".  they replaced some broken pavers, fixed the edges of my driveway and patio, did some other repairs and leveled things out.     They cleaned all the pavers w/a power washer,  put polymeric sand down, swept it in, blew off the excess and wet it down.  then sealed (i think)
they did a really nice job, we have a huge driveway and both the driveway and patio look GREAT.  Jose explained a lot of things to  me and the owner was very responsive.  ALL the workers were neat, polite and did a good job. I would recommend them highly

"They were a pleasure to work with. They responded to my call right away, which was very much appreciated. They came to my house and gave me a quote within two days of contacting them. I assumed I would have to schedule something for a few weeks from now, but they were able to come and do the work within a week of getting the quote. The cost was very reasonable and the work was excellent. They stayed in contact throughout the job to make sure I was satisfied with the progress and did exactly what I wanted. They were professional throughout the process and cleaned up the area when the job was completed. I was very pleased with the results and I would highly recommend them and will call them for future jobs."

"One of the few people in the area to install dry wells. Stopping my back yard from flooding has reduced so many other problems I was having with my foundation and water coming into the house. They did such a good job I hired them for concrete work also."

"Luis quoted on the driveway and walkway in July and stated that he could do the work in 1-2 weeks - a better lead time than the others that we called for quotes. Most of the phone calls & texts were answered within minutes. He applied for the permit directly with the village and it was ready 2 weeks later. Luis said that he could start a week after that and after I got the Julie dig number he did the work the next day. I thought that it would be a 2 day process with the demo and permit approvals but it only took a single day. The village came by during the process a couple of times and approved and we were pleasantly surprised to have it all done in a day. They blocked off the driveway with caution tape to prevent others from driving or walking in it before it dried. They came by the next morning to take the support beams on the sides used to keep the poured concrete in place. I wish that they had taken a little more of the rocks/dirt along the sides of the driveway but I moved those myself with about 30 minutes of work so that the landscaper could lay topsoil and grass seed a few days later. Luis's crew also graciously took a basketball post in concrete at the side that we asked the to remove as well as some spare bricks that the previous homeowner had left. We're very pleased with the quality of work and will hire Designers Concrete again and recommend them as well.

Asphalt Driveways questions, answered by experts

The answer to whether or not you need to get a permit before you start your driveway can vary widely based on local ordinances and the scope of your driveway ideas. In most urban and suburban areas, a permit is needed before building a new driveway to ensure that a homeowner is using safe materials and proper drainage practices while designing and constructing a new driveway. In some rural areas, a homeowner may not be required to apply for a permit. When building a new driveway on your own, always check with your local building department to see if you need to request a permit. When hiring a driveway contractor, verify that the right permits are being used before driveway construction begins.

Yes, it is possible to pave over an existing driveway, but whether it's the right choice depends on several factors. If the underlying structure of your current driveway is still strong, concrete or asphalt resurfacing can be a cost-effective way to prolong its life. However, if your driveway has significant issues like potholes, deep cracks, or other inconsistencies, it is best to remove the old driveway and start from scratch. Key factors to consider include the current driveway's condition, the compatibility of the new material, the added thickness and height, and the necessary surface preparation.

The choice between asphalt and concrete depends on your priorities, budget, and climate.

Concrete is generally more durable, lasting up to 50 years with minimal upkeep, and offers more customization options like staining and stamping, which can add more to a home's value. However, it is more expensive upfront and can be prone to cracking in cold climates where water can freeze and expand.

Asphalt is typically cheaper and quicker to install and is easier to repair. It performs better in colder climates. However, it requires more maintenance, including regular resealing, has a shorter lifespan, and can get hot and sticky in intense sunlight.

Ultimately, if durability and long-term value are key, concrete is often the better choice. If upfront cost and performance in cold weather are more important, asphalt may be preferable.

In most cases, you don’t need a permit to repave your driveway, although some exceptions exist. If you’re widening your driveway and plan on widening the apron as well, you’ll usually need a permit from the Department of Transportation in your area. This permit costs between $50 and $300 in most cases. Most municipalities will also require a certified and insured contractor do the work relating to the apron and curb cut. You can contact your building department or ask your paving company if you need a permit. Your driveway professional will usually pull the permit for you.

An asphalt overlay or top coat costs between $3 and $7 per square foot. For a standard, single-car driveway that’s 10 feet wide and 20 feet long, that’s a total of between $600 and $1,400. For a two-car driveway, you’re looking at a total of between $1,200 and $3,000.
