"Perfectly. They cleaned everything up, explained how the system worked and how often it needs attention, and hauled away the old hot water heater. They arrived on time, worked steadily, and finished before dinner time."

"My 1950's furnace gave out a few days after Christmas and a friend referred me to Carini. They came to give me a quote within a few days and, due to another job canceling, they were able to start on the work the very next day. I think it took two or three days to get me back up and running with heat. While they were at it, I had them add A/C to my old house so now I'm ready to stay comfortable in summer months too!

Using the sewer camera to inspect the inside of a customer's drains
Camera inspection through a sewer vent on a customer's roof
Hydro jet uses water at 4,000psi to clean the inside of the mainline drain which connects all the home's drains to the city's sewer system.
Using a snake we can go through the cleanouts on the side of the house.
With the cleanouts snaked, and the blockage located, we can send the hydro jet through the sewer vent and flush out the blocked drain.

Small jobs welcome

"CleanTech guided us through a complicated water heater problem - where both the manufacturer and the installer wanted to avoid resolving the issue. We thought our recently installed and badly leaking water heater had to be replaced, but Pablo from CleanTech fixed both manufactureing and installation problems saving us thousands of dollars. Karin from CleanTech watched over us and always had a plan b or c - a very comforting situation."

Water Heaters questions, answered by experts

It’s important to find the type of water heater that fits your needs and budget. Depending on the type of water heater, size, brand, and the type of energy you use to heat the water, costs range from a few hundred dollars to several thousand. Some of the most common types of water heaters include:

  • Electric: $600–3,500

  • Gas: $700–$2,700

  • Propane: $700–$2,500

  • High efficiency: $1,500–$3,000

  • Indirect: $1,200–$3,500

  • Hybrid heat pump: $1,200–$3,500

A well-maintained hot water recirculating pump can last 5 to 15 years. Pumps that run continuously may have a shorter lifespan than demand-controlled models. Hard water can reduce longevity by causing mineral buildup in the pump and pipes. Regular maintenance, such as cleaning or replacing filters, can extend the pump’s lifespan.

If your gas water heater is over 20 years old, it should be replaced. Gas water heaters can last up to 12 years and while they can exceed this expectancy if well-maintained, a heater that's 20 years old would require replacement. The heater is unlikely to run as efficiently as a new model and could be more expensive to do so.

Several signs indicate your water heater may be failing or in need of replacement. Key indicators include:

  • Age: A water heater older than ten years is approaching the end of its typical lifespan.

  • Water Quality: If you notice rusty or discolored water from your hot water faucets, or a foul odor similar to rotten eggs or sulfur, it can signal internal corrosion.

  • Unusual Noises: Banging, rumbling, or popping sounds from the tank often mean sediment has built up, causing the unit to overheat.

  • Leaks: Any water pooling around the base of the tank or visible leaks are clear signs of failure.

  • Performance Issues: A decline in performance, such as water not getting hot enough, taking longer to heat up, low water pressure, or decreased efficiency, suggests the unit is struggling.

  • Visible Damage: Obvious rust and corrosion on the exterior of the tank can indicate a more serious internal problem.

While these signs often point to replacement, some issues may be fixable. It's best to consult a professional plumber to diagnose the problem before investing in a new unit.

A larger heater requires a larger breaker—unless there’s one already installed. The longer answer to this question is more nuanced. Do you place demands on the heater at the same time as running other heavy-duty appliances like ovens and washing machines? Do you live in an older home that may not have considered the higher electrical demands we have now? Breakers need to be sized at 125% of the load. To find that load, you should call a local electrical pro.
