Frozen well pipes make themselves known quickly, as your faucets slow down to a trickle or shut down completely. For the most part, choosing between 30/50 psi and 40/60 psi is based on your water-pressure preference. However, it can also depend a little bit on your house—if you have older plumbing, a lower water pressure can be easier on the pipes (and a bit more gentle on your well pump). 

The lower 30/50 pressure is usually enough for a single-story home, but you may want 40/60 if you have multiple stories, as the extra pressure helps water flow smoothly up to the second floor.

You should check water pressure twice a year to ensure there aren’t any irregularities and that it isn’t too high. It’s also smart to check it any time you notice symptoms of high water pressure (like banging pipes, inconsistent water flow, and leaky fixtures). Similarly, if you live in an area that’s prone to water pressure fluctuations due to municipal supply changes, elevation, or seasonal temperature shifts, check it more frequently. You can buy an affordable water pressure gauge and check the water pressure yourself.

There are several common causes of low water pressure in your sprinkler system, including clogged sprinkler heads and issues with your backflow preventer valve. Start by inspecting and cleaning your sprinkler heads to ensure they’re in working order and there aren’t any blockages. Then, check your backflow preventer valve to ensure it’s open. If you spot damage to it, hire a sprinkler pro to repair or replace it.
