"It went very well. I received an estimate and had the water softener installed a week later. I had three estimates. One I felt like I was talking to a car salesman, the other automatically added a $99 "membership" giving me services I don't need, plus the cost was over $600 higher. The Elgin estimate was reasonable and thorough. Scott did a great job explaining everything that needed to be done. The installation went well and, again, Scott explained everything that he was doing and how the water softener works. I would definitely recommend Elgin Water Care!"

"Ethan is really a good person who cares only about solving your issue at the best price. He replaced my water softener system and late the same night he replaced my water heater as well. His price is half of the big shops and i’m 100% satisfied and will only use him for my water processing needs."

"We had a great experience with Zenith Pure Solutions. They showed up on time, tested our water, and explained everything in a way that was easy to understand. There was no pressure at all, just honest recommendations based on what our home needed. The installation went smoothly, the area was left clean, and the water quality improved right away. Overall, very professional and easy to work with. I would definitely recommend them."

"I initially called for a service call because it didn't feel like our water was being softened and the softener wasn't using salt. He looked it over, reminded me that it was 17 years old, tested the water, and said it was time for a new one. I've worked with Plumbing Heating paramedics for our furnace and air conditioning. They are great to work with, and I've found their techs to be very professional."

"It was still operating fine but it turned out that they discovered that I have iron filter water softener. There was a test that bypassed iron filter and I have perfect water pressure again. It was a waste of call. I had a bad iron filter that was so clogged up with gunk that it wasn't passing water at that point. They had to charge me $50 service call. Maybe I would have figured it myself. It was embarrassing that I didn’t find the problem myself. I have no problem with them at all. I would call them in a heartbeat for anything. They did it professionally and quickly. If I ever need them again, I would be the first one to call them. I got them through Angie’s List. I check Angie’s List any time before I need to have any work done. With the lightning strike, I was pretty desperate. Angie’s List is a big help."

"They recommended replacing a section of line that would have only repaired a single faucet and cost nearly $1000, and did not include the softener replacement which was another $1000 or so. Got a second opinion and was able to get a new softener and a much less invasive (and less expensive) repair from another company for less than $1200."

Water Softeners questions, answered by experts

The primary difference between a water softener and a water filter lies in what they remove from the water. A water softener is designed to remove hard minerals like calcium and magnesium. In contrast, a water filter has a broader effect, removing various contaminants above a certain size, which can include bacteria and other impurities.

To decide which you need, consider your goal. If you want to eliminate hard minerals, choose a softener. If you want to remove a wide range of contaminants, a filter is the better option. Filters are also generally less expensive to install. Depending on your water supply, you may need to install both for comprehensive treatment.

If your ‘do isn’t doing what you want it to do despite using good hair care products, hard water might be to blame. Since hard water can’t rinse soap off as well as soft water can, your hair might grow limp because of the shampoo and conditioner residue that’s left behind. If you color your hair, you might see it fade more quickly or even turn a different shade as the dye reacts with the minerals in the water. You might also experience an itchy scalp, thanks to the dryness that comes from bathing in the hard water.

The most effective way to fix hard water in your shower is by installing a whole-home water softening system. This system treats water as it enters your home, removing the minerals that cause hardness before they can reach your shower or any other fixtures. While this is the most comprehensive solution, other methods are often temporary fixes. For a more affordable and shower-specific option, you can install a water-softening showerhead or a shower filter. However, these filters are generally less effective and may not remove all the contaminants that lead to limescale and hard water stains. By implementing a water softening solution, you can expect a reduction in mineral deposits and enjoy the benefits of cleaner-feeling hair and skin.

Some shower water softeners are effective, but this isn’t always the case. Most shower filters only filter out chlorine, not hard minerals like calcium. Other shower filters can't handle the demand in homes with very hard water. It's also important to change the filters on your shower filters. Failure to regularly swap out old filters will make the filter ineffective over time.

The most accurate way to determine whether you have hard water is to purchase a water test kit from a hardware store or send a tap water sample to a lab. But there are some signs you can look out for without professional testing. For instance, if you're consistently dealing with mineral stains on your glassware, windows, and shower doors, you're likely to have hard water. Hard water can also make it harder to lather and rinse soap, so if you're struggling to work up a good lather in the shower, hard water might be the culprit.
