"We’ve had a lot of crews in our home for various projects over the years, and I have to say this was one of the most courteous. They worked hard, navigating through our kitchen to access the basement and I really appreciated their efforts. Thank you MTU, we now have safe walls in our cellar and fresh beams to keep the house standing ;)"

Warranties offered

"They did a wonderful job fixing up our foundation damage. And they have given us a 5-year warranty, which means if there's any leak in the next 5 years, they will come right back and fix it. I do not doubt that the work will hold up well though. The whole project went down smoothly, and we are very happy that they were able to fix our foundation."

Masonry questions, answered by experts

Yes, you have several excellent options for eco-friendly masonry work in Sandpoint. Because of the cold climate, insulated concrete forms provide outstanding thermal efficiency. You can also incorporate reclaimed regional stone, like basalt or granite, to reduce transport emissions. For historic properties, repointing brick saves materials over full replacement. Check local utility programs for efficiency upgrades that cover your building envelope.

Helpful?

The severe freeze-thaw cycles in Sandpoint dictate the success of your masonry work. Materials must be rated for severe exposure, and contractors must use high-strength mortar designed for cold climates. Proper drainage, meticulous flashing, and footings dug below the 24-inch frost depth prevent premature failure. Hire a local professional who understands northern ID weather to ensure your project lasts.

Helpful?

Chimneys face the highest risk for masonry work due to heavy snow loads and direct freeze-thaw exposure. Retaining walls and foundation walls also require frequent attention because of the clay soils and high water table in Sandpoint. Additionally, exterior steps and walkways suffer surface damage from road salt and constant freezing, while outdoor fire pits frequently experience frost heave.

Helpful?

Watch for deteriorating mortar joints, which allow water to freeze and expand during ID winters, causing severe damage. Horizontal cracks in your foundation or retaining walls indicate active frost heave requiring immediate attention. Additionally, a leaning chimney or displaced cracks mean the structure is shifting. Address these masonry work issues promptly to prevent extensive structural damage and interior moisture problems.

Helpful?

You can safely clear leaves and debris from weep holes and retaining wall drains to improve water flow. Redirect your downspouts away from the foundation to reduce moisture stress. Before the ID winter arrives, apply a temporary masonry sealant to hairline cracks to block water. Always hire a licensed professional for structural masonry work to ensure your home remains safe.
