"I had tiles that had come loose due to improper installation (by someone else). William remove that tile and hardy board to clean up the bad installation. He put down a new membrane and tile. He even found a new tile that matched the old ones. Great job!"

"Getting a quote and scheduling was a breeze. And Ivan and Alex were on time, careful and pleasant to be around. They answered our questions and made good suggestions. And their workmanship was exceptional. Our herringbone backsplash was not easy to do, but it’s been done perfectly. They left everything sparkling clean, too. Can’t say enough good to recommend these folks."

"There is a reason this company has such stellar reviews! Their workmanship is above par. We were extremely happy with the results. Our tub and tiles look brand new. Nice, clean, and shiny! The man who did our tub and tiles, was so nice and worked so hard. He arrived on time and got right to work. This man is an asset to your company and I hope these words are passed on to him. And I called Specialized Refinishing several times and had a question for the owner, Will. Every time I called, he was so nice and patient and answered all my questions. Their prices are extremely reasonable too! Great workmanship, super hard worker, wonderful price and an owner, you can actually call, ask for, and talk to! I highly recommend this company. "It was a great experience. Will is thorough and works to make sure the job is done right. The job took a little longer to complete than planned (5 days instead of 3), but that was because the flooring was taking longer to dry than is typical and Will did not want to rush through the process and risk the tile becoming mis-aligned. He was very flexible to work with and accommodated our full-time work schedules, doing the job mostly over a weekend."

"This was a great experience from the initial contact to the moment they walked out the door when the job was complete. I would definitely hire Shalom home Solutions again. They were very responsive, punctual, professional and their work was detail oriented. They covered everything and cleaned up after the work was complete. The deal was very generous as far as the cost was concerned. Thank you for a drama free experience."

Backsplash Installation questions, answered by experts

Yes, but you should only put tile directly on drywall in smaller areas that don’t experience excess moisture. For example, a small kitchen tile backsplash could work, but installing tile directly on the drywall in a bathroom or other chronically damp area is not a good idea. Either way, a cement backer board is a far more reliable solution, as drywall is susceptible to moisture and can warp or cause your tiles to crack.

Yes, it’s possible to cut tile without a wet saw; instead, you can use an angle grinder, a glass cutter, a snap cutter, tile nippers, or a rotary tool with a tile-cutting blade. A manual tile cutter or snap cutter works well for the larger tiles that wet saws are typically used for, while smaller projects might just require nippers or a glass cutting wheel. If you’re working with large quantities of tile, however, power tools are best.

Generally speaking, it is better to cut tile wet when using a fast-moving wet saw to reduce dust and chipping. However, tile can be cut dry when using just about any cutting tool. Dry cutting will result in a bigger mess and may increase the risk of chipping or cracking, but if you’re just making small cuts, dry cutting is a safe and viable option. Cutting dry also means you can apply tile grout sooner, so it’s better for rushed projects.

Yes, you can tile over existing shower tiles, but it's better to remove the old tiles first for the best results. Tiling over existing tiles requires a clean, level surface and proper adhesion. If the old tiles are in good condition, you can roughen the surface to improve adhesion. However, removing the old tiles ensures a smoother, longer-lasting finish and prevents potential issues down the line.

The tile spacing you should use will depend on the tile and where you’re installing it. Choosing the right tile spacers to maintain a consistent gap between your tiles is tricky. Generally, tile spacing shouldn’t be less than 2 millimeters on walls and 3 millimeters on floors because of stress relief requirements. Getting it wrong can result in uneven tiles and early repairs.
