Customers say: True professional

"Matt, Eric and team were great! they were here when they said they'd be here. Matt checked in almost every day even if he wasn't personally on the build that day. They had a "customer is always right" mentality and didn't penny pinch on change orders. Half way through the job Matt realized that the natural gas fire insert installation was more complex than his team's skills. He immediately sourced a specialized contractor to do that part of the job which gave us all a tremendous amount of confidence. The attention to detail was great and nothing was too big or too small to discuss. We are extremely satisfied with the end product. It looks great!"

"Our tile contractor gave him our name to give us an estimate on the work we wanted done on renovating both our bathrooms floor to ceiling. He made an appointment with us that he confirmed, kept & arrived on time. At that time I had a plan to switch the master shower with the toilet to give us a larger shower in the corner. Guy suggested another way to make our shower bigger, more user friendly & not move doors & make more work. His contract stated that it would take 35 work days or nearly 6 weeks to complete all the work. It also specified when we would make payments & how much work would be done prior to payments. We understood there may be a couple of things not covered in the contract because they could not see under the tub or in the walls behind tile. We approved the plan & he came back a week later with a comprehensive computer generated estimate that was twice the budget we had hoped to stay within. We had previously had another bid that was not in writing, not specific & half the price. We agreed to the bid of Hernandez Construction because it covered everything in each bath, each closet, each door, and each wall. The bid was totally specific as to who was responsible for purchasing every building supply & fixture we wanted. We were purchasing some of our items through Direct Buy so we were responsible for those & it was noted on the contract. We signed the contract because it was so thorough & we felt like he was completely honest & above board with every issue. We were called prior to work starting & told what to remove from what area & how to make the house more accessible by taking down pictures, shelves & accent pieces in the hall so they didn't get knocked down during demolition or work on the rooms. On Sept. 13, 2010 the work was started at 8:00 am. Guy's father, Guy Senior & Gabriel showed up to tear out the entire bathrooms. They covered our wood floor with paper, our carpet with plastic & put up plastic sheeting walls to confine as much dust & mess as possible. Every day they showed up on time, worked all morning, took their lunch outside sitting on the concrete steps. I finally couldn't stand the thought of them working so hard & not being comfortable during lunch that I gave them each a folding patio chair to sit in during lunch. Every evening when they left my house was as neat as it could possibly get with all the work going on & all our things scattered over the house. They also put their working materials, folding chairs & tools either in their trailer or our garage. They left my yard clean & picked up any mess they had made. We needed a toilet in our master for a few days so they worked mostly on the hall bath. They were here every day for at least 3 weeks before the tile contractor was contacted to take measurements for tile & granite countertop installation. Both these men & the younger Guy were very respectful, listened to any concern I had, never swore, never raised their voices to each other, never spoke Spanish in front of us & just listened to a soft radio & laughed at times. We felt they were totally trustworthy. We left our home many times during this renovation (sometimes for days at a time) & were never concerned about our home or possessions. We have two very nosey, playful dogs that wanted to play with the workers. We had to put them out on the patio & lock their dog door so they wouldn't be in the way. When we were not at home the guys left our house locked, alarm set, & dogs in with their door open. They were very easy to work with. When I had a question about an electrical plug fixture that we had agreed to which wasn't in one day, Senior called Junior & within minutes we had a fixture in the exact spot where I had wanted it. Turns out it was misstated in the contract to put a fixture at each sink instead of 2 in each bathroom. Sinch our master only had one sink it was confusing for Senior. I was in the bathroom & bedroom many times observing what was going on & they patiently explained what they were doing & why. We now have two beautiful bathrooms that came out better than we had expected thanks to this crew. Any time I had a question that the guys on scene couldn't answer they called the owner Guy Junior & got an answer for me. This renovation came in 4 days over the budgeted time because the tile contractor had a problem with personnel & held it all up for more than a week. It also came in only $250. over budget because we had to purchase a couple items that were not seen until the sheetrock, tubs & tile were removed. We were approaced on this cost & agreed to it before it was undertaken. If I could afford it I would have this crew here every day to update the rest of my home. When we get the money saved to update our kitchen we will definitely use them again. Believe me thay are trustworthy, kind, caring, wonderful to have around & work with & a joy to have in your home. Anyone is at liberty to call me or come & see the work done in our home. Guy can give you our phone number. You can't go wrong with this construction company."

