"Stuart and his crew are awesome! I had some challenging painting issues including vaulted ceilings, some old faux finishing interior rooms that I wanted to paint over and some chair rails removed. The quality of Summit Painting's work was incredible and they finished it expediently and leave everything clean when they are done! George, the foreman, on the job was communicative and easy to work with. I will always hire them for future projects!"

Small jobs welcome

"They repaired a portion of our cedar deck and they did an outstanding job. They are true craftsmen and I'm exceptionally happy with their work. They came on time, cleaned up afterwards, and even did some extra things at no charge. I would definitely recommend them highly!"

"RFI built a second story deck for us. From tear down of the old structure to clean up of the site at end of the project, they were 1st class. The old deck was a true hazard and they were able to repair water damaged areas adjacent to the deck structure as well. Fred was great at offering various design options and happily answered all our questions. Without being prompted, he sent lots of pictures from start to finish, which really kept us informed since we were not on site. The deck and railing turned out beautiful. Would hire RFI again for future projects without hesitation."

"These guys are stellar. My deck was in disrepair and I was uncertain what to do with it - whether to totally knock it down and start anew, or to build on the existing foundation. Also what material to use - composite, wood, etc. They came out, looked at my deck, gave recommendations, and worked within my budget. We went with cedar, and within two weeks, I had an absolutely beautiful new deck, built on the existing foundation. I was very pleased with the whole interaction - they were courteous and professional, friendly and hard-working, arriving early and working through the day to get the job done. It was for me an exceedingly good experience with a contractor, and their work is solid. I was nervous as a first time home owner to hire a contractor, for fear of not knowing enough and being taken. I had spoken with several other general contractors and also specific deck builders prior to hiring Modern Exteriors, and each could have built a deck. One larger company offered a lower price but when they came out, the materials they suggested would have been sub-par and the deck would have been plastic-looking. These guys are a smaller business that build decks for a living, and are very good at it and clearly enjoy each project - like works of art. I highly recommend them."

"Very satisfied with the cleaning and staining of my wooden deck and the pressure washing of my aggregate patio, walkways & driveway. The deck work was done very well & completed in a timely manner. I would definitely recommend this company to others. The only somewhat negative I would say is that the job was a little more costly than I had budgeted."

Deck Cleaning questions, answered by experts

A deck doesn’t have to be perfectly level. Many pros even recommend a gentle slope to ensure proper drainage and increase longevity. The ideal gentle slope is about 1/8 to 1/4 inch per foot away from the property, leading water away from the home to prevent pooling and reduce the risk of damage. It also minimizes rot, mold, and other moisture-related problems.

Increases livable area and enhances aesthetic, often boosting property appeal.

In most cases, your deck will need some form of deck footing to hold it in place, preventing moisture from rotting your wood and decreasing your deck’s lifespan. Concrete deck blocks are the most common type of footing for floating decks. Some homeowners use ground-level deck footings. For added security, consider digging and laying your ground-level footings below ground.

In most cases, there should be a small gap between the house and the deck, usually no more than ½ to ¾ of an inch. This space allows water and moisture to flow through instead of pooling against the side of your house. It also lets flashing protect your siding from runoff, which is one of the most common issues with decks.

Deck skirting shouldn’t touch the ground, especially if you have a wood deck, which is vulnerable to moisture. Ideally, you should leave at least 3/4 of an inch of space between the deck skirting and the ground for more ventilation. Pros also recommend that you incorporate about 1 square foot of space for ventilation for the underside of the deck to every 150 square feet of decking. Proper ventilation prevents mold growth and rot that can damage your deck.
