"They did a really good job and I would hire them again for any plumbing job. Specifically, they found the cause of three water leaks in our kitchen, fixed them by replacing rusted pipe by brass, and also installed a new faucet."

"The job was well executed. Compliments to everyone at Speedy Septic. Hayden Buley was very quick to respond to my request for an estimate. I called several other septic system installers on listed on Angie's list who were either booked far into the future, or who did not respond to messages. Hayden made an appointment and came out to inspect the site as agreed and on time. He was very personable and professional. He set up a second meeting involving Mr. Rooter. He then provided an emailed cost estimate. One uncertainty in cost was whether the drain field needed to be replaced. This could not be determined until it was unearthed and inspected. Fortunately the drain field was still functioning well. A new distribution box was needed, and the drain field pipes were cleaned with the "Jetter" and all was well. The job took a little longer than planned due to bad weather. Our only winter snow and ice storms happened while the job was underway. We live on a fairly high hill and the snow and ice conditions were fairly bad, so I can't fault Speedy Septic for having the job take a little bit longer than planned. Then made sure that we had functioning toilets throughout most of the job, always when their work day was done. I'm happy to report that original cost estimate was very accurate. Compliments to all of the Speedy Septic and Mr. Rooter crew. They worked hard in some very cold and nasty weather to get the job done."

"Work not started yet, but will include all-new Hardie replacement siding and door-window casings, also perhaps gutters. The work is defined, priced, contracted and financed. Very pleased so far with the project process, warranties and sales representative Forrest Seamons ([email protected], 503-396-1521)."

Plumbing questions, answered by experts

Some older homes have toilets in the basement to combat sewage backups. This type of toilet, also known as a Pittsburgh potty, acted as a safety valve over the incoming sewer line. If a line backed up, it would back up into the toilet because it was the lowest fixture in the home, keeping it out of sight and away from the finished areas of the house.

Basement toilets were also used by workers with messy jobs, like those who worked in coal mines or steel mills. This way, they could clean up and avoid tracking dirt through their home.

Sealant doesn’t need to be applied to the bolts, but it can be a good way to stop an active leak in the moment. However, don’t rely on it as a cure-all; instead, make sure to fix the problem at the source by changing or tightening the bolts.

If you do use sealant, make sure to spread it thickly and evenly across the bolts and the tank's porcelain.

Yes, you can usually replace a sink without replacing the vanity. It really depends on the type of vanity and the type of sink. You’ll need to make sure you purchase a sink that will fit in the existing space. This requires precise measurements. You’ll also have to carefully remove your old sink, making sure you don’t damage the countertop during the replacement.

Shower valve replacement costs an average of $350, and most homeowners pay between $150 and $550. The price will depend on labor costs in your area, as well as the type of diverter valve you choose. A simple diverter valve could cost just $20 in materials, while a high-end mixing valve for better temperature control can cost $350.

You can use other ways to seal the space where your tub and the bathroom tile meet. Using sealant tape, epoxy sealer, and spray foam can be just as effective as caulking your bathtub. When using alternatives to caulk, the one that is best for you depends on your preferences.

Sealant tape takes less time and effort to use, which is why some homeowners prefer it. Meanwhile, epoxy sealer creates a smooth and glossy finish that can complement your bathroom. Lastly, spray foam is waterproof and can act as insulation for your tub.
