"I requested that Capital Locksmith rekey the lock on my entry door. Prior to agreeing to perform the rekeying service the locksmith requested that I text him a picture of my existing key so he could determine if rekeying the lock was possible. The locksmith determined that rekeying my lock could be done. I was able to quickly make an appointment for the service. The locksmith arrived on time and quickly rekeyed the lock. I had requested 5 keys and he fulfilled my request. The cost for the service was very reasonable. I am very satisfied with the services of Capital Locksmith"

"I could not be happier with my experience this past Saturday with Raanan the Locksmith (and his wife Hanna). My husband and I had just arrived at our hotel, and somehow managed to lock our car keys inside the car while unloading it in the hotel garage. We were preparing for a long evening searching for a locksmith that could commit to helping us the same day. I received several texts and phone calls in reference to our need to hire a locksmith but chose to hire Raanan after my initial conversation with his wife. She seemed genuinely interested in helping us with our dilemma. My phone calls and texts re-confirming that they were actually coming to unlock the car, were answered promptly and we were kept informed about their arrival time. Raanan and his wife were professional and very pleasant to work with. Our car was unlocked quickly, and we still had time to keep our dinner reservation. We highly recommend Raanan the Locksmith for anyone needing help unlocking their car!"

"Nice kid. Not sure that he’s a true locksmith but he is learning!! He left all of his mess from drilling holes in my door. That’s why I called him a nice kid. The work seems to be fine but he showed up in a random unmarked car, didn’t appear neat or professional. I think he will figure it out. He has the skills."

"MDHC is the best. I had many contractors come by for a unique issue that we had but no one seemed to be able to fix it, and when they did it was with ridiculous plans and pricing. I finally reached out to MDHC and they were able to get out there, next day, to take a look. They came back the day after to get the work done. The entire experience was quick & easy, with the end cost being literally 16% of what i was quoted from other contractors. I can't say enough good things!"

Locksmiths questions, answered by experts

The best type of deadbolt depends on your specific needs. If accessibility is your primary concern, a single-cylinder deadbolt is the easiest to operate. Mortise locks are likely the most secure type of deadbolt you can install, but single-cylinders combined with secondary locking mechanisms like vertical locks are also a great option. Smart locks will give you the most flexibility to open and close your locks whenever and wherever you need to.

Yes, with better technology now available, it’s possible to add a smart lock on your sliding glass door. Smart locks can be easy for almost everyone in the family to operate and can connect to other safety features in the home, like smart lights. Plus, they’re harder for would-be criminals to pick. However, keep in mind that smart locks can potentially be hacked, and some completely rely on phones or Wi-Fi, which can be an issue if the power goes out.

A deadbolt differs from a regular lock in its design, construction, and security level. Regular locks are typically used for interior doors, such as for bedrooms and bathrooms, and provide minimal security. They are easy to install and use, often featuring a simple locking mechanism on the inside. In contrast, a deadbolt is one of the most secure locks you can install on an exterior door. Its internal construction is designed to withstand significant force, adding a crucial layer of security that can deter intruders. While deadbolts may be more expensive and complicated to install, they are cost-effective for the security they provide and are built to hold up to wear and tear.

Rekeying a lock changes the internal mechanism so that a new key works, while replacing a lock involves swapping out the entire hardware. Rekeying is a good, cost-effective option when you want to ensure old keys no longer work, such as after moving into a new home or losing a key. It's also ideal if you want to keep your existing lock hardware. You should opt to replace the locks entirely if you want to upgrade to a more secure or different style of lock, if the current lock is old or damaged, after a break-in, or if too many copies of the old key exist.

Rekeying is typically cheaper than replacing locks. Professional rekeying costs between $40 and $160, sometimes with an additional fee of $15 to $40 per lock. A locksmith's hourly rate averages around $75. If you do it yourself, a rekeying kit can cost as little as $10. In contrast, replacing a lock costs between $130 and $500, with an average of around $315, depending on the hardware and lock type. Rekeying is a simpler process that changes the key for your existing lock without replacing the hardware. It is a good option if you have a quality lock that works well, you've recently moved, you've lost a key, or you need a quick security upgrade. The best choice depends on the condition of your current locks.
