Courteous, friendly and with reasonable pricing, he came out to complete the work the following work day and provided great, high quality work. "Gotta love Angie’s List! I googled top rated electrical service companies and sent inquiries to install a generator outlet on my circuit breaker panel. after several days with no response I turned to Angie’s list. Within hours every one of the companies responded. I accepted SWD’s quote and within days the work was completed as promised. Their electrician was on time, extremely knowledgeable as he explained the pros and cons of how to complete the job, and might I add, patient & kind. Bryan took time to speak with my son over the phone as we discussed our options. Before leaving, Bryan made a video to make sure I know how to hook the generator up & use the interlock correctly. As a retired high school teacher, I appreciate honesty, hard work & excellence. I highly recommend SWD."

Electrical questions, answered by experts

Electric water heaters use a high amount of electricity, so they’re best for homeowners who subsidize their electric bill with solar or who live in an area with inexpensive electricity. For others, gas water heaters versus electric water heaters may be the more cost-effective solution, with the added bonus of heating water quickly and efficiently. No matter which you choose, you can lower your water temperature as low as possible to keep costs down.

Full home electrical inspections are mandatory if you’re buying a new home, but if you’re just looking for a safety checkup, you have some flexibility. If you don’t have any concerns and your property is relatively new, a basic inspection is usually sufficient. If it’s been a long time since your home was last inspected, or it’s an older home, a full home inspection can help catch any concerns that may fly under the radar.

Natural gas and electricity rates vary significantly based on location, and pricing can change over time, too. It’s possible that in locations where natural gas is particularly inexpensive, it will cost less than grid-based electricity will. However, you should also factor in the generator’s initial costs and maintenance needs, as well as its noise level and if it can comfortably power all your home appliances.

The number of outdoor outlets that can be on one circuit depends on the circuit's capacity and the electrical load of each outlet. Outdoor outlets should ideally be on a dedicated circuit that is not shared with other outlets, and each outlet should be rated for at least 15 amps. A circuit rated for at least 20 amps is recommended. It’s important to use GFCI protection for all outdoor outlets to prevent electrical shocks. Overall, it's crucial to avoid overloading the circuit and take necessary safety precautions.

When wiring a switch, the power typically comes into the receptacle first. The neutral wire goes straight to the outlet, while the hot wire is split. You'll need a wire nut to splice the hot wire back to one of the receptacles, but you will also tie another wire into that same wire nut and run to the switch. That way, you can control the flow of electricity to that particular receptacle by turning the switch on and off.
