"Bob Kay did an excellent job from beginning to end on our kitchen and bathroom granite installation. He helped in everyway, advised us, and gave us a great price for all of the work. Also, Bob always responded right away whenever I called or texted him. He offers exceptional personal service and project coordination. We would not hesitate to hire him again. "The laminate installer was very professional and did a wonderful job. He even lowered the baseboards in the closet area and was very thorough. The laminate looks flawless. However, the vinyl tile contractor (different company) was not friendly, wouldn't make eye contact and did a substandard install. They left patches of missing grout and didn't lower any of the baseboards which left at least 3/4 inch gap between the baseboards and the new flooring. I asked for a different contractor to come back and fix the work of the tile installers which did happen within a couple of weeks. I wouldn't recommend only because it seems so hit or miss who they are going to send out to you."

"Truly outstanding quality of installation. Their experience and craftsmanship showed in all phases of work. The wood-look tile looked so good, we immediately doubled the size of the job to do the entire first floor. Quite pleased with the final results."

Backsplash Installation questions, answered by experts

Porcelain and ceramic tiles are made from clay, but porcelain tiles are fired in a kiln at a higher temperature. This makes them more durable, but it also means porcelain is more expensive than ceramic at $3 to $5 more per square foot.

Even with the higher price point, many people choose porcelain over ceramic because there are more color and design options.

The tile trim you use will depend on a few factors, including design preferences, budget, and whether the project is DIY or not. You might choose plastic trim if you want an easier DIY job that is more budget-friendly. There are also more color options available in plastic. On the other hand, you might choose metal to match your fixtures or for areas with heavy use.

When working on your bathroom floor tiling, you should always tile the floor first and then refit the toilet afterward. This has both practical and visual advantages—the tile will have a better seal, and the installation will look cleaner.

On the other hand, when you try to cut the tiles to fit around the toilet, you’re putting yourself at a disadvantage. It’s a lot more work, it’s hard to be precise, and mistakes or miscalculations can lead to future moisture damage to the tiling, grout, and subfloor.

Flooring transition strips can be secured to the subfloor using glue, nails, or screws. For a more secure installation, especially in high-traffic areas, using screws or nails is recommended as it reduces the risk of slippage. However, if aesthetic appeal is a priority, glue provides a cleaner, more seamless finish without any visible holes or screw heads.

When choosing tiles for a shower floor, avoid highly porous tile materials, like those with a water absorption rating over 7%. Don’t use non-vitreous tiles, or tiles fired at low temperatures, because they will absorb more water. If you use a highly porous tile in the shower, the tiles can wear down faster, meaning they’ll need to be replaced much sooner.
