"This job was not easy as the tree to be removed growing very closely among homes & outbuildings. Mike & his crew did a superb job of maneuvering the gigantic lift in among other trees & obstacles in my small front yard. They worked very efficiently, professionally & quickly causing no damage to my home, yard or my neighbors yards & homes. They cleaned up my yard, hauled off debris plus sawed up large limbs & the large trunk into stove size for a low income recipient. They stayed on the time schedule & the cost estimate. I am beyond pleased!"

"After a windstorm pushed our 29-year-old Douglas Fir to a 30 degree angle toward our storage shed and garage, Kris re-scheduled his week and removed the tree without a problem. The tree was in a tight space in our yard with obstacles all around: neighbor's shed, our shed, our garage, our fence, neighbor's fence--you get the idea. The crew came in and removed the tree. Start to finish they were done in about 90 minutes. They worked very clean, as I did not have to do any cleanup after they left. We are very grateful to Kris and his team for their professional work. And the price was much less than I expected. I confidently recommend Columbia Tree Service. You will be very satisfied."

Small jobs welcome

"Steve and the crew were very excellent. They did all that I asked them to and more. They did a great job pruning my trees, roses, and cleaned up all the mess and hauled it away. I would recommend them very highly and plan to have them come again in the spring. Patty L. Hood River"

Tree Service questions, answered by experts

Generally, you’ll want to prune back the trunk by 1 to 2 feet each year to promote bushy growth. Doing so concentrates vegetative buds closer to the bottom of the tree, where you can easily harvest fruit. For side shoots that are a year old, leave at least six leaves.

Never remove more than 30% of a tree’s foliage during pruning—even if your tree is really overgrown. Removing this much foliage at a time could kill your tree.

It takes anywhere from three to seven years for a stump to decompose on its own. This timeframe can depend on the kind of tree and your climate. The lower to the ground the stump is, the faster it rots. If you kill a tree stump with salt, boiling water, herbicide, light deprivation, or burning, the tree stump decomposes faster.

Salt, herbicide, light deprivation, boiling water, and burning can all help dissolve a tree stump. You can also bury the tree stump in soil or mulch to help it rot naturally. Killing a tree stump prevents future regrowth, but you may also remove it by digging it out or grinding it.

If you’re wondering whether you can plant a tree where the stump was removed, know that the soil conditions won’t be ideal, so you should avoid it. The soil beneath the previous tree will likely be depleted of nutrients, plus there may be roots left behind that will seriously hinder the growth of a new tree. Also, if you use salt or other chemical solutions to kill the stump, these can linger in the soil for months or even years and prevent healthy growth. It’s best to choose a different spot that’s at least three feet away for a new tree, or wait at least a year and thoroughly amend the soil before you plant.

Ivy eventually kills trees by restricting its growth, blocking sunlight, absorbing nutrients and water from the soil, and weakening the tree. Trees with ivy are more likely to experience diseases, pests, rot, and fungi growth. When ivy weighs down tree branches, the tree is more likely to break during a storm and cause damage.
