"I have never been happier with a landscaping company. Straight A's are well-deserved. Fast, on-time, on budget, with impeccable workmanship. Our lawn and landscape have never looked so good - and they are a pleasure to work with. First time looking on Angie's List and it was a win. Highly recommended."

"David was very fast to respond to me request and stopped by within 20 minutes. David gave me a great price and his team did a great job taking down our large tree. I added a few bushes to be removed while they were cutting down the big tree and David and his crew did it the same day. They cleaned up my yard and you never knew anyone had been there. I will use Benitez Landscaping and design fir all my out door needs."

"I have never done a project like the patio they did and I could not be happier with the process, and the work Mike and his team did. He helped my wife and I scope out the project and listened to what we wanted and how we wanted to use the space. His suggestions were thoughtful and the end product turned out just as we had envisioned. There was no pressure during the process and he took all the time we needed to answer questions. His crew worked incredibly hard every day they were here, and you could tell they took pride in their work, focused on little details I couldn’t even envision, and had fun while doing it. This definitely showed in the end product as it looks great and I am extremely happy with the quality."

"Mottern Masonry Design replaced my retaining wall by the basement steps that had cracked over the years. Jeff Mottern came out and gave me a fair estimate and took the time to explain the process and answer my questions. His crew came out at the scheduled time and got the job done professionally in the promised time. My experience with Guy at the front desk was pleasant and he also answered any issues or questions that I had. I highly recommend this company and will definitely consider using them again for other types of work in the yard."

"Recently, Atlas General contractors completed our outdoor lighting in our front yard. They installed 50+ lights including illuminating house exterior, path lights and highlighting garden/tree illumination. We compared 3 quotes and they were best value for the money. They completed the job in 3 days, including all the clean up. They were very professional and continued to offer daily updates on project milestone. I would really recommend them."

Landscaping questions, answered by experts

You can fill the holes weeds leave behind with soil or sand to avoid unsightly spots or tripping hazards. If you remove weeds from a grassy area, fill the hole with soil and grass seed, and water regularly to promote grass growth.

Don’t worry if there’s a gap between cutting and planting an ideal branch. You can still cut the perfect branch when you see it. If you can’t get it in a pot or water right away, put it in a zip-top bag in the refrigerator. When you’re ready to finish the process, make a fresh cut.

Consulting your local university extension, Audubon society, or municipal urban forestry program are all good ideas when choosing a tree to plant. You can also ask an arborist or a knowledgeable landscaping company for advice on good trees to plant.

Many people have used old tires in gardens as raised beds, planters, tree rings, and DIY decor. However, these uses are not recommended due to the toxicity of many of the chemicals used to manufacture tires. These chemicals can leach into the soil and water as the tire breaks down, creating environmental pollution and health hazards for gardeners and their families.

Unless it only rains once in a blue moon where you live, you’re going to want water-loving plants in your garden bed or pot. A few ideas for plants that aren’t super fast-growing (meaning they’re good in pots or near foundations) and can handle a lot of standing water include:

  • Acorus (Sweet flag)

  • Colocasia esculenta (Taro or elephant ear): In many climates, these are annuals, making them less desirable because you need to adjust the chain again after each replant.

  • Equisetum scirpoides (Dwarf horsetail rush): non-dwarf varieties of horsetail are fast growers and can take over quickly.

  • Juncus effusus (Curly rush)

  • Osmunda regalis (Royal fern): Royal fern can grow quickly but can also handle being crowded, making them good container plants.
