We live in the beautiful Spokane Valley and enjoy all of the outdoor adventures found here. There’s so much to do like a day on the links at Painted Hills Golf Course. And don’t forget the great wineries. But we don’t like when the outdoor pests such as ants, wasps, rodents, or bed bugs decide to stroll into our house and make themselves at home. Fleas are leaps and bounds ahead of ticks when jumping from person to person. The average flea can cover 1.9 meters per second. It can also jump over 50 times its own height. Fleas rely solely on their magnificent leaps to jump hosts. While ticks can crawl relatively quickly, their strategy is usually to sit and wait for a victim to "hitchhike" in tall grass.

Squirrels hate anything that disturbs the peace in their nest. Loud noises, bright lights, and strong smells like cayenne pepper or mothballs will deter them from your attic. Spread these scents, add a strobe light, or use an ultrasonic repeller to keep squirrels from nesting in your attic.

Poisonous baits, like those used for getting rid of mice or rats, are a no-no for iguana traps. Using them for this purpose is illegal in most states, and the iguanas are unlikely to find them attractive. Plus, they can cause unnecessary suffering, and you risk harming a pet or other protected wildlife if they decide to nibble on it instead.

Look for goose repellents that contain the ingredient methyl anthranilate. This is a natural chemical found in grape juice. In human food, it’s often used as grape flavoring. With geese, it’s highly irritating. Grape Kool-Aid contains methyl anthranilate, the active ingredient in most bird repellents. It won’t harm geese, but it will deter them.

Certain smells do repel bats, though this isn’t a foolproof method. Try applying essential oil sprays like mint, eucalyptus, cinnamon, or peppermint to possible entry points and throughout the attic. Mix together two cups of warm water with a half cup of sugar and a few drops of your preferred essential oil. Put this mixture in a spray bottle and go to town.
