Customers say: Quality work

"Nelson and his crew were very professional- polite-outstanding at their job. Their work was meticulous. They arrived on time and the clean up superb. It was as if the were working on their own home. They also worked around my dog (Milo loved them).I have more projects that they are going to do for me. THEY ARE MY NEW GO TO FOR ALL FUTURE JOBS. The drywall-painting 3 rooms-new flooring looks fantastic. I could not be happier. I will recommend them to all my family and friends. My house has never looked so good. Also, upon Nelsons first visit, he removed his shoes--I WAS SOLD"

"Kevin is very thorough, honest, and professional. My experience was smooth and the quality of work perfect. I had missing drywall areas to fill in, numerous nail and screw holes patched, and repairing previous poor drywall fixes. They even matched the swirls on the walls repaired. I m VERY pleased and ready to move on to painting. I highly recommend The Patch Boys. You will be pleased."

"I bought a Condo as is, it was in need of a lot of work. Antonio and Manuel did an amazing job. Painting, patching and plastering. The second bathroom ceiling was a disaster and when they were done, the entire place looked brand new. I recommend them highly. Excellent work, five stars"

Drywall questions, answered by experts

Which style of corner bead you choose—whether metal or paper-faced—depends on your preference and if you’re comfortable using metal-cutting tools and a hammer. Metal bead offers superior strength and durability but its installation is slightly more involved. We’d say for most cases, it’s better to use metal bead but if you’re not comfortable working with metal, paper-faced bead will work just fine.

Only use spackle on plaster walls when the imperfection is small. It’s best used for nail holes or small dings in the plaster. Spackle dries quickly, allowing you to continue the repair process shortly after using it. Plaster can be tricky to repair, though, so if you run into issues, call a pro so that you don’t risk further damage.

While you can put new drywall over old drywall, it’s not always the best option. In some cases, drywalling over drywall can make it harder to find wires and pipes behind your walls and conceal more serious problems with your walls. It can also make the room smaller. On the plus side, putting drywall over drywall can improve soundproofing and insulation. Plus, it’s often less expensive than tearing down and adding new drywall.

If you already have plaster walls and ceilings, adding new plaster costs $2 to $10 per square foot. For an average-sized room, that would come out to $1,200 to $10,000. However, the cost to replace plaster with drywall is higher—running between $720 and $1,250 for a 10-by-8-foot wall or ceiling (not including drywall finishing).

The age of your home can clue you in to whether you have plaster or drywall ceilings. Homes built after the ‘70s are more likely to have drywall ceilings and walls, while older homes have plaster. You can also do the pushpin test: A pushpin will go into drywall, whereas it’s much harder to push one into a plaster wall. If you’re still unsure, ask a drywall professional to let you know which type of ceilings and walls you have.
