Has a contractor ever told you “that’s impossible?” Mind’s Eye Construction believes in limitlessness. We want to build things that have never been built before. We are expert builders who can build and fix anything, and we do it with integrity, attention to detail, and joy. We want to create what your heart sees!

"Joel replaced a support post for my patio cover and installed new bracing. He used some wood that I had to save money. On another job, Joel finished my backyard seat wall, cutting the cap blocks to fit an odd diameter corner and securing the blocks to the wall. Joel is a quality worker that doesn’t mind questions so that I can learn from a professional! I’ve recommended him to several people who are also very satisfied. He’s the best!"

Handyman Contractor is a licensed general contractor that specializes in small to medium sized home repairs and remodeling. Since we opened in 1996, we have done work for over 30,000 clients in the Sacramento area. We focus on giving our clients the best service we can which is why we have Live 24/7 customer service and provide FREE in-home estimates. LICENSE #726641. COST DETERMINED BY JOB, NOT THE HOUR.

"The tilework was awful. Nothing lines up, they obviously used a hand-tool to cut the tiles and not a tile saw. Everything is chipped and broken looking, and the wall isn't flush. Some of the mortar is overfilled and some is underfilled. They didn't even use corner pieces when they should have. The drywall work was also really bad. The existing is light orange peel. The new looks like they meant to do a heavy orange peel, but it's just a blobby mess. They sprayed joint compound all over the place. 1 day in and the joint tape is already cracking. They didn't cover up a piece of reinforcing tape. They forgot to put a piece of drywall back where they should have in the closet, and they didn't put back trim they had removed.
The project was 2 weeks late on a one week project and way over budget if you count mold remediation, which was a separate contract. They found some mold and told me I needed to hire a mold inspector and remediator. His bid came in at $2800 and the mold inspection cost $350. I found out later that most contractors would have just cleaned it up themselves for a fee. And the CA Department of Public Health says that mold inspections are a waste of money. I mean it's a bathroom. What did you expect?
Then to top it all off, because of the delays, my house was robbed. I'm have no proof that the robbery was an inside job, but I'm adding it as a data point in case anyone else has this same experience. The tile guy always had his buddies coming in and out, so I wouldn't be surprised if it was one of those guys. At the very least, it wouldn't have happened if the project had been on time. They bought the wrong tile at the store which resulted in a huge cost and headache to me. Their bid didn't include any materials so it was very hard to compare with anyone else's. I should be happy now that this project was done, but now I just feel like they cheated me out of all my savings, and I need to redo my bathroom again. They should be ashamed of the work they do."

Handyman Services questions, answered by experts

Angi Expert

The average cost to hire a handyman ranges from about $40 to $140 per hour. Average project cost ranges between $180 and $700, but the cost per hour and per project depends heavily on the type, size, and complexity of the project. The pro’s experience level and your location also factor into how much a handyman charges per hour or per project. You can also expect to pay higher rates or additional fees for emergency services, or around periods of high customer demand, like holidays.

Handymen/contractors will charge anywhere from $50 to $175 per hour. The hourly rate is based upon their experience level, overhead costs, and the cost of living in that specific area. Many handymen/contractors will charge by the job.

Tipping a handyman is not a requirement or necessarily expected, as they should build a fair wage into the price of the job. However, some people will tip a handyman around $10 to $20 per hour or the equivalent of a day’s pay, depending on the size of the job. But it’s up to your discretion. There are no set rules for tipping a handyman service, but if they did a great job and you’re so inclined to tip, it’s encouraged and will likely be received with thanks.

A tip is not necessary. If you feel that a handyman did a great job for you, the best thing you can do for them is boost their reputation by leaving reviews on as many sites as possible and spreading by word of mouth how good they are. A tip is temporary but a reputation creates a business!

There are several questions or things to know before hiring a handyman to do any work in your home.

  • What kind of work do they do?

  • Do they have proper licensing?

  • Do they charge for estimates?

  • Is the estimate for both labor and materials?

  • Do they provide references?

  • Do you provide a guarantee?

  • When can you start and finish the job?

  • Do you have any before and after photos of your work?

  • How long have you been doing this kind of work?

  • Do you clean up and dispose of waste when the job is finished?

Is your company bonded and insured?

What is your warranty on service and materials?

Do you provide phone and/or on-site estimates?

Do you accept credit cards as form of payment?

Does your company offer financing for bigger projects?

Do you offer discounts for senior citizens/military (if applicable)?

Where can I see client reviews and samples of work?

Do you have any certifications or awards?

Yes, you should hire a handyman who’s licensed, certified, and insured, if possible. States have different requirements for handyman licensing, registration, and certifications. If licensing is required in your area, you may pay more for a licensed handyman with experience than one who is not licensed or certified, but you’re likely to get a better end result for your project. Be sure to check our state licensing tool to review the local handymen guidelines.

Being certified and/or licensed typically provides the customer with a level of comfort when hiring a handyman, but is not always a guarantee of quality work. Ask the handyman to explain what his or her process to complete your project is, and if you hire this person, check on the work, ask questions, make suggestions. After all, it's your project, your money, and you deserve quality work.
