"Phil came out to provide a free estimate for a new boiler. Appointment was scheduled for the same week and Phil called to move up the appointment due to a cancellation. He was very thorough, asked questions and answered all of mine. Would definitely recommend.

"The service tech. was thorough and efficient. We appreciated that he verbally explained what was done and also left us with an even more complete printout of the condition and operation of our furnace and humidifier. The Angie's list clean and check certificate of $49.00 was part of the total cost. This is the first time we used G & R Heating and Air. We plan to call them again when needed."

"One of the larger HVAC companies in Chicago told me I needed a new boiler to the tune of $8000, but something smelled fishy to me. On a referral from a friend, I called TDH, and their technician came out and checked out my boiler and told me there was nothing wrong with it. He also told me that the other company pays their technicians COMMISSION on anything they sell, producing a huge conflict of interest. TDH did some minor maintenance on my boiler for a low/reasonable rate and saved me close to $8000. Thanks TDH!"

Why the importance of family owned? Why does it matter? It matters because it means we are long term, and we care at a level that is hard for large corporations to understand. We are an HVAC contractor who will be here tomorrow, and the next day. Not a fly-by-night dealer gone when you need us most. \nFamily-owned also ensures you will experience a level of customer service that is unique to family-owned companies. We understand the importance of reliable and efficient air conditioning, heating and indoor air quality products for our own homes and office, and we know that the same is important to you. For this reason we provide our customers with the latest in heating and air conditioning technology - products that we would trust in our own home.

"Not all that well. First, the cost was much higher than other quotes I received. Since I don't live in the place, I had a limited time to meet there. The gentlemen (two of them) were punctual so that was good. The problem was that the quote was high pressure and "I'll do it now for a premium". That's fine, but customers don't like negotiating in front of something broken in their residence. Moreover, they had a hard time installing the hose and it leaked (yes, they blamed a faulty replacement hose I had purchased, and they made me acknowledge as a CYA) but based on the total interaction I have some doubts. The biggest problem I have was the disparity on his quote for a new faucet altogether. His quote was about $550. I awarded that bid to a contractor that charged less than half that AND performed extra services. I wasted $220 on this visit so I can't recommend this vendor."

Install Boiler questions, answered by experts

Safety concerns with propane boilers include proper venting to prevent carbon monoxide buildup, secure gas line connections, and regular inspection of safety controls. Professional boiler installation and annual maintenance are essential to minimize risks. Having a carbon monoxide detector installed in your home is essential for early detection of any leaks or ventilation issues.

A furnace is a big unit where gas, heating oil, or electricity heats the air. The warmed air is then pushed back out through ducts and vents.

A boiler uses electricity, heating oil, or gas to heat water that is pushed into the room through a radiator. This is one of the oldest and most effective ways to heat a house, but radiators can also be unsightly and leave hot and cold spots in the room.

Heat pumps use a refrigerant to move heat from outside into the house and return it to the room through ducts and vents.

Boilers are equipped with multiple safety features to ensure safe operation. These include pressure relief valves to prevent overpressure, temperature high-limit switches to avoid overheating, and flame failure safety devices in gas boilers to cut off the gas supply if the flame goes out unexpectedly. Low water cutoffs prevent operation with insufficient water levels, and pressure gauges help monitor pressure levels. Ventilation and flue systems prevent the buildup of harmful gasses. Boilers often feature error code systems for automatic shutdown during malfunctions and gas leak detection for safety. Regular maintenance is crucial to ensure these safety features function correctly.

Heat pumps are significantly more efficient than boilers, typically providing three to four times the amount of heat for the electricity they consume. While boilers run on fossil fuels, heat pumps use only electricity. This efficiency can lead to long-term savings on operating and maintenance costs. However, heat pumps have a higher upfront installation price compared to boilers. Despite their lower efficiency, boilers remain a popular choice for many homeowners, with 8 million in the United States alone, due to their lower initial cost and less intensive installation process. Ultimately, the best choice depends on your home's infrastructure, your budget, and your personal heating priorities.

Installation costs range from $4,000 to $12,000, depending on unit size, efficiency rating, and labor.
