Being a new homeowner in DC, I knew my property was in a historic district and informed potential landscapers. Tamara assured me the proposed landscape work did not need permitting since we were not laying concrete. However, we received a stop work order shortly after the project started. It turned out my entire yard was public space and we needed to get permits for all of the work. Tamara tried to work with DCRA and the historic board, but didn't get very far and suggested we abandon significant parts of the project. I ended up having to do the majority of the legwork - getting signatures from neighbors for approval, presenting to the ANC council to gain support for the design, and finally secured approval for a design that was very close to what we originally wanted after 5 months. Tamara's touted experience with historic neighborhoods was one of the main reasons why I hired her, but in the end she provided little understanding of regulation and offered almost no guidance navigating the entire process. The issues did not end after securing the work permits. The slope of the small 9' x 12' patio installed in the side yard was too steep. It took many conversations with Tamara - from showing her the measured slope to even placing chairs on the patio - for her to finally concede that it was indeed too steep and send her sub back out to fix it. They improved it only slightly and the patio is still not graded correctly. Not only can you feel the slope when sitting on furniture, there is a visible slant to any liquid placed on top of the patio table. Finally, all of the ten rose bushes HGD put in started to grow strangely at the same time shortly after they were planted. Tamara did not respond to my first email asking her if there was something wrong with the roses. After my landscaper confirmed it was rose rosette, I tried contacting Tamara to see if there was any remedy. She confirmed the roses were in fact diseased, but it was not her fault since other roses she planted from the same nursery were fine and it must of come from other diseased roses in the neighborhood. Now, I run in my neighborhood regularly and I'm constantly on the lookout for diseased knockout roses to let their owners know, but have yet to find any. The roses were also planted on different sides of the house and all showed symptoms at the same time. This isn't definitive proof, but like any other issue that came up during the project, Tamara would not concede any culpability whatsoever. When I told her I was not happy with her service, her response was: "Thanks for you email. I'm sorry that you're disappointed. I felt that I made every effort to go over and above given the complexities of your project. Good luck in your next project." I would've been happy if she just offered to take the diseased roses out, or offered a small credit for additional service (which she knew were in my plans)... basically, I would've been satisfied with anything at all. I'm usually a laid back client with an expectation for good work. I didn't make much of a fuss having to spend 5 months of my time to secure the necessary permits, but grading a patio correctly and standing behind your plants? Apparently that's too complicated. Tamara obviously doesn't care about you as a client and wants to get out of a project as soon as it's done.

So we expected to see the tree start to revive. Instead, we lost even more sections of the tree. By May, I contacted Sav-A-Tree again and said that there was no need for further treatments as the tree was dying. At that time I was told that they would cancel any further work (which they did) and not charge the remainder of the contract and would come and remove the tree for us when they were back in the neighborhood. So I called and asked when they would be around and was told they didn't know exactly. Then, one of my neighbors (2-doors away) had them come trim one of her trees in late June. I thought maybe they'd remove the crape myrtle tree at that time since they were two doors away. But they didn't. So I contacted the manager again and have not received any response to date. We're going to have a pink dogwood planted in this area in the autumn. So I'll have the nursery from which I purchased the dogwood remove the crape myrtle from our yard. Very disappointing, though. So I guess I won't be using Sav-A-Tree in the future. Anytime seems to look good as if the plant taking or something seems to be going skew, we could call them and they would say not to worry about that because that always happens after the first 6 months or they will come and take it out and they would do it immediately in a very personal way. When they came, they were very careful about all of our plantings. They are our number 1 go to nursery for this area. We thought their price was high but then we were shocked that they gave us so much credit when anything didn’t turn out for us. So we kept getting things for free. We walked through the basement underneath the first-floor half bath and looked at the plumbing situation (as well as some potential brick work in the basement itself). Then on to the upstairs existing full bath, and then the potential new full master bath. He provided rough cost ideas for what we wanted to do. Merrick Design has a great process where you do this step, then meet with a professional designer and have plans drawn up. At that point, Merrick works to get exact costs from subcontractors as the process moves forward. Very well thought out process. "Stay away from HomePros General Contracting, which also does business as HomeStory Doors. I paid in full for 2 sets of closet doors in August and was told the doors would arrive in 6-8 weeks. It has been more than 10 weeks and I don’t have new closet doors. I have called dozens of times and sent several emails but haven’t received a response."

"After literally years of research, I decided to see how Capitol Sheds would do on the shed that I've wanted since moving into this house in 2014. I got information from them by e-mail, and visited their lot in Woodbridge in person to see the various building materials, was able to get detailed price sheets, and they were very patient with me as I considered various options and made my decision. Delivery was painless, and despite my skepticism, they managed to save me money on the delivery by not using the shed mover. I realized it wasn't quite perfectly placed and the ramp was damaged after they left; they quickly came out, replaced the ramp, and releveled the shed at no charge. It's been almost a year now, and I'm very happy with the shed."

FAQs for greenhouse and nursery service projects in Broadlands, VA
Buying plants from a nursery is one thing, but ensuring that they are properly planted is another. While you might not need to hire a landscaper for every plant that you buy from a nursery, it’s a great idea to have their expertise and experience to plant larger items, like burlapped trees or specialty plants like rose bushes. Even better, before making a trip to a nursery to buy new plants, consult a local landscaper to test your soil for pH levels, soil texture, and phosphorus and potassium levels to help determine the best plants for your area.
Garden nurseries offer many plants to make your home and garden flourish. In-container plants are one option, including perennials, annuals, and small shrubs or trees. Large hedge plants and roses are called bare-root plants, meaning they have not been potted. Finally, you will see some burlapped plants, typically larger trees and shrubs with burlap wrapping around the bottom.
The best time to plant is between spring and autumn. Springtime weather is typically mild and is when nurseries start to bloom. When the summer weather arrives and it’s hot out, it’s best to avoid planting bare-root plants, but you can still plant many in-container varieties. The first sign of fall is another great opportunity to plant biennials if you live in southern states, or a lovely vegetable garden up north.
If you’re hiring a landscaper to plant the garden of your dreams, you do not need to provide them with plants that you bought yourself from a nursery. While you certainly can provide your landscaper with plants, keep in mind that some nurseries provide discounts to landscaping companies, therefore potentially lowering your materials cost. Beyond the cost of the plants themselves, you need to have additional materials like topsoil and mulch for the project. Most likely, your landscaper can get a discount on these materials as well, so it’s worth speaking with them before making any large purchases.
While there are over 400,000 different flowering plants worldwide, there are five main types of flowers. These flower types are based on their lifecycles, giving each type a unique personality. These types are:
Annuals, which complete their entire life cycle within a single growing season.
Perennials, which the tops die off in the winter but regrow in spring.
Biennials, which complete their entire life cycle within two years.
Hybrids, which exhibit either annual or perennial behaviors depending on location
Flowering shrubs, which are small to medium-sized perennial woody plants, such as shrubs or evergreens.
