"The service and cost were as represented. Depending on what you need done it may be expensive because they charge an appointment fee plus an hourly rate. It is probably pretty standard but not cheap for unspecialized work. One thing I was not entirely happy with: on the phone I told the appointment person that I needed the pipes capped. Perhaps I was not clear but after demolition the Mr Handyman rep told me I will need a licensed plumber to put the pipes in the wall. I thought the whole thing would get done in one appointment. Otherwise he was very resourceful, expeditious and took care of everything to my satisfaction."

Plumbing questions, answered by experts

We highly recommend leaving the work of replacing drain pipes to a professional plumber. Drain pipes are a key part of your plumbing system, and making mistakes during the installation or even using the wrong size pipes for your specific fixture can lead to an elevated risk of leaks and clogs. Additionally, drain pipes prevent harmful sewer gas from entering your home, so hiring a professional plumber is essential to keeping the risk of leaks and clogs low and avoid reducing your indoor air quality.

You should check water pressure twice a year to ensure there aren’t any irregularities and that it isn’t too high. It’s also smart to check it any time you notice symptoms of high water pressure (like banging pipes, inconsistent water flow, and leaky fixtures). Similarly, if you live in an area that’s prone to water pressure fluctuations due to municipal supply changes, elevation, or seasonal temperature shifts, check it more frequently. You can buy an affordable water pressure gauge and check the water pressure yourself.

The time it takes to fix a leaking pipe is determined by the location of the leak, the extent of the damage, and the experience level of the person completing this task. Leaks from exposed pipes should only take an hour or so, but that can increase to several hours if a significant section of pipe needs to be replaced. Pipes in walls or ceilings will take two to six hours, while complex underground pipe repairs can take multiple days.

The most common places for water leaks in a home are the fixtures we use most often: the kitchen and bathroom sinks, the showerhead, and the toilet. These components all contain moving parts and O-rings that prevent water from flowing through when the fixtures are shut off, and these can wear down over time and lead to minor drips or significant leaks. You can sometimes employ a DIY solution to replace aerators or faucet O-rings that could be causing the leak, but it’s usually best to call in a professional for a permanent fix.

Polyvinyl chloride, or PVC, pipes are considered one of the best pipe types for drains and vent lines due to their low price point, lightweight material, corrosion resistance, and installation ease. But copper has long been considered the best piping option due to its durability. For many homeowners, though, the price of copper can be cost-prohibitive.
