"A little sloppy in their cleanup. Found insulation and aluminum scraps around work areas afterwards. English was not the installers first language, so there was some communication issues. So far, no problems with any of the windows. We'll see come this winter."

Customers say: Quick response

"I was truly amazed by Jim Gates, he followed thru with a phone call & price after discussing with a friend who together did an ausome job. He arrived Sun around 10 am and the job was done in 3hrs. I had previously waited for 9 months from someone who eventually said he was too busy. Thank you for great response time, expertise. These gentlemen cleaned everything up as well.I'll keep him as a handyman. Thanks again"

"The window was installed in place of an unwanted sliding glass door, which meant building a lower wall and residing the exterior. The window and its housing look great (and I am hard to impress!) The salesperson and the installers were professional, helpful and friendly."

Windows questions, answered by experts

To keep cold out, look for treatments that sit close to the window frame and are made from thick, insulating materials. Thermal curtains, cellular shades, window quilts, and insulated shutters can all help retain heat. Layering window treatments, like pairing lined curtains with cellular shades, can provide even better insulation by further reducing drafts and heat transfer.

You should avoid using abrasive materials and harsh chemicals when cleaning windows. Abrasive tools like scrubbing pads, rough cloths, or steel wool can permanently scratch and damage the glass. Harsh chemical cleaners containing alcohol or ammonia can damage window treatments, frame materials, and special features like tinting. It is also best to use distilled or filtered water instead of hard water, which can leave spots or streaks. For best results, use a clean microfiber cloth to wash the glass and old black and white newspapers to dry it without leaving streaks.

Hopper windows aren’t flawless when it comes to keeping rain and debris out of your house because if there’s wind pushing the precipitation, it could easily get in through the open space. On top of that, hopper windows aren’t potential escape routes the way regular windows are in case of a fire or emergency. If that’s a priority or need, it’s something to consider when choosing a window type.

When comparing impact windows vs. hurricane shutters, it’s important to consider the protection and installation details to determine the right choice for you. For constant protection against storms and flying debris, impact windows are a better option than hurricane shutters, especially if you don’t want to install shutters that will change the look of your house. However, impact windows are more costly than hurricane shutters. If you want a budget-friendly option that’s still protective against storms, hurricane shutters are a solid option.

Garden windows last about 15 to 30 years, depending on the materials, ongoing maintenance, and local climate. Fiberglass and wood windows tend to have the longest life spans as long as you keep up with cleaning, lubricating, and refinishing them. Make sure to inspect your windows about once a year for signs of trouble, like worn-out seals, frame damage, or cracks in the panes.
