I called him and he spent quite a bit of time on the phone with me to try to diagnose the problem with the furnace. He discovered what the problem was and I was able to restart the furnace. He also determined a part had to be replaced. There are not many service companies that would have spent the time he did with me on the telephone to try to solve the problem."

Ceiling fans can be a great way to cool your home without the expensive utility bill of running an air conditioner. Plus, ceiling fans can sometimes run in both directions, pushing hot air down in winter and pulling cold air up in summer. There are a few ways to reduce your electricity bills if you use window AC units to keep cool. Set the unit temperature at least 1 degree higher than it is currently to reduce costs. Not if you have a standard unit. Because portable AC units actually work to dehumidify the room, you’ll likely need to drain the unit from time to time—but you won’t have to put water into it. There is, however, another type of air conditioner called a swamp cooler that requires water to operate. If you have a swamp cooler, you may need to fill a reservoir with water and potentially ice. But a swamp cooler is different from a standard portable AC unit.

Unlike other types of air conditioning, portable units don’t require venting or any other associated parts like hoses. For that reason, they don’t function the same as their counterparts, but will do a similarly good job of cooling down small spaces and won’t require any installation or much maintenance.

To make the most out of your AC, consider implementing the following best practices: 

  • Choose the right size AC for your home to ensure your unit runs as efficiently as possible.

  • Choose a window with shade, as direct sunlight can cause your AC unit to overheat. 

  • Clean or replace the filter at least every two months. 

  • Inspect the AC’s fan and straighten it if necessary. 

  • Discontinue use immediately if you suspect a malfunction, as running the AC while broken can lead to significant issues. 

  • Turn off (or adjust the temperature) when you leave the house.
