"McCann Home Improvements just completed a large, multi-part project for us: a complete overhaul of an unfinished basement, which involved creating a laundry room, tv/stereo area, and a powder room. The second part of the project was a ‘down to the studs’ remake of a full bathroom. We are absolutely thrilled at the quality of the work, as well as the aesthetics. The basement itself was a disaster— cinder block walls, crumbling old floor tiles, old pipes criss-crossing the ceiling, etc. The ceiling is now properly finished, pipes fully boxed in, with clean lines and open spaces. This was no mere ‘drop-ceiling’ job, but one that required imagination and a host of technical workarounds. The upstairs bath now has a marble lined shower-stall, beautiful porcelain tile on floor and walls, and what was once a tiny space somehow magically appears open, beautiful and luxurious. Anthony McCann, the owner and manager, oversaw all of the project, down to the smallest of details. He was quickly able to put together a plan for us, at a more than reasonable cost. And he delivered on every commitment made, with everything spelled out in a contract to forestall any possible misunderstandings. Anthony himself is extremely affable, committed to doing high-quality work, and a genuine mensch. His crew are likewise easy to get along with, hard-working, respectful of our space and time, and like Anthony, always strove to complete the highest quality work. We are extremely happy with all of the work done for us, would highly recommend McCann to anyone seeking large or small projects, and look forward to working with them again in the future. "Kevin and his team did an outstanding job restoring our basement bathroom. From start to finish, they were incredibly professional, careful, and thorough. I was particularly concerned about moisture getting into the tub area, and Kevin’s team went above and beyond to find the right set of tub and walls to fit our basement. They even had to return one set because it didn’t fit, and I was really impressed with their ability to pivot and ensure we had the best solution. Communication was excellent throughout the project. Kevin was very proactive, mostly texting us each day to let us know when to expect them and being flexible if I had traffic issues. They worked diligently every day over two weeks to complete the restoration, and their attention to detail really showed in the final result. I’m honestly surprised by how much I love the basement bathroom now! I didn’t think I would care much about it since it’s in the basement, but the quality of work has truly transformed the space. Overall, we couldn’t be happier with the work Kevin and his team did. They took the time to explain our options, addressed all of our concerns, and delivered a beautifully restored bathroom that exceeded our expectations. Highly recommend!"

Backsplash Installation questions, answered by experts

It’s easiest to start from an edge as it gives you a straight line. A problem may arise if your edge doesn’t line up perfectly, in which case it’s best to start from the center. Some think that starting tile from the center adds a focal point in the center of the hearth.

On average, tiling a bathroom involves about 12 hours of labor, usually spread over two to three days to accommodate prep work and curing times. A professional tiler can often complete the installation in 6 to 8 hours, whereas a DIYer might take 10 to 16 hours. The total project time is influenced by factors like the bathroom layout, tile type, and necessary prep work, such as removing old tile. The process includes specific timelines for different areas; for example, tiling a floor takes about six hours, while a shower area can take six to ten hours. It is essential to allow for adequate curing time—typically 24 hours each—for the mortar, grout, and caulk, which is why the project extends over several days.

You can lay tile directly on a plywood countertop, but if it’s a high-traffic surface in a kitchen, it’s better to add a moisture-resistant base. Plywood is susceptible to moisture, so if dampness seeps through from the surface around the sink or where you prep food, it can cause the plywood to warp, leading to grout damage, cracked tiles, or mold growth under the surface.

Yes, you can tile over existing tiles in a bathroom, but it is not always recommended. For this method to be successful, the original tile surface must be clean, flat, and free of damage such as cracks, unevenness, mold, or mildew. While tiling over existing tiles can save time and money, there are potential drawbacks. The new adhesive may not bond properly, and the process adds extra weight to the wall or floor. Additionally, the increased height of the surface could interfere with door clearances. For the best and most durable results, removing the old tiles before installing new ones is generally the better option.

The grout shade you choose comes down to personal taste and preference. A darker grout will give you a more dramatic and noticeable contrast with the tile around it; however, lighter grout helps create a more uniform look when blending the colors together. Additionally, a darker grout combined with a patterned tile could be overwhelming to the eye, while lighter grout makes the pattern stand out as the main focus.
