"IYH remolded our entire master bathroom to make it more accessible/ADA compliant for our 13 yo son who has Cerebral Palsy and is wheelchair bound. They also installed flooring in our bedroom and closet. Installed a beautiful wider frame door and cement ramp to entry way. We could not be happier with the end result. John, Kristen, Skyler, Max, Lee, and the rest of the IYH team went above and beyond our expectations. Their craftsmanship and attention to detail is amazing. We would HIGHLY recommend IYH for anyone that is planning to remodel. We will definitely be working with them again for future projects."

"I was very pleased with the outcome of our project to add a pocket door. Paul Marteeny approached it as I had hoped: doing his best not to destroy anything unnecessarily, re-using existing trim if it could go back in, and purchasing/installing all needed pieces. He treated the wall as if it was load bearing, even though it wasn't (better to be sure). Even though our house is not "true," Paul managed to make the adjustments needed for the frame. He provided me with good guidance to open up one side of the wall myself, allowing quick installation of the initial "slab." He gave me a brakedown of his proposal. This allowed us to agree to an amended proposal when it was clear some of the work would be different. This was a clear indicator for me that I would enjoy working with Paul Marteeny. As with all things, there were some concerns: not getting my own copy of the agreement, difficulty in getting responses through email. It was finished, though, and we are enjoying the new door!"

"Douglas and crew worked hard, in the pouring rain, and got the job done. 4 guys, 3 days. Too much for me to handle so glad they did the job for me."

Carpentry questions, answered by experts

There are approximately 5.33 board feet in a 2x4. You can use the board foot calculator in this article to easily find the answer. A 2x4 is 2 inches of thickness by 4 inches of width, so you need to find the length, with 8 feet being the most common. You’d use the calculator here to multiply 2 times 4 times 8, and then divide by 12, arriving at a total of 5.33 board feet.

When deciding whether to use nails or screws for framing, the specific needs of the project must be taken into account. Nails have long been the go-to option for framing due to their affordability, ease of installation, and ability to withstand shear forces. They are perfect for structural framing projects where fast assembly is essential. In contrast, screws offer exceptional holding power and are particularly useful in situations requiring increased strength and resistance to pull-out forces. For projects that prioritize accuracy and long-lasting quality, screws may be the preferred option, though nails remain a dependable and efficient choice.

It's possible to turn your carport into a living space, but there are additional factors to address over turning it into a garage. HVAC, plumbing, and electricity won't be optional, and you'll need finished flooring, drywall, trim work, and legal ceiling height, for starters. Also, keep in mind that living space conversions may require upgrading the foundation underneath, and the permits might be more expensive as well.

Converting a carport into a garage can vary in difficulty depending on its configuration, the condition of the foundation or slab, and its location relative to the house. The process has a lot in common with a home addition, but you can often skip non-essential finishes like fine flooring, trim work, or even drywall and HVAC. The conversion requires experience with drywall, insulation, and other building materials to ensure it’s done safely and correctly. While it might be possible for a DIYer with the proper tools and skills to do the work, it is a complicated and potentially dangerous job. If you’re new to basic construction, it's best to leave this project to the professionals.

When hanging a door frame, it’s recommended that you use screws, not nails. Screws are more secure, easier to tighten, and easier to remove if you need to adjust the frame. On average, the cost to replace a door frame is about $400, but you can save on labor costs if you’re confident in your ability to DIY the project.
