"Oliver and his partner were more than excellent. He was honest with his assessment and gave me a quote right away (not the cheapest, but it had the most value based on his experience/knowledge - HIS BID WAS VERY FAIR!!!). We talked with 4 vendors before deciding on New Age Masonry and couldn't be happier with our decision to hire them. We have been burned in the past with other contractors, so I am always on edge when dealing with them, but Oliver gives me a new reason to relax on that a bit. Please give him an opportunity, even if he isn't the lowest bid, because you will not be disappointed in his work. Very, very satisfied customer."

"Olsen Tuckpointing Company did a brilliant job of cleaning & tuckpointing our 91-year-old brick bungalow. We are delighted with the results and highly recommend Olsen if you need any kind of brickwork done. It wasn't a huge job, but with the home being as old as it is, we were concerned about getting it done right. The brick exterior had quite a few old mortar patches and some washed-out sections, and over the years the walls had collected a wide assortment of paint stains, hardware hangers and old screw holes. The textured, tan brick also looked pretty dingy, although we weren't sure how much was the original color and how much might be accumulated dirt. The attached pictures show the after & before of dull brown bricks cleaned to a warm, clean gold. I didn't take closeups of the repairs, but I am impressed by how seamlessly the new work blends in with the older mortar. Everyone was friendly, knowledgeable, prompt, and professional, and I have only good things to say about them all. The estimator was able to come out quickly after the initial contact, he did a comprehensive walk-though, and he provided a clear, reasonable, and detailed estimate in a timely fashion--along with an explanation of the whole process from start to finish, so we would know what to expect. The office staff was great about getting things scheduled and making sure we knew when the crews would be showing up, the crews introduced themselves on arrival, and they were all friendly, careful, and incredibly skilled. We are 100% pleased as can be & will certainly be calling Olsen Tuckpointing when next we need any masonry work performed."

"Scott Chaffee and his team did great work on my brick fence. He was prompt and communicative throughout the process. While I did not solicit a ton of bids for this particular job, Scott's quote was dramatically lower than the other bid I got (less than half). The work was just completed this week and it looks great. I will happily hire Scott again the next time I need masonry work done."

"I had a new cap, the top six courses of brick replaced, and the rest tuck-pointed on my fireplace chimney. The chimney looks new, the worksite looks as though they were never here. Hardworking, respectable guys who would always take time to answer questions. Beautiful work at a very reasonable price. Highly recommended."

"My experience with 83 Masonry was EXCELLENT! We hired them to tuck-point and partially rebuild our two chimneys. They started the project on time and showed up everyday ahead of time. We have new roof and AC, so before they started any work, they have protected the roof and build protection canopy over the AC to make sure nothing would get damaged. Very professional, knowledgeable, punctual and safe. Not only were the chimneys fixed, they improved the look of the house. We are EXTREMELY happy with the craftsmanship and we would recommend them for any type of masonry work."

Masonry questions, answered by experts

Stair-step cracking in brick courses indicates failed mortar joints requiring masonry work. However, horizontal cracking in basement walls signals lateral soil pressure, which requires a structural engineer rather than a simple patch. If you spot gaps between brick veneer and window frames on newer Aurora homes, address the failing caulking or flashing. Always hire a licensed professional to evaluate leaning chimneys or severe structural damage immediately.

Helpful?

Homes built before 1960 in IL feature original brick construction that requires ongoing upkeep. Look for visible deterioration like spalling brick faces, stair-step cracking, or recessed mortar joints. If you feel a gap in the mortar with your finger, schedule masonry work immediately. Homes with brick chimneys, concrete block foundations, or retaining walls on sloped lots are prime candidates for routine inspections and structural repairs.

Helpful?

Routine maintenance for masonry work in Aurora involves addressing damage from frequent freeze-thaw cycles. Inspect mortar joints every five to ten years, and schedule repointing when you see crumbling or cracking. Treat white salt deposits, known as efflorescence, on your brick surfaces. Apply water-repellent sealers to horizontal surfaces like steps to block moisture. Finally, inspect your chimney annually for spalling bricks or damaged crowns before winter arrives.

Helpful?

Yes, eco-friendly masonry work options exist throughout Aurora. Reclaimed brick from local demolitions reduces material waste while preserving historic character. Contractors also use lime-based mortar, which is environmentally friendly to produce and improves long-term wall performance in humid climates. Additionally, well-maintained masonry provides excellent thermal mass, which naturally moderates interior temperatures and improves your home's energy efficiency during extreme weather swings across IL.

Helpful?

Build a seasonal routine for masonry work by checking for specific weather-related stress. In early spring, inspect your home for new cracks or spalling caused by harsh Aurora winters. Schedule necessary repairs during early summer when temperatures remain moderate. In late summer, check for thermal expansion cracks. Finally, perform a late fall inspection to seal open joints and clear drainage paths before the freezing IL winter begins.