"Working with Arno at Amsterdam Woodworks has been an amazing experience. Both my wife and are very creative, skilled in many aspects of construction and remodeling and consider ourselves to be obsessive perfectionists. Because of that, we take on many aspects of our projects ourselves but cabinet making is not something we would tackle. So when it was time to partner with someone that was equally obsessed with perfection, we were so lucky to have found Amsterdam Woodworks... and Arno has not disappointed. The craftsmanship and quality of the cabinetry is amazing. We had our choice of wood species and we ended up with a customized stain on alder that tied the cabinetry into our floors and other major furnishings. Arno provided multiple iterations of stain samples on large pieces of wood for us to review together with our furnishings, counters and lighting before we made a final selection. And now that we know what the stain recipe is, we can have it recreated if we need additional cabinets or do touch-up. Our project included a rather large and odd-shaped peninsula. This was a complicated piece with multiple non-standard angles leaving the potential for wasted space. Arno was able to make all areas accessible and functional. The installation has gone extremely well and Arno was always there when he needed to be. And the integration with other trades was smooth. Arno initially installed the cabinet boxes without drawers and doors to ensure that other trades wouldn't damage them in the process of them doing their work. I can't tell you how many times we've had plumbers, electricians, sheet-rockers and flooring trades damage cabinetry by being careless. This was simply brilliant! When our project started, we met with multiple cabinet makers. The scope included the entire kitchen plus custom cabinetry in our dining room. None of others were as attentive as Amsterdam Woodworks in making sure they understood what we wanted and making sure their proposals reflected it. Although Amsterdam Woodworks wasn't the lowest cost, they were by far the best value by a wide margin. We were not change-ordered to death on small tweaks and minor changes we made during the process. And the best part is we had Arno's full attention throughout. Beyond his amazing craftsmanship, Arno has been wonderful to work with. At no time have we ever felt it was an imposition to contact him whenever we needed to. He always has a positive outlook and truly enjoys his work ... and it shows."

"We recently had Mega Power Electric Inc install a solar system and panels. The President and provided excellent communication all the way through the process. He even met with us after installation to explain the almost incomprehensible PG&E bill. Although not the least expensive bid, his was competitive and I felt he was as interested in educating me about solar and the various types of panels and inverter systems as he was in selling a system. He demonstrated how the array of panels would meet our energy needs and as opposed to some of the other companies, wasn't selling us more than we needed. We are very satisfied with our solar system and I highly recommended Mega Power Electric Inc."

"I went with Expert Home Builders on a room addition. The big and expensive project and bog responsibility but I'm happy I hired this contractor. David and his team showed up on time and they were great from first day to end of this project. David was knowledgeable, honest and helpful. He informed me about working progress all the time and contacted me immediately if there was something important. His team worked hard, kept working area clean as possible, they were professional, friendly and quick also. The project was finished ahead of schedule and results are excellent. The quality of work is superb, overall experience excellent and price very acceptable. I would highly recommend Expert Home Builders to all people I know!"

Garages questions, answered by experts

Costs depend on the size of the garage, material quality, and additional features like lighting or workbenches.

It’s possible to use a torch to melt ice on your garage door, but we don’t recommend it. It’s very easy to bring the flame too close to the door, which can melt the weather stripping or even the garage door itself. You’ll melt ice quickly with a torch, but the damage you’re likely to cause can end up costing you a few hundred dollars to fix, which isn’t worth it. Instead, we recommend pouring hot water over the frozen area or using a less intense heat source, like a hair dryer or space heater.

One of the biggest disadvantages of glass garage doors is that they are not the best at insulating your garage. In the summer, heat can enter through the glass, while in the winter, heat can escape through the glass, increasing your electricity and gas bills as you crank up your HVAC unit. You can help mitigate the poorer insulation by investing in insulated glass and insulating your garage.

The best paint for a garage door depends on the door's material, the desired finish, and durability requirements.

Paint Type

The type of paint you need often depends on the material of your garage door:

  • Aluminum Doors: Typically require exterior acrylic paint.

  • Vinyl and Wood Doors: Exterior latex paint is usually recommended.

  • Steel Doors: Professionals often use latex or oil-based paint.

You can choose between acrylic, oil-based, and latex paints. Acrylic paint offers excellent UV and weather resistance and dries quickly, but may require multiple coats. Oil-based paints are very durable and may only need one coat, but they dry slowly and emit more VOCs. Latex paint is available in a wide range of colors and is forgiving to apply, but it can crack over time and may require a primer for even coverage. For an eco-friendly option, consider acrylic latex paint.

Paint Finish

You have a wide variety of finishes to choose from, including semi-gloss, gloss, satin, eggshell, and matte. The choice is largely based on personal preference, but many people opt for a semi-gloss or gloss finish. These finishes dry to a hard, durable surface that stands up well to humidity and regular wear and tear.

Regardless of the type or finish, it's crucial to use a quality exterior paint that can withstand the elements. Using a primer before painting will ensure better adhesion and a more even, long-lasting result.

Yes, you can pressure wash epoxy floors, but you must take precautions to avoid damaging the surface. While most epoxy floors can be cleaned with a mop, you might choose to pressure wash if the floor is stained, has ground-in dirt, or is covered with mold or mildew. To do so safely, first soak any stains or dirty areas with a gentle cleanser. Use a lower pressure setting with a gentle nozzle, such as a green, white, or black tip, or a 45-degree angled tip. Keep the spray nozzle at least 18 inches away from the floor to protect the surface. Using a surface cleaner attachment or a rotary scrubber can also help prevent overspray. Be cautious if using a power washer that heats the water, as the combination of heat and pressure may be too powerful and could damage the epoxy coating.
