Fair and Square is a remodeling company in located in Whitefish Bay, accredited with the Wisconsin Better Business Bureau. I have over 25 years experience and am able to manage and execute virtually all of your remodeling requests. From new windows, skylights and doors, residing and insulating your home, to full kitchen, bath and basement makeovers. Being the owner as well as the carpenter allows me to be fully involved in all aspects of your project from estimates to construction clean up and removing debris. Services the Greater Milwaukee area including Racine.

"We could not be happier with the work that Jason and the team at Fair & Square did at our home! As ours is an older house, built in the 1920's, the challenge was to add built in bookshelves and a mantel that would look like they were original to the house. To complicate things the previous owner had stained the hardwood floors with a custom stain. Fair and Square knocked it out of the park and would highly recommend for any custom work you may need."

We use the finest quality material available on the market today this includes Sherwin Williams, PPG /Glidden Quality Paints, and Benjamin Moore upon special request. Our painters are well trained craftsman that take their careers seriously.

"Absolutely wonderful experience working with Carl's Painting. We had worked with them in the past where they did a wonderful job painting our condo. We just purchased a new home and needed the paint updated in a few areas. Patrick Carl was very warm and welcoming, and he provided great advice and a fair price for the work done. We ended up needing a second coat on most of our house and he was very good about letting us know as soon as he realized it and repricing things very fairly to cover the extra materials and labor. The house looks amazing and everything was put back together nicely and neatly. I can't say enough about what a great job they did and how quickly and professionally they worked. I would absolutely hire them in the future and recommend them highly to anyone."

Building or remodeling your house is my priority. To do it right takes time to truly understand your wants, needs and lifestyle. There is no shortcut for making your home reflect you. My style is not “cookie-cutter.” Every project I oversee is done with pride and is customized to you – my client. I work with the best craftsmen available, meet deadlines and always offer up ways to make your home the best built in the neighborhood. I do this all while keeping a sharp eye on your budget. I build and remodel for you as if I were doing it for myself, so detail and quality are always on top-of-mind. I hope we have the chance to talk and meet in the near future.

"Steve was quick to respond and took care of all our needs."

Unfinished Carpentry questions, answered by experts

Cupping and bowing are both types of wood warping, but they affect the board in different ways. Cupping happens when the edges of a board curl upward or downward, creating a concave or convex shape across its width. Conversely, bowing is when the board curves along its length, forming a gentle arc.

When deciding whether to use nails or screws for framing, the specific needs of the project must be taken into account. Nails have long been the go-to option for framing due to their affordability, ease of installation, and ability to withstand shear forces. They are perfect for structural framing projects where fast assembly is essential. In contrast, screws offer exceptional holding power and are particularly useful in situations requiring increased strength and resistance to pull-out forces. For projects that prioritize accuracy and long-lasting quality, screws may be the preferred option, though nails remain a dependable and efficient choice.

Rotting wood, frame misalignment, or damaged seals often require attention.

The primary parts of a house that need framing during construction are floors, exterior walls, interior walls, and the roof. The framing in these areas provides the skeleton for adding other materials over the top. With walls, for example, contractors can hang drywall over the interior walls and siding over the outside of the exterior walls. Proper framing ensures a sturdy house that is built to last.

Regular sealing, repainting, and checking for wood rot or pest infestations help maintain longevity.
