"Mike performed an excellent job running wire and installing a ceiling light in my bathroom. He was very professional, prompt, and very careful to protect the location in which the work was done. This work required him to go into my attic to run wire, which was not easy because of the blown insulation and small space. I am very happy with the work performed and highly recommend him!"

"JSD did good work. Their billing process was awful. They did work early October. I was provided a numerically illegible bill. Upon request on Nov. 14th I was provided a slightly more numerically legible bill. Jowel Santo Domingo did not take off the previously paid initial visit charge as I was told he would do. Mr. Santo Domingo also charged me twice for a plumbing service. He also made a mathematical error $100 in his favor. He said they were issuing me a refund which they did not. He has not returned phone calls as he said they would. It is February now and he still owes us over $500. We are unfortunately having to get a lawyer friend involved now."

Unfinished Carpentry questions, answered by experts

Yes, you can hammer a nail into a wall stud. But before you do, it’s important to confirm that you’re actually nailing into a stud—and not wiring, pipes, or ductwork. To check, find a few more studs in the wall, then measure to make sure they’re either 16 or 24 inches apart.

The best way to calculate framing costs is by basing your costs on the square footage of your home. On average, framing your home could cost anywhere between $7 and $16 per square foot.

To ensure you don’t go over budget, base your estimates on the higher end of the price range. If you know you’re going to use high-end materials or require a custom or complex build, you might even want to tack on an additional 5% of your budget.

There are a few options if you miss a stud. You can simply patch the hole with spackle, sand it down, repaint it, and then find the stud—essentially starting over. If you don’t want to do that, you can insert one of the more robust drywall anchor options and hang your item on that, but that will only work if the drywall is in excellent condition and the anchor is rated for the weight of the item you’re hanging on it. You may be able to cover the hole with the object itself once it’s mounted, but it’s still recommended to at least fill the hole to protect insulation and prevent vermin from entering.

Joists do distribute their load to beams, but they don’t sit on top of the beams. Instead, home builders nail or screw the joists directly to the beams such that the end of the joist butts up against the edge of the beam. Beams can sit on other beams for support, but you’ll never see a joist sitting on top of a beam or another joist.

Yes, unresolved damage can decrease property integrity and market value.
