Ibbotson Heating & Air Conditioning Company, located in Arlington Heights, Illinois, is a family-owned and operated heating and cooling business that has served the Northwest Suburban Chicago for over 74 years. Founded in a small barn, located in Mt. Prospect, Illinois, by brothers Ralph and Arthur Ibbotson in 1946, Ibbotson Heating & Air Conditioning Company consisted of one employee and a Chevy station wagon. Second generation partners Ralph Ibbotson Jr., (Son of Ralph Sr.) and the late John R. Kelly (Son-In-Law of Art) took the company and grew it from a small operation to the most dependable and reliable heating and cooling company in the northwest suburbs of Chicago. Now Ibbotson Heating and Cooling is in its third generation With Ralph Ibbotson Jr., still a current owner along with partner Rich Okolita (Son-In-Law of John) and Rich's wife Jacqueline (daughter of John) who is installation/sales manager. Ralph’s son, Gregory is the NATE-certified service manager; son-in-law Brian is one of the NATE-certified salesman, daughter Joanna is the accountant, and daughter-in-law Kimberly is the service administrative assistant. Ibbotson Heating & Air Conditioning Company maintains a highly-trained staff of NATE-certified service technicians and is up-to-date on the latest high-efficient air conditioning and heating technologies. Ibbotson's goal is to provide high-quality service and installation. Ibbotson Heating & Air Conditioning Company is proud to be a Lennox Premier Dealer (Lennox’s highest dealer rating). We are also an authorized Carrier dealer providing our customers with many options for their home comfort needs. We pride ourselves in doing the job right.

"Requested an appointment for a quote for replacing a 20-year-old inherited system that was failing but limping along. Before the scheduled date, the system completely failed. Called Ibbotson, and they were able to move my appointment up to the following day. Rich was on time, thorough, and gave us a very good quote. He called to verify stock on the unit we needed, and was able to schedule a team for install the next day. Install team was on time and very professional. They took good care to make sure they didn't damage our house or floors. Advised on everything they were doing, and why it was important. Hauled everything away efficiently. No attempts to upsell to things we didn't request/need. Gave great advice on how to keep the system running smoothly for years. On the one very minor "damage" item (leaked a small amount of oil on driveway), they called my attention to it, cleaned it up with a drying compound, and advised on how to make it gone. They could have ignored this/hoped I wouldn't notice. Appreciate the professionalism. Could not have had a better experience. Great team effort between sales office, estimator, install crew."

"I used Netzel Plumbing twice a few years ago. I had positive experiences both times, so when my master bathroom toilet in my condo started running at night, I decided to use them again to resolve the issue. Big mistake. I don’t know if they’ve changed management or ownership, but my experience this time was completely different. The plumber came out on December 23 to inspect the toilet and told me that it looked like the issue was that the flapper seal needed to be replaced. He said he didn’t have that type of seal with him and needed to run to the store. He purchased the seal and came back to install it. He told me that the fill valve and angle stop should be updated as well, but it wasn’t urgent. He took out the old fill valve but then said he’d need the water shut off to install the new one. I had told the person who set up the appointment that my building needs advanced notice to shutoff my tier’s water and had been told that wouldn’t likely be needed. The plumber said I could schedule that at a later date since it wasn’t urgent. He noticed the tank was taking while to fill up so poured water from his bucket into the tank and then had me pay the invoice. Since I trusted his expertise and he seemed eager to be off to the next appointment since he was behind schedule due to his previous appointment, I didn’t ask him to stay to make sure the new seal worked properly. I assumed it would, but the next day I was unable to flush my toilet and when I tried filling the tank up with water it wouldn’t stay in the tank. I emailed the main address and texted the plumber to let them know the issue, which I thought might be due to the new seal since I did not have any issues flushing or the tank holding water before the appointment. The plumber said he’d try to find time to come out over the weekend, but since it was a holiday weekend, I said it could wait until Monday. No further word from him or any response from the company until I called back twice on Tuesday before finally having someone gets back to me. I relayed the problem to the company and they said the plumber would come out Wednesday night to check out the toilet. He came on Wednesday with another plumber and said the new seal was working, but sediment must be causing blockage in the fill valve from when he was working on it the previous week. I was told there was nothing he could do to fix the toilet and that I’d need to schedule yet another appointment to install a new fill valve and angle stop. I feel frustrated going from having a working toilet before my first appointment with Netzel to a week without a working toilet after the plumber’s first visit. In addition to being left without a working toilet, I also think I may have been overcharged. As a single woman, I’m always cautious about being taken advantage of, but thought I could trust their company due to previous experiences. After paying the invoice, I noticed how much higher the cost was compared to my 2018 appointment for a similar issue in my guest bath toilet that required a new seal as well. This 1.25 hour appointment cost me $247, yet I was charged $116 for 1.5 hours work on a similar toilet issue. I would hope they wouldn’t unfairly charge me higher pricing, but with all of the issues I’ve had with them this time, I can’t help but wonder if I was. I’ll be using another plumbing company to fix the toilet Netzel messed up since I sadly don’t feel I can trust them moving forward."

Water Softeners questions, answered by experts

To get utilities set up on a property, you first have to contact the local department of planning to determine whether your property is able to connect to public utilities. From there, you can work with a structural engineer and/or a building contractor to design the layout of utility lines on the property. The pros will need this information as they begin securing building permits before they can start adding lines.

If your property isn’t able to connect to public utilities, you’ll need to consider working with pros to develop a comfortable off-grid home that will meet your needs.

If your water softener repair is fairly straightforward, like a simple filter replacement, then you can probably do it yourself with little risk. However, anything beyond a simple fix should be addressed by someone with extensive plumbing expertise to avoid costly water softener problems, like leaks.

That said, even simple problems can be complicated to diagnose, particularly if your water softener is attached to a whole-house treatment system. So, unless you feel absolutely certain that the problem is an easy fix that you can take on yourself, it's probably best to hire a plumber to diagnose and fix the problem.

Installing a water softener could help reduce calcium buildup in your pool if your pool has high calcium hardness as a result of hard drinking water in your home. Pool softeners work by exchanging calcium and magnesium for sodium, so if you use softened water to top off your pool, it may help keep calcium hardness from rising over time. However, it won’t lower the calcium hardness of the water already in your pool and isn’t a practical way to control pool calcium levels. The average water softener installation cost is between $200 and $6,000.

Softener systems extend appliance life spans, improve skin and hair health, and reduce pipe buildup by removing minerals like calcium and magnesium.

Experts recommend that you put two to four bags of potassium chloride in your water softener every month. This amount depends on how much is in the bag (40 pounds is most common) and what your water softener manufacturer recommends. For more specific advice, talk to a water softener pro in your area and read the manual that came with your system.
