the foreman quickly corrected the problem.
The crew was very nice and courteous.  As with any construction work, we feel that we need to keep an eye on the progress, so I don't think the errors of the drip edge and ice/water barrier were a big deal.  But if my husband was not home, it would have been missed.  This was all miscommunication between their salesman, distribution house and construction manager.  Overall they did a great job."

"Roberto was the technician and he was very professional, polite, and personable. He inspected the rest of our system and told us things that needed to be changed or repaired. He showed me pictures of everything. Everything he told me about was accurate. He quoted me a price for R38 insulation , Some of our ducts were plastic and he recommended them to be changed. I agreed completely and didn't know they were plastic. I would have had them done the work but I had no price comparisons to make and besides I didn't have the money right then. So he just finished the vent cleaning and left his card. He did a great job on the vent cleaning and was happy with the work."

"CSA subed the electrical, HVAC, plastering plumbing and painting and did the repair work on the kitchen floor, lock replacement, vent installation, refinishing and some wall and ceiling prep for the painters.  The experience and knowledge possessed by the former owner Brad Sterns completely reshaped the project much for the better and we would hire them again just for his expertise.  We are very pleased with the result, except for the quality of the painting work.  The overall quality of their work was very good; but they had trouble properly staffing and overseeing the subs so that some of the sub work was below par and the contract work, which should have be finished by the end of June wasn't completeuntil the first week in September and cost us a lot of grief as well as extra money staying in hotels while the painting was finished.  The subcontractors were on the whole excellent except for the painters who were terrible, did not properly prep the walls properly and got paint on the woodwork and furniture.  The painters wanted extra for washing two walls; but painted over cobwebs and dust on the others.  Nothing was sanded on the walls.  The HVAC sub did an excellent job installing the new gas heating and air conditioning; but inadvertently left a drain pipe too short and got some condensate water into the newly insulated walls.  When told about the problem, rad Sterns fixed it right away - hopefully no damage was done in the 3 weeks the problem went unnoticed.

"Last winter we had significant damage to our house due to ice dams and had to live in a hotel for over a month. Neponset Valley Construction was subcontracted to do the roof and gutter repairs on the house.  We were very impressed with the accessibility, as well as the time that Brian took to explain the work to be completed, as well as his professionalism and that of his team. Due to this fact, we chose to have a lot more work completed by NVC. Last March, (after the ice storms)- they responded quickly and re-roofed our house as part of our insurance claim, and they also re-roofed our garage, re-screened & painted our porch, as well as blew in insulation into the walls at the same time. We were thrilled that they were able to do that work in addition to the claim in such a timely manner.
We finished up the insurance claim this February after some back and forth with the insurance company. NVC was very supportive and helpful as they worked with our insurance company to help us get what we deserved (and should have gotten from the beginning) from the claim. In fact, we wanted to put our house up for sale this March, but still had work left to do (i.e. the other side of our roof, painting of the trim & exterior, new gutters and some odds & ends to repair). We were not sure if it could happen before we put it up for sale, but Brian and his team made it all come together in a week's time!  Plus- due to the seasonal warmth, they were able to paint our house in three days! We were amazed and thrilled at the quality and timeliness of the work done. Each and every one of his employees was extremely professional, tidy, and a pleasure to work with. Above that, they all listened and attended to any and all items we needed... definitely going above the call of duty to help us get our house ready to be sold. We recommend them highly and would definitely use them again!"

Insulation questions, answered by experts

If you’re using faced insulation with paper, face the paper toward the inside of the room during the installation process.

A good way to remember this is that the paper should face the “warm side” as it’s the vapor barrier, meaning it should face toward where the heat will be coming from.

Selling a house with spray foam insulation can be challenging due to concerns about improper installation or its compatibility with the home's structure. If not applied correctly, spray foam can cause issues such as moisture buildup, cracking, or damage to wiring and plumbing. If the insulation didn't cure correctly, there are also flammability concerns. Removing or repairing this type of insulation can pose risks as well.

In some cases, yes, insulating an unheated garage can lead to mold and mildew. The issue with insulating a garage is that the interior will warm up and cool down more slowly than the exterior air, which can cause condensation inside the space. Where there is moisture, there is likely to be mold and mildew over time. Installing a vapor barrier can help avoid moisture and mildew problems in an insulated garage.

Because of the moisture concern, open-cell foam requires a vapor barrier. The barrier protects against high humidity and moisture exposure in rooms such as basements, bathrooms, or exterior walls. It wouldn't be necessary in dry interior spaces.

How to dispose of insulation depends on a few factors, including the condition of the material. While you can simply bag up and throw away many kinds of insulation, some municipalities offer recycling, so it's worth checking with yours. If there are contaminants such as asbestos in your insulation, abatement and specialized disposal are often necessary.
