"Bernie has done several projects at our home and has done a fantastic job on each one. He has installed a storm door, replaced a sink drain, built a gate for our front porch, installed, flooring in our attic, and even repaired a joist in our crawlspace. "I highly recommend E&D Plastering. I had a very large hole (~30"x42") in my hallway ceiling, another very large hole in a closet ceiling from removing an old air handler, and a huge sagging area in my son's bedroom ceiling. Eddie repaired all the holes, including some areas in the closet wall that were just missing drywall. He cut out all the sagging areas of ceiling. He repaired everything and finished it all so that it matches the existing textures. He was careful to cover the walk through the house and all the furniture in my son's room with paper and plastic. He swept up and mopped when the job was done. His price was more than fair. His communication about the job was excellent. He came when he said he would. I will definitely hire him again in the future."

Drywall questions, answered by experts

Yes, drywall nail pops are a common occurrence in homes, both new and old, resulting from the settling and shifting of the structure over time. Though not present in every room or on every wall, encountering nail pops in different sections of a home is not unusual, particularly if the temperature, humidity, or foundation has experienced changes.

In most cases, plaster repair will improve your home’s energy efficiency because a solid barrier of the insulative material helps keep conditioned air inside your home. Major plaster repair jobs like repairing large cracks or crumbling sections of plaster or applying a skim coat might make a noticeable difference in your heating and cooling bills. Not only can plaster repairs improve efficiency, but they can also reduce strain on your HVAC equipment, potentially saving you money on maintenance and repairs.

In framing, studs are placed at 16-inch intervals to coincide with the typical spacing of wall materials such as drywall or plywood. This spacing is called "on-center" and is necessary for maintaining structural stability and efficient use of materials. The 16-inch spacing also helps to distribute the weight evenly across the building's structure. For those looking to cut material costs and improve energy efficiency, 24-inch stud spacing can be employed through a method called "advanced framing". This requires careful planning and adherence to local building codes to ensure structural integrity.

Yes, you can hammer a nail into a wall stud. But before you do, it’s important to confirm that you’re actually nailing into a stud—and not wiring, pipes, or ductwork. To check, find a few more studs in the wall, then measure to make sure they’re either 16 or 24 inches apart.

It’s always better to follow proven drywall repair tips and fix the seams that look bad. However, if you simply want to make them less noticeable until you have time to fix them, you can use paint. A darker color of paint makes bad drywall tape seams less noticeable than light-colored paint. Matte paint hides bad seams better than glossy paint does, too.
