We hired DAL to replace our existing wood deck with a composite one. They also replaced one of our gutters, and tuckpointed the masonry around the bottom of our house. Tim and his team were extremely professional, communicative, and did a wonderful job. The new deck looks fantastic. We’d definitely use DAL for another project

This is our HOA's second time working with Tans. They've always been extremely communicative, professional and prompt. When receiving quotes for our most recent roofing project, Tans was willing to price match against competitors. We will definitely return to Tans with future tuckpointing and roofing needs

E & B Masonry & Porch Construction, Inc.
5.0
The work completed to rebuild my entire brick and concrete porch speaks for itself. It is OUTSTANDING!!! E & B Masonary are very professional, easy to work with and takes great pride in their work!!! They did not overcharge the work for this project. They cleaned up after the work was finished, made every effort to answer all my questions, and obtained good brick samples for my approval before the start of the project!!! I have other work needed to be completed on my property and will not hesitate to use this company again!!!!! Everyone loves our new porch!!!!

Star Tuckpointing Inc
5.0
I can't say enough good words about Peter, Voytek and their crew. We've had a few masonry issues in our building. In two instances, they identified that the cause of leakage was not with the brickwork, but with deteriorated window caulking, or the downspout. We appreciated their honesty. I looked high and low for a company to caulk the exterior of our high third level windows. STAR came through for us. They used a bosun chair to do the job. STAR also repaired and replaced bricks which were in disrepair, on the third level deck. Their workmanship was excellent. Peter and Voytek are very professional and knowledgeable. STAR communicated very clearly with us about their suggestions and plans

Edmar Corporation
5.0
I just hired Edmar to replace a glass block window in our brick house with a more modern double hung window, and they did a great job! I've also hired them in the past to rebuild our parapet and replace other old windows and the work is always great. They're easy to coordinate schedules with and the quality of work is top notch. I'll definitely be hiring them again for any future masonry projects

Jan and his team were wonderful! Arrived on time and completed the work quickly. They did a fantastic job and fixed all the issues (cracks in foundation, brick repair, sealing, etc.). The price was also reasonable. Very nice to work with and would hire again/recommend!

Olsen Tuckpointing Co
5.0
Olsen Tuckpointing Company did a brilliant job of cleaning & tuckpointing our 91-year-old brick bungalow. We are delighted with the results and highly recommend Olsen if you need any kind of brickwork done. It wasn't a huge job, but with the home being as old as it is, we were concerned about getting it done right. The brick exterior had quite a few old mortar patches and some washed-out sections, and over the years the walls had collected a wide assortment of paint stains, hardware hangers and old screw holes. The textured, tan brick also looked pretty dingy, although we weren't sure how much was the original color and how much might be accumulated dirt. The attached pictures show the after & before of dull brown bricks cleaned to a warm, clean gold. I didn't take closeups of the repairs, but I am impressed by how seamlessly the new work blends in with the older mortar. Everyone was friendly, knowledgeable, prompt, and professional, and I have only good things to say about them all. The estimator was able to come out quickly after the initial contact, he did a comprehensive walk-though, and he provided a clear, reasonable, and detailed estimate in a timely fashion--along with an explanation of the whole process from start to finish, so we would know what to expect. The office staff was great about getting things scheduled and making sure we knew when the crews would be showing up, the crews introduced themselves on arrival, and they were all friendly, careful, and incredibly skilled. We are 100% pleased as can be & will certainly be calling Olsen Tuckpointing when next we need any masonry work performed

J L CONTRACTOR SERVICES

Excellently. The masons made quick work of the demo up front, taking a day to remove the parapet and half a day to get the chimneys down. The rebuild was more deliberate, getting the colors right, making sure the new common brick was plumb and the decorative brick looked perfect. Once the parapet was up, the roofing crew came in and flashed the new masonry tightly, applying reflective paint and patches to wick the water away from the brick. The roof was applied over the top brick with a slight overhang that later gets hidden by the drip tray. The capstones came back particularly beautifully. The cleanup was very effective, having red mortar meant it took a bit more detail to get it right, but they did it. The work is strong and looks good

"We contracted with Coast to Coast Masonry after Romen visited our house and unlike the other three contractors that visited, was the only one to climb on the roof and notice that the original concrete chimney cap had cracked. What was originally a simple brick repair and tuck pointing job became a major chimney repair, but we were ready for that and agreed that this isn't a job that gets less expensive the longer it is put off. The mason team arrived 2 weeks after the the contract was signed and spent 1.5 weeks repairing, replacing, sealing, and tuck pointing every distressed brick on our house. It took them two days just to do the demo on the top of the chimney. They found multiple instances of additional damage and never raised the price. After the work was completed we knew that we'd not only stopped the clock on the brick damage that was occurring due to corners cut in the original construction, but that we'd built something that would really stand the test of time. Coast to Coast Masonry was fantastic to work with and we will definitely hire them again should the need arise.

