"We are builders and have been building in central Ohio for over 25 years. We are thankful to have known Dave. He is extremely knowledgeable, communicates detals in an easy way and is very prompt to deliver. He often finds other ways to engineer things that we hadnt considered which make him our 1st choice in engineers. We would highly reccommend him and his services."

"Had Betts Structural Engineering come and look at the foundation of a house we were in contract on. Josh came out and was professional and informative. He informed us the foundation was failing and explained what needed to be done. He throughly explained everything and told us how we could do it ourselves for much cheaper than a contractor could do it. In the end he saved us from a long and expensive process if we proceeded with the house."

"The person who came out and gave an estimate for the work was very accurate in his measurements and was very courteous. They gave us the lowest quote, so we called a couple of weeks later to set up the time for them to work on it. They came to do the work at the scheduled time. They explained what they would be doing and when they were done showed the work to me. There must have been some lack of communication somewhere because the crew that came to do the work didn't know they would have to be tearing out a couple of walls to get the trench dug out. They did it anyway and everything was installed and working great so far, though we haven't had a rainfall yet. The only complaint that we have is that they left a lot to clean up, but I think that was partly because they hadn't planned on cutting out a couple of walls. The price was so low though that if they had planned on that I think the estimate would have been a lot higher. So for that price, we could do the cleanup without too much complaining. This is a company we would definitely hire again.

Structural Engineering questions, answered by experts

Before contacting a structural engineer in Springfield, gather any available building plans, previous renovation records, and a recent property survey. Take clear photos of current conditions, especially any visible cracks or water damage. List past repairs and note recurring issues. Define your project goals, preferred timeline, and budget. Check if your property falls within a historic district or has zoning restrictions that might affect the project.

Helpful?

In Springfield, warning signs include new or widening cracks in walls or foundations, uneven floors, or doors and windows that no longer close properly. If previous work was done without permits or doesn’t meet current code standards, it should be reassessed. Persistent water leaks, visible deterioration, or missing documentation are also strong indicators that a structural engineering project may need to be revisited.

Helpful?

In Springfield, homeowners often weigh the benefits of modernizing structural elements versus preserving original features, especially in older homes. Opting for full code compliance may extend the project timeline but ensures long-term safety. Deciding between temporary repairs and comprehensive upgrades impacts future maintenance. Homeowners also need to balance project scope with their budget and consider how choices affect property value.

Helpful?

In Springfield, homeowners should pay close attention to the area’s clay-heavy soils, which can shift and impact foundation stability. Freeze-thaw cycles are common and may cause cracks or heaving. Consider local wind loads, especially during storm season, and check for historic district guidelines that could affect design. Also, evaluate groundwater levels and drainage to prevent moisture-related structural issues.

Helpful?

In Springfield, professionals start by assessing which structural components are interconnected, such as load-bearing walls and foundation sections. They review local permit requirements and building codes to define the project’s legal scope. If the property is in a historic district or shares walls with neighbors, the assessment expands. Safety, fire egress, and accessibility standards are also considered when outlining project boundaries.
