"Fred and his crew quickly and efficiently did all my window trim and sills through out my home. They handled tricky door frame and rounded windows artfully Fred offered advice where necessary, which I appreciated because he has the wisdom to know how the finished look would be. My husband was impressed and we hired them to finish my crown molding next week. I feel lucky to find a good Carpenter With a very respectful crew. We highly recommend them."

"We were so impressed with the job that Ken did installing wainscoting in our home ! He has such a fine eye for detail and design and is very particular for the quality of workmanship he does. We were also very pleased with Ken communicating to us when he would be arriving and the time needed to complete the project. If you’re looking for outstanding workmanship, reasonable price, helpful suggestions and reliable service, then hire K2 Carpentry - you will be impressed and very pleased with the outcome. We Will definitely recommend Ken to family & friends!!"

"Job consisted of replacing porch brick tile and removing and replacing porch 4 x 4s and railings. Porch is 33 ft by 6 ft. 4x4s were anchored to the porch by Simpson strong ties. Railings were 6 ft and 8 ft in length and Required shortening to fit space. Communication between Handyman by Henderson and owner was excellent. The workmanship was excellent. Jim and Rinda Callan, owners, recommends Handyman by Henderson."

"Julio is the most professional person I’ve worked with in 15 years! Honest, hard working, exceptionally skilled and willing to sacrifice to get your job done ASAP. Could not ask for, nor imagine a better person to work with. He installed a pocket door and it’s perfect. Left perfect amount of space for the surrounding drywall, and perfected all of the framing around the door. Perfect!!"

Carpentry questions, answered by experts

When hanging a door frame, it’s recommended that you use screws, not nails. Screws are more secure, easier to tighten, and easier to remove if you need to adjust the frame. On average, the cost to replace a door frame is about $400, but you can save on labor costs if you’re confident in your ability to DIY the project.

Joists do distribute their load to beams, but they don’t sit on top of the beams. Instead, home builders nail or screw the joists directly to the beams such that the end of the joist butts up against the edge of the beam. Beams can sit on other beams for support, but you’ll never see a joist sitting on top of a beam or another joist.

It’s sometimes safe to replace a load-bearing wall with a beam, but you need a structural engineer to sign off on the project. You’ll also likely have to upgrade to a steel I-beam or another material that’s stronger than wood to maintain the level of support you need without the wall underneath.

When deciding if you should use 2x6 or 2x8 deck joists, consider the size of the deck, joist spacing, and materials. Larger decks, larger-spaced joists, and weaker wood all require more support, meaning they need larger joists. For example, 2x8 redwood joists spaced 16 inches apart can only safely span up to 10 feet and 7 inches. On the other hand, 2x10 southern pine joists spaced 12 inches apart can be as big as 16 feet and 2 inches. If you aren’t sure what size joist is best for your project, speak with your deck builder.

No rules state how much of a load-bearing wall can be removed. Rather, you need to adequately support any area that is removed. Support should always be added to as much wall area is being removed. Failing to support the area properly will result in structural damage.
