I called Sequim Valley Electric at the suggestion of a friend.  I needed to have three dimmer switches installed that I had purchased myself. While making arrangements for an appointment I was treated in a very easy and friendly manner.  I made the appointment without asking for an estimate.  I knew that electricians were expensive, but being a simple job for a professional, assumed that they could do it within an hour.  The electricians arrived precisely on time, did the job in twenty minutes and left. They were very nice and I was completely satisfied with the work they performed.  I was told that the bill would be mailed to me.  When I received the bill I was a bit dismayed to find out it was $92.00 excluding tax.  They were literally in and out in twenty minutes.  There were two of them so it was forty minutes between them, but that still seemed high.  I called for an explanation of the bill and it was explained to me that there is a basic service call charge and hourly rates are applied for jobs that take hours to perform.  During the course of our conversation I was asked if I was a senior and was told that if I was over 55 the charge was $85.00 instead of $92.00.  I understand service call charges and the reasoning behind them, but $92.00 still seemed a bit excessive, so after I got off the phone I went onto Angie?s List and looked into electricians on the site.  I found several instances where people were charged anywhere from $50.00 to $75.00 for small jobs similar to what I had done, which indicates to me that $92.00, and even $85 for the senior charge which only applies to seniors, could be on the high end of a service call charge.  I can?t say for sure whether or not it is a fair price; I honestly don?t know.  Maybe it is perfectly fair and I am simply uninformed.  What I do know is that I felt it was on the high end and have learned to never forego Angie?s list again.  In the future I will let my fellow members and the service people?s estimates enlighten as to what is fair before having any work done.  Since becoming a member I have used Angie?s List many times and this is the first (and last) time I have contacted anybody for service without checking Angie?s List.  And to emphasize how well Angie?s List has served me in the past, this is the first time I will not be able to nominate the business for the Page of Happiness.  When asked if I would use this company again the only options given are yes or no. Since I believe that I would be able to have the work done for less money I felt that I had to choose no.  A more accurate response would be that I am unsure because I would not use them again without first contacting the A rated electricians on the list for estimates. Considering everything, I would say this is a good company, but the next time I need an electrician I will do more to make sure I am doing business with an excellent company.

"great! - would definitely use Christopher & Company again. We thought we had some wood rot, but when carpenter arrived, he found it was just stained, not rotted. He did find a section on top part of house that had some damage and replaced that for us. Work was done quickly, he was very tidy, complete and clean up was excellent. very professional!

Electrical questions, answered by experts

In Sequim, you can safely reset tripped breakers or replace standard outlets and switches if you turn off power at the panel and verify with a voltage tester. Always choose components rated for damp or coastal environments. Avoid working on outdoor wiring after rain or during high humidity. For any issues involving the main panel, aluminum wiring, or storm-related damage, contact a local professional familiar with Sequim’s climate.

Helpful?

As a new homeowner in Sequim, prioritize a professional electrical panel inspection to assess capacity for modern needs like EV charging or heat pumps. Upgrade to GFCI outlets in kitchens, bathrooms, garages, and outdoor spaces to address the area’s damp climate. Install whole-house surge protection to safeguard against power surges from winter storms, and replace any outdated smoke detectors with interconnected, hardwired units for improved safety.

Helpful?

In Sequim, a common mistake is starting electrical work without securing required permits, which can cause issues during resale or insurance claims. Homeowners may also overlook weatherproofing outdoor outlets and fixtures, risking moisture damage in the marine climate. Failing to plan for future upgrades like EV charging or heat pumps, or attempting complex work without understanding older grounding systems, can lead to safety hazards and code violations.

Helpful?

When hiring an electrician in Sequim, look for experience with older homes and knowledge of local permitting requirements. Ensure they understand the area’s marine climate and can weatherproof outdoor electrical work. Ask about their expertise with panel upgrades, surge protection, EV charger installation, and generator setups. Check for strong references from Sequim residents and confirm their availability during storm season for emergency electrical repairs.

Helpful?

Homes in Sequim built before 1980 often need electrical panel upgrades or rewiring, especially if you notice flickering lights, buzzing outlets, or frequent breaker trips during storms. Signs like aluminum wiring, rusted electrical components, or a lack of GFCI outlets indicate it’s time for improvements. If your home can’t support new appliances, heat pumps, or EV charging, consider a panel upgrade or additional circuits.
