"Connor did a great job of matching the new fence with the existing fence. The quality of the work was exactly what I was looking for and he was able to give good practical advice on how to make parts of the project look their best. Im really glad I got to work with him as the other fencing companies that came and quoted were difficult to work with. Its simple, if you need a fence made, hire Craftsman Fence!"

"Sam replaced a large section of a 27 year old fence, two gates, and a rotting fence post. He also hauled away the old fencing. Sam completed the work very quickly and cleaned up everything before he left. I am very pleased with the new fence and gates! He delivered everything on time and just as he promised. I would definitely use Sam's Construction Club again!"

"OMG I love my new fence, they came when they said they would. They did the work, cleaned up all the mess and I am so excited to allow my large breed dog outside now. Not to worry if the kids next door will tease or bother me or my dog again. 6 feet high and privacy slates is the way to go, I am bragging to everyone I know, LOVE LOVE LOVE my fence and the price was prefect. Thank you, Duke for doing such a wonderful job. I will call you again if I need to upgrade my chainlink."

Fencing questions, answered by experts

The most affordable metal fence type is wire at just $3 to $5 per linear foot. Wire fences come in a variety of styles and do a good job of marking perimeters and keeping animals in or out of certain areas. While they’re very easy to install and repair, many homeowners find them unattractive, and many homeowners associations won’t allow them.

When it comes to materials, wire fences are the cheapest option. The average cost for a 150-foot wire fence is $1,350. The next cheapest material is chain-link, followed by wood.

As far as the style of fence, smaller, less private fences are cheaper than large, elaborate fences that block your whole yard. That’s why split-rail fences are the cheapest option for wooden fences. They cost roughly $10 to $30 per linear foot.

When choosing wood for a fence, consider your budget and geographic region. The most popular and common types of wood are cedar, redwood, and pressure-treated pine. Cedar is a top choice due to its natural durability, resistance to rot and insects, and budget-friendly price. Redwood is another durable, tried-and-true option, though it is typically more expensive. Pressure-treated wood, such as pine, is also a widely used and popular alternative. These materials are readily available at most hardware stores, which makes future repairs and replacements easier. Their accessibility and long-lasting performance make them excellent choices for most fence installation projects.

You can sometimes install a fence over a gas line. Fence installation typically requires a two-foot depth for posts, so if the lines are shallower than two feet, you cannot put a fence post over the line. You’ll need to call 811 to get the gas lines located and marked before you start the project.

A horizontal fence is typically more expensive to build than a vertical fence, often costing between 10% and 20% more. The higher cost is due to the need for a higher grade of lumber and more posts to prevent the boards from sagging, which increases both material and labor expenses. Despite the higher price, horizontal fences tend to be more durable and offer a more distinct, modern look compared to the more common vertical picket style. However, they may not be the best option for privacy, as there can be slight gaps between the horizontal rails.
