"I had my kitchen and hallway tiled after a plumbing disaster. James performed my initial consult and estimate. He was incredibly thorough and very knowledgeable. After the initial appointment, I knew I made the right call hiring this company. Michael performed the install. I can't be more pleased with how the project turned out! I am in love with my kitchen again. The placement of each tile is clean; you can tell a lot of attention to detail was involved with the install. Thank you, Patriot Flooring, for getting me to love my kitchen again!"

"Sowinski Tile and Marble is an excellent small business. Ben was always cordial and customer satisfaction oriented. His work is truly craftsman quality, and he keeps the customer well-informed at all times. He is on the job when he says, indicates what is to be accomplished, and takes pains to do everything to the customer's satisfaction. His prices are very competitive, he adheres to the project timeline, and his clean-up is excellent. I highly recommend Sowinski Tile and Marble."

"Excellent installation team from the Northern Neck. Couldn't be happier with the results- especially the vinyl tile. Looks like ceramic but also looks indestructible!"

"We had our master bath completely demolished and rebuilt. We were very nervous because we’d never taken on a project like this, but we purchased a 30 year old home knowing we’d have to. We got 2 separate estimates that came in almost identical in price, so we were comfortable we were well within the industry standard for this type of work. The plan was laid out for us and carried out exactly as promised. Everything was handled professionally and we’re extremely pleased with the quality of the work. If we were ever in a situation to require this type of work again in the future, there wouldn’t be 2 estimates because we wouldn’t bother calling anyone else. We would be totally comfortable recommending this contractor to anyone, and would not hesitate to rehire this contractor again ourselves. This was our first experience with a bathroom remodel and it couldn’t have gone any better. We’re thrilled with the outcome."

"After a consultation with Kenny on the work I needed done, I hired VA Brick Doctor. Kenny repointed steps on the front and back porch, and repaired couple areas on porch where tiles were cracked and loose. Due to rainy weather I had to wait a few weeks before he could start but the wait was worth it. Kenny and his assistant arrived early and worked in hot, humid conditions. Kenny is easy to work with, meticulous, and knows his trade. I was very pleased with his work. It has been a year since the work was done and everything looks great."

Ceramic Tile questions, answered by experts

The best bathroom floor tiles are strong enough to withstand the weight of a clawfoot tub. However, professional tile installation is essential. If the tiles are uneven or improperly fixed, they may crack under the pressure. Be careful when installing the tub—if it drops or drags on the tiles, it could easily cause scratches or cracks.

Tiling can be DIY with the right tools and skills, but challenges like ensuring evenness and appropriate adhesion often warrant professional handling.

Yes, but you’ll have to use some other type of tool to avoid damaging the tile and possibly injuring yourself. Some alternatives to tile cutters include a glass cutter, angle grinder, and wet saw. Depending on the tile material, you might simply be able to measure and score it with something sharp, like a carbide-tipped pencil, and break it off. Be sure to sand the edge for a smooth installation.

Installing kitchen countertop tiles on a mold and moisture-resistant cement backer board is one of the best options. When fitted correctly on top of a plywood base, it’s stable and long-lasting. Old-fashioned cement board is economical, cuts neatly and easily with a circular or jigsaw, and screws into plywood without any difficulty.

Add a T-shaped spacer to each corner of a tile when placing it. You’ll want to nudge the tiles closer together so the spacers are touching each corner. When you’re done installing your tile, you can remove each spacer, wash them, and use them for your next project.
