"We had an electrical problem after a big storm and power outage. Evan, the Ashpaugh electrician, came on short notice and already had the solution to fix the problem. Evan was one of our electricians on a previous repair. He followed the coronavirus quarantine protocol and was in and out in a good time. We appreciate how responsive and professional Ashpaugh Electric has been when we needed them."

"Aaron's Electric did a great job on this project! They were competitively priced, arrived on time, were thorough and careful in their work, and cleaned up each day on site. Jim also added input and suggestions during the quote process and on the job, making the final results that much better. I would highly recommend Aaron's Electric for any electrical projects!"

"The wind caused a branch to fall off a tree and it pulled the electric meter off the outside of the house leaving the power lines on the ground. I called Bucks Electric and when I told him about the power lines on the ground he rearranged his schedule to come out the next morning./ The job turned out to be more involved than originally thought because the previous owners didn't have the electric service installed correctly. He spent about 11 hours there getting everything put back that way it should be. I will call him the next time I need electric work done"

"Highly recommend Keetons Electrical. Communication was excellent — he worked directly with the home inspector to clarify exactly what was needed, which made the process smooth and stress-free. He was thorough, knowledgeable, and clearly takes pride in doing quality work. Everything was completed correctly and to code, and his availability was quick. On top of that, he was friendly and professional throughout. I would absolutely use him again and recommend him to anyone needing electrical work."

Electrical questions, answered by experts

There are many signs it is time to replace an electrical panel, starting with flickering lights. Other tell-tale signals include overheating appliances, light fixtures that cause an electric shock, hissing or crackling from the breaker box, burned or blackened spots near the breaker box, and breakers that trip whenever activating power-hungry appliances like microwaves.

Installing a circuit breaker is best handled by a local professional electrician. This project requires following strict electrical codes, and might even involve permits. Not only can electrical work be dangerous, but without the proper training that a pro will have, you could cause further damage to your home’s electrical system.

If you need to run a wire from the meter to the breaker box, start by turning off the power using the main switch to avoid injury risks from live wires. Then, locate the ground wire from your meter and connect it to the ground bar of the breaker box. Connect the neutral wire using the same method to improve your circuit efficiency.

Next, locate the hot wires running from the main switch to the meter. To connect them to the correct terminals from meter to breaker, unscrew the nuts of the breaker hotwire terminals, insert the positive hotwire, and ensure it’s firmly attached. Finally, secure the wires with electrical tape and wire tie cables before re-securing your breaker box. Keep in mind that this process can be dangerous, so don’t hesitate to hire a local electrician.

The American Wire Gauge system calculates wire size diameters using the complicated formula D(AWG)=.005·92((36-AWG)/39) inch. A simpler rule of thumb is that every six-gauge decrease doubles the wire diameter, and every three-gauge decrease doubles the wire’s cross-sectional area. On the other hand, wavenumbers are typically measured in reciprocal meters (1/m or m−1) or reciprocal centimeters (1/cm or cm−1).

No, because amps and volts measure very different things. However, you can use basic equations to find amps or volts by using data about one of the measurements to calculate the other.
