"I am so glad I hired Pinnacle Contractors to build a dog run fence and small deck. We had a challenging space because of buried utility wires and cables and they were very creative in coming up with solutions. They did a beautiful job and were very responsive to my Vision for the project. They exceeded my expectations!"

"Alexsei came through when we were really in a pinch. We were having new florring installed and found disaster under the carpet. Alexsei was fast to respond to my call, came out immediately to assess the job and finished two difficult projects in one week! We are very happy with the quality of work and speediness of completion. I'd recommend Patron General Construction to anyone needing carpentry work done."

"Nael, Molesto, and their team are all excellent professionals. They created a thorough and well structured proposal. They accepted my request to substitute my mahogany stain preference ( which I had researched online). They were always on time and adhered to their schedule. And the quality of their work was excellent."

"Our agency needed to remodel a shelter kitchen area, and picked IYH from a pool of many RFQ bidders as the most qualified and capable. The contract negotiations were straight-forward, direct, efficient, and very friendly – clearly, this team knows how to work well together. The pre-construction team focused on the agency’s needs and truly “crawled inside” the details in the RFQ. They efficiently kept within a reasonable timeframe as to start of construction and projected end dates, effectively dealing with our occasional concerns and one “act of God” event. Most importantly, the on-site team (project manager, site manager, technical staff) all were well-versed in the needs of a shelter, and IYH took very many steps to make sure the agency’s shelter residents were both informed and kept safe, even making construction crew pictures and names available prior to construction. During the construction phase , IYH exceptionally managed demolition, debris management/removal, renovation (framing, plumbing, electrical (both low and high voltage), windows, exterior siding, materials deliveries, sheetrock, painting, cabinetry, countertops, tile backsplash, flooring, lighting), and post-renovation cleanup – including in-situ deep cleaning. Also, IYH was responsive to the predictable mid-construction changes, including a contract expansion for flooring throughout the structure, replacement of the several bath/restroom features, and so on. The high quality of the team members and the work they have produced is evident in both now-hidden and still-visible ways throughout the shelter. Post-construction, our agency will continue to leverage the multi-faceted IYH maintenance and “handyman” services for both this structure and other needs – and we strongly encourage other agencies and homeowners to check out the thorough, professional, and personal work this team easily delivers."

"Aaron was very prompt, professional, efficient, and very easy to work with. He removed a protruding bench-like structure from the entire length of our retaining fence which had become a nuisance from the adjacent neighborhood park and he disposed of the wood, etc. Not only did this improve the look of the fence, no one can sit on our fence any more! Aaron also replaced a broken board in another area of our fence and repaired a leaning post. His cost was very reasonable and we will work with Aaron again on our next project. We highly recommend Structural Holdings, Inc. for any fence and/or deck project! Thank you, Aaron!"

Carpentry questions, answered by experts

Joists do distribute their load to beams, but they don’t sit on top of the beams. Instead, home builders nail or screw the joists directly to the beams such that the end of the joist butts up against the edge of the beam. Beams can sit on other beams for support, but you’ll never see a joist sitting on top of a beam or another joist.

Bump-out additions can extend anywhere from 2 to 15 feet from an existing room. The right size will depend on how you plan to use the new space. For a cantilever bump-out, which doesn't require additional foundation support, the limit is typically 24 inches (2 feet). If a footing and foundation are part of the project, a bump-out can be much larger, even encompassing a whole room. It's also important to remember that many residential properties have limits on the total house size relative to the lot size.

If the bowing basement wall is less than 2 inches, steel or carbon fiber straps are the best solution. For bowing that is more than 2 inches, wall anchors are the most effective. A contractor can help you decide the best method of repair for your home's foundation and also address the root cause of the trouble.

When deciding whether to use nails or screws for framing, the specific needs of the project must be taken into account. Nails have long been the go-to option for framing due to their affordability, ease of installation, and ability to withstand shear forces. They are perfect for structural framing projects where fast assembly is essential. In contrast, screws offer exceptional holding power and are particularly useful in situations requiring increased strength and resistance to pull-out forces. For projects that prioritize accuracy and long-lasting quality, screws may be the preferred option, though nails remain a dependable and efficient choice.

Most of the time, you’ll want to use screws on your subfloor rather than nails. Nails can actually weaken plywood, whereas screws can easily penetrate without damage. They also form a more secure connection because of their shape, preventing squeaky floors and tightly holding the subfloor in place. That said, some contractors do prefer nails depending on the type of floor covering because they allow for more flexibility.