"A mixed review—great final product, terrible process. We were incredibly upfront about our budget and our priorities. We explained that the contract absolutely needed to come in below $40,000—knowing that there would be change orders and unexpected costs along the way that would likely increase that number. After some back and forth, Matt came back with some options—it came in at $47,000 but then he broke out a few "extras,", we could get it under $40,000. These “extras” were not important to us, so we were thrilled! I was out of the country at the time, but Matt told my wife that we needed to sign before a certain date (and put down a deposit) to “lock in the price” and that when I came back, if there were issues with the design we could revisit that with no penalty—which ended up not being true at all. A few problems occurred almost immediately. As we looked at the floor plans they had drawn up, we couldn’t quite understand how they fit this extra bathroom into our space.- Turns out, they didn’t measure correctly and added two feet of floor space to our upstairs.
So we just asked for our money back. We circled back to our conversations with Matt about the fact that we could get a refund if the plans didn’t work out. He says that is not an option. The director of sales, Kevin, calls us and we explain. He defends Matt, tells us we want “luxury items” and that is not realistic for our price, We explain we want our money back—he says that is not an option. So we start over, use the 4th bedroom like originally planned, tell him the priorities that we told Matt, and we go back to the architects. Kevin says, “We can definitely do this for under $40,000.” So we keep walking down the road, similar things happen, but not to the same extent. Our numbers starts creeping again. We show the architect the e-mail I had from Kevin saying we can do this for under $40,000 and just like that, they take off $7,000 instantly. Why couldn’t have we done that before? We finally got to a place with a good plan and we were happy with the scope of work they were going to do, so we started. Our project manger really struggled. I would say 75% of the time she was on site it was to collect a check.
Lastly, we have the change orders. We get that there are unforeseen costs go into construction. The problem is, some of the change orders were for things that were out in the open. On a load bearing wall, the change order came 2 weeks after the work was done (most of the change orders came after the work was already done— which was entirely different than the process they laid out at the beginning) and was pretty high. $1,700 to put in a small header. They told me that if I didn’t pay for these change orders, that the contractors were not going to get paid. He literally said, “You are taking money out of Oliver’s pocket if you don’t approve this change order…” I could go on but at the end of the day, we love our master bath/closet. We REALLY enjoyed working with Rod—our architect. But overall--rough, rough process.
Update: After my review, I received a call from the owner, Dan. We spoke at length about the project and he was very apologetic. He learned some things about our project that he previously did not know and I was able to expand on our experience to help him better understand some of the challenges. He was grateful for the feedback and assured me that the entire team is doing a debrief of our project to prevent some of these mistakes from happening again. Specifically, he mentioned that the "change order" process will be tightened up to avoid confusion for the home owner. I really enjoyed my conversation with Dan and it meant a lot to me that he reached out. If Design First indeed addresses some of these issues, I would have no problem recommending them or using them for a future project.

"From initial concept discussion to finish of both projects, the entire process took almost 4 years, which is a good thing. The design process was very collaborative. Ed approached the project as a question of what bothered us about our space and why. Then he came up with a conceptual plan, which initially we did not like because it was not what we had in our head. Instead of flatly rejecting it he told us to think about his conceptual plan for while and feel it out. He explained that what we had in our head would be extremely expensive to do. That is what we needed to hear. Eventually his plan grew on us, with some added tweaks (more closet space). Now that we have lived in our new space for a couple years after having several parties, there is pretty much nothing we regret spatially or in choice of materials. Our space has been a pleasure to live in and we especially appreciate the remodel when we have large gatherings. Ed is a fabulous DESIGNER. I put that in bold because he is not a licensed architect in IL. Ed has an architecture background, probably degree too, but he contracts out the drafting work to another architect that we never met. Everything was done with proper permits. We found out that Ed is not a licensed architect in IL months into the process. It did not impact the end product whatsoever. Ed explained that he does not enjoy the drafting and would rather focus on project management and design. Thus Ed will always refer to him as a "Designer" and never "Architect" Overall it was a pleasure to work with Ed and we are very pleased with the home we have now.

"From beginning to end, the quality of the initial consultation with Hynek, the cost of the estimate, the tear down and rebuild was outstanding. The men who did the tear down came on time and worked tirelessly to maximize their efforts at the house. The gentleman who performed the rebuild were high quality craftsman-masons who really know how to work with concrete and bluestone. I was very impressed with their attention to detail. The guys took their time and worked meticulously placing the stones in a symmetrical pattern. I am thrilled with the final outcome. My front stoop which is pretty big is now a stunning, strong and solid rebuild that will last for years. Thanks Hynek.
