"Thank you for taking the time out to give us a good review [Member Name Removed]. We appreciate it very much. Let us know if you need anything else."
"Mr [Member Name Removed], Both Carrier (Bruce Davis) and all of us at Star Heating & Cooling have tried our best to resolve this situation with you. Your system is in good working order and we are not quite sure what problems you have with us. Both Carrier and Star have offered several solutions, none of which were acceptable to you."
"Thank you for taking the time to give us a review! We appreciate your business. Please let us know if there is anything else we can help you with Mrs [Member Name Removed]."
Our 12-year-old heat pump needed around 2000 in repairs so we began getting quotes from dealers about a new unit. I had 4 different quotes ranging from Trane, Lennox and Carrier products. Star heating and cooling was the 2nd cheapest when it came to overall cost, but my salesman Marshall was the only salesman to explain how the rebates, financing and the units worked. What I mean by that is he took the time to explain why different companies offered rebates and no financing or vice versa. In the end he was upfront in telling me there really is no free money when it comes to 0% APR in the HVAC world (he compared it to buying a car, take the rebate or taking the financing you usually don’t get both). That took me by surprise but I liked it. Star was also the only company to inquire about switching from electric to gas. After lots of research I was still skeptical but Marshall and the owner guaranteed my bills would be lower, so much so that they put it in writing that if my heating and cooling bills did not drop by switching to gas they would replace the gas unit with a heat pump free of charge. That impressed me. The heat pump I currently had was a Trane XL14i so it wasn’t a builder grade but a very good and efficient unit. We decided to get a little higher end model due to just having moved in to our new home less than a year ago and having plans to live here for a long while, so we purchased a Carrier Infinity 59TN6 Gas Furnace and a Carrier Infinity 24ANB6 AC unit along with the Infinity Thermostat we also added HUMXXLFP Humidifier. The price listed above does not include the $1925 in rebates offered. So that made the price a bit more competitive. Finally, one of the other quotes I had offered a 15 year parts and labor warranty, when I told Marshall about that Star Heating offered 10 years parts and Labor so long as I signed up for their yearly plan (no big deal because I planned on doing a plan due to the high cost of replacing a unit) but something to think about.
Installation took the majority of the day but it went smooth, the guys worked hard and did a great job making things look nice and cleaning up. They installed a new gas line into my house with a T to allow us to convert something else to gas if we want. The owner was onsite and Marshall did check in as well. It is spring time so I have not really tested out the product but I’m going to assume it works, we installed the unit before the gas line was ran due to Star's scheduling so we will be able to test it out in a week when our gas line is run to the house.
I would recommend Star Heating in Cooling to anyone who needs a new system. I would also recommend educating yourself on what you are buying. This is something I did a ton of and while it probably drove Marshall nuts that I was emailing him constantly about different things, he answered every question I had and went out of his way to make sure I was happy. He even brought over a space heater, incase it got a little chilly in the house, to cover the gap between the install of my new unit and the gas company running the gas line to my house.
"It was a pleasure to work with you, and look forward to serving you in the future."
Not well. Upon attempting to install the WiFi, remote control thermostat, he shorted out the controller board. When I asked if there was a problem, Mike said yes, but he would figure it out.
He installed a used thermostat he had in his truck and left my house with the furnace disassembled, the front covers off and wired around the zoning board. ( dated pictures available). My upstairs thermostat was no longer working.
Before he started the attempted installation, we discussed the future need to replace my furnace and air conditioner, at which time we were looking at the furnace and zoning board. Mike gave me an approximate cost and advised we would not need to replace the zoning board (approximately $1200.00) as it was working. (The lights were on and my upstairs thermostat was receiving information from the board).
It is now the beginning of August and Star refuses to repair the damage. When I could not get a response from Star, I contacted Carrier and they confirmed the WiFi, remote control thermostats were not compatible with furnaces over 4 years old.
I believe a reputable company should have known about furnace component compatibility and would repair damages they cause.
Stars response below is an outright lie. Mike never offered to fix the issue he denied there was an issue.
Company Response:
1)The dated pictures prior to Mike Wallace's arrival showed the zoning board operational. 2) Mike provided an estimate of replacing the furnace in the future and in that estimate advised the zoning board was still good and would not need to be replaced. 3) If the repair was completed properly, why would anyone go through this process? 4) Reference the Indiana Secretary of State website. You will be surprised to see no HVAC license. 5) Move forward with caution before contacting this vendor!
"The problem was a result of a shorted control board. We found this out once we tried to install a new thermostat. She had issues with her zoning system in the fall and winter of 2014 as well. The customer was never charged for the service or our time. We were in the process of working up a quote to replace the zone control board (we would not charge $1200 for this repair) The customer immediately informed us she was NOT going to pay for the repair. We are not in the business of screwing people over. When we make mistakes, we fix them and take care of our customers the best way we can. Unfortunately, we were not able to come up with a reasonable solution for this matter. This customer believed we made the control board fail, and that was simply not the case. We are fully licensed and insured, please see our profile for reference"

Ten days in and I was getting desperate. Called Star Heating & Cooling and spoke with Sarah. Star has a nice "Free Second Opinion" option -- Woohoo! She sent her dad (Mike, the owner) out as soon as she could and he came & told me I just need a new compressor ($1950). But they needed to order the part from Carrier. Turns out the original installers of the heat pump failed to register the installation with Carrier (I could have saved an additional couple hundred bucks!) but the original part has a "recall note" on it and a forthcoming rebate, so cest la vie.
Part came in Thursday evening -- installed first thing Friday morning. By noon, the house was cooling. By 3:00 or so, life was back to normal.
Thanks to Sarah, Mike, & Donovan! Y'all Rock!

Beat Williams on price for comparable units by $4,000 and found a rebate from Carrier for the heat exchange failure for another $800.
They even did the paperwork for me to get the rebates.
