"I am very pleased with AVA Construction. From the bidding process to the installation of the solid hardwood floor, Aleksey was very professional and a real craftsman. After the floor was installed he made sure the work area was clean and returned to normal. I would definitely use this company again."

Customers say: Quality work

"Mel and his sons did a superb job. I had many questions before the work began, which Mel answered, although it interfered with the other jobs he was managing, apparently. Tips to optimal results: At the time of an estimate, establish precise terms. Mel did not give us a written contract, so we were concerned that everything would go well. Keep excellent lines of communication on both parties. Be prepared to pay about 50% of the job before they begin, and specify that you will pay the remainder after you have seen and approved of the completed work. Ask for photos/samples of other jobs. Mel educated me about the type of oak floor we have, how to take care of them, and what is advised for proper care of the floor. He is also very knowledgeable of water-based vs oil-based finish, and can apply either type. Mel could have received a 5-star rating if his customer service matched the quality of the work."

Small jobs welcome

"Hired Palmer Concrete Coatings to do a metallic epoxy coating in my garage last month. Matthew was a true professional helping me decide between a few options until I settled on a decision, always on time, competitive price and the final result was tremendous. Highly recommend and will hire them again if I need this service in the future. A++."

Flooring Installation questions, answered by experts

Carpet is an effective natural insulator, so it will make a room slightly warmer than laminate. The material’s insulating properties also make carpeted rooms more efficient for temperature regulation.

Few home upgrades add resale value above their installation cost, including terrazzo floors. However, they are still a good option if you like the look. While terrazzo may be expensive, it has a solid return on investment of around 55% to 70%. The durability and low maintenance requirements of terrazzo can be appealing selling points, as many buyers will appreciate flooring that can last 40 to 100 years.

There are a few different types of finishes to choose from for the final step of the project.

Water-based polyurethane sealants emit fewer odors and fumes but dry quickly, which can pose a challenge when trying to get a smooth coat. Oil-based polyurethane sealants let out more odors and fumes into the air (it’s especially important to wear a respirator if you choose this type), but they take longer to dry, which can be more forgiving during the finishing step.

Some may prefer wood oil to polyurethane because rather than creating a layer, it becomes part of the wood. Wood oil takes longer to dry, and is less resistant to wear and tear; however, it creates a natural-looking result by enhancing the grain of the wood.

Carpeting with a low pile is both slip-resistant and soft, making it one of the safest types of flooring in the case of slips and falls. In order to be fully ADA-compliant, carpet shouldn’t exceed the thickness of half an inch, and you should secure the edges to the floor to prevent trip hazards.

Other ADA-compliant flooring options include hardwood, laminate, or ceramic tile with a gritty, anti-slip surface. Ceramic or porcelain tile are actually some of the best types of flooring for wheelchair users.

Whether you install flooring before or after kitchen cabinets depends primarily on the type of flooring you are using. For materials like hardwood, tile, and sheet flooring, the best practice is to install the flooring first. This ensures the cabinets are installed at the correct height and on a stable surface. However, you should not install cabinets on top of floating floors, such as laminate or luxury vinyl plank (LVP). These types of flooring need room to expand and contract with temperature and humidity changes. Placing heavy cabinets on top can restrict this movement, potentially causing the floor to buckle and making the cabinets unstable. For floating floors, install the cabinets first and then lay the flooring up to them. Other reasons to consider installing cabinets before the flooring include saving money on materials (since you won't need flooring under the cabinets) and avoiding potential damage to your new floor during cabinet installation. Additionally, installing cabinets directly on the subfloor might prevent voiding your flooring's warranty.
