"Getting a quote and scheduling was a breeze. And Ivan and Alex were on time, careful and pleasant to be around. They answered our questions and made good suggestions. And their workmanship was exceptional. Our herringbone backsplash was not easy to do, but it’s been done perfectly. They left everything sparkling clean, too. Can’t say enough good to recommend these folks."

"Paul Bender and his team do incredible work. Paul helped us remodel a number of bathrooms, from flooring, to decorative tile, new plumbing and lighting. Paul worked with us every step of the way. He was incredibly responsive, attentive to details, and oriented to ensure homeowners receive the best outcomes for their projects. All installers are professionals, arriving on time and cleaning workspaces each day, and communicate regularly with homeowners on status and plans. They are excellent crafts people and really excel at everything, but especially tile installation. The are real artists that pull together a plan that takes into consideration the nuances of your unique spaces. Paul offers creative ideas based on his years of experience. He has wonderful cabinet solutions that are stylish and made very well. His prices are fair and his customer service is outstanding. I would highly recommend Paul and the Tile Artisan for your bath or kitchen remodel."

"The drywall work patching was done for the dining wall ceiling which was damaged by leaky pipe of the 2nd floor bathroom. The handyman showed up on time and patched the ceiling to satisfaction. The bill amount was exactly as quoted. I used the service again for a new sump pump installation. I found communication with Tracy was easy and dependable. She was on top of everything. I discussed the ways the job could be done and the schedule that worked for me. She helped me find the best method for my need and sent out the crew at the agreed time. My questions were answered promptly. She has good understanding of her crew’s capabilities and asked for their performances afterwards for future reference. The work was completed with my active involvement. The crew and I discussed the major steps. They were flexible and understanding."

"Alexander was referred to me by one of my friends in the Army. The military moved my family across the country to Chevy Chase, MD. We bought a house site unseen, and showed up to discover the home was a total disaster. My wife was in tears. The hardwood floors were so bad that I thought they would need to be replaced. After consulting with Alexander, he assured me that they could be brought back to life. He also encouraged me to shop around. After doing a little research, I quickly realized that Alexander and his team were the most knowledgeable and affordable. Alexander made it a point to match any competing bids to keep me as a customer. Through the whole process it was evident that Cupboards Kitchen & Bath Discounters was passionate about their work. Alexander was always available to answer any questions that I had, and rolled over backwards to make sure I was completely satisfied. After the floors were completed, I noticed that one of the stairs was damaged from the previous owner’s dog. Alexander offered to come fix it for me free of charge. The floors turned out amazing! I could not believe the transformation. They now look brand new. My wife and I felt like we made a new friend with Alexander during our floor rehab. I would recommend him to anyone. Next up…. Backsplash Installation questions, answered by experts

When working on your bathroom floor tiling, you should always tile the floor first and then refit the toilet afterward. This has both practical and visual advantages—the tile will have a better seal, and the installation will look cleaner.

On the other hand, when you try to cut the tiles to fit around the toilet, you’re putting yourself at a disadvantage. It’s a lot more work, it’s hard to be precise, and mistakes or miscalculations can lead to future moisture damage to the tiling, grout, and subfloor.

Yes, it’s always a good idea to keep a box or two of spare tiles after a home renovation project. Tiles can crack from improper installation, heavy foot traffic, and impact from drops. Having some extra tile on hand can make replacement fast, easy, and affordable. Plus, some manufacturers might discontinue particular colors or styles, and slight variations in tile colors between batches could mean mismatched tiles even if your product isn’t discontinued. Having a few spare tiles in storage can help avoid these issues, as well.

Tile—specifically smaller, mosaic-style tiles—is the best type of flooring for building a walk-in shower base. Shower pans come with a threshold and sidewalls to contain the water, but tile can be set into the shower base. This creates a walk-in shower floor that gently slopes toward the drain to keep water from getting out and into the rest of the bathroom.

Yes, but you’ll have to use some other type of tool to avoid damaging the tile and possibly injuring yourself. Some alternatives to tile cutters include a glass cutter, angle grinder, and wet saw. Depending on the tile material, you might simply be able to measure and score it with something sharp, like a carbide-tipped pencil, and break it off. Be sure to sand the edge for a smooth installation.

No, you don’t technically need a cement backer board for a wall tiling project, but not using it risks disastrous moisture damage. Cement is naturally water-resistant, whereas drywall soaks it in, which can lead to warping or mold growth. Always use a backer board treated with a waterproof membrane for bathrooms and other chronically damp areas to ensure complete tile shower waterproofing.
