Mr. Hoffman and his team were very thorough and installed an ingenious system to close stair rafters and safety gates for the safety of our infant - toddler daughter. He took the job so incredibly seriously in that he knew her safety was paramount and it showed through the design of the materials and selection of materials. He is very responsive and his team completed an impeccable job.

This is the first time we have worked with a contractor. The work was fine and professionally handled. Be prepared for cost overruns and delays. We upgraded some things and ran into unforeseeable problems.

Overall, Hoffman Construction did a great job. As with many contractors, there were many subcontractors whose work had to be coordinated by Mr. Hoffman. The logistics of this were handled very well, and Barry made every effort to keep the job moving forward. I want to especially note the high quality work done by the main carpenter on the project, John Newton. All of the other contractors also worked in an efficient and professional manner. I was most impressed by their attention to detail, and the willingness to make everything meet our expectations.

Barry and his excellent team members widened a wall and installed tile in my kitchen shortly after I bought my house in 2016; I went with Barry, rather than other contractors, because he thoroughly and thoughtfully assessed all floors of my house and, moreover, expressed genuine interest in ensuring that it was taken care of. The wall and the tile look fabulous, and since then, I've sought Barry's insight on other minor matters, like roof and floor issues. My house is over 100 years old and has lived through numerous renovations. I think that these are some of the best. I highly recommend Hoffman Construction.

After interviewing several contractors I chose Hoffman Construction to do a new roof, replace front porch columns, and rehab the old windows in my century home. All the work was done very well. Barry truly cares about his clients and takes pride in doing quality work. His carpenter John was great, as well as the team of roofers and gutter man. All projects went as smoothly as possible with only some minor bumps in the road and delays due to the freezing weather. Barry was in contact with me through all the projects and was easy to get a hold of for any questions. I plan on meeting with him again to talk about future projects.

Barry is great to work with and I've used him several times. He is very knowledgeable and gives you lots of options without any pressure. It's very obvious he has a lot of experience and that really helps plan all the expected work in advance. I will use him again for my next remodel.

Mr. Hoffman was well organized and very responsive. The work was scheduled and completed very quickly which I greatly appreciated. The quality of the work was excellent. His contractors were very respectful of my property putting down drop cloths to ensure nothing was damaged. They left the property as clean as they found it. When we ran into a few unexpected challenges with the hood they figured out how to work through them and get the work done.

He came out and he made some suggestions about cabinetry changes and a new counter and a new sink and so forth and so on but essentially the changes weren't gonna make much difference to that kitchen.

The man put forth a lot of effort and time finding like the kind of sink I wanted and other things and there were constraints based on the size of the kitchen about what you could do and where the windows were placed in the kitchen and so this wasn't so easy. I wanted a double like stainless sink and I have a porcelain sink in there that's a double sink and you'd think that you could just swap one out for the other but things have changed in their size and configuration and what he did find I don't know if you are familiar with sinks like the sink where you have you actually have two bowls but one is smaller, and that would have allowed me to have a small dish washer installed as part of his project which I don't have.

He knows his work, he has a lot of connections in the industry. He notices things that are kind of unexpected.

I needed to have carpentry work on a small 3X3 ft. floor, 6 steps to be replaced and old paneling removed that was leading to a basement. I read the reviews and regret I did not listen to the person that wrote the review on 12-23-2015. That review states "the owner showed and complained hunger and leaves in the middle of the meeting". That was my experience with Mr. Hoffman I found him to be unreliable, unprofessional, inability to cope with a problems, confused at thinking and just plain scary weird. I called for an estimate and he did show up on time and said he would get back to me in a couple of days with an estimate. After a week without an estimate I called him and he said he was on a religious holiday and would send the estimate. Another week went by and no estimate came. I called a second time and he said he had a medical emergency and the estimate would be sent. Another week passed and I called at 4 pm. during regular business hours and he was upset because he was doing child care and the estimate would be sent by midnight. All of this should of been a red flag to to how unreliable and unprofessional he would be in completing the project. The contract was sent and the agreed price was $1,453.00. It states in the contract "alterations will be addressed in separate change orders". Be forewarned about that clause Mr. Hoffman will use it to bring your bill higher which he did. I signed the contract and Mr. Hoffman said he would call when the work would be started. The next day close to 1:00 in the afternoon the 2 workers showed up unannounced and they were scheduled to work and that was another red flag to this companies unreliability. I was completely surprised since I did not receive a call which I was told I would receive. They worked from 1 to 4:30pm. putting in 3 hrs. that day. That day they took off 2 small wall panelings and told me that it would be better if I replaced it with blue board. When I met Mr.Hoffman for the estimate he said the opposite that paneling would be fine. He claimed he was an expert on work done to old homes yet did not know which correct boarding to use which is another red flag to the lack of knowledge of this owner.. The worker advised me blue board would be better because of the basement moisture. I agreed and called Mr.Hoffman and let him know blue board would be used instead of paneling. He responded by saying" Oh we are going to have to make adjustments". I asked what adjustment and he said he would call me back and he did not. He did not tell me about any price increase or what the adjustment would cost me.. That night I received a paypal for $598.64 marked simply as fee. The contract stated $581.20 and I assumed that was the deposit with the adjustment since he did not explain adjustment or call me back. I sent an e-mail to get an understanding of what the adjustment for and he sent back a response" it is a wash". I have no idea what he was referring to and what it meant. and would discuss it the following day. The 2nd. day the workers showed up and had completed some of the work and Mr. Hoffman did not show up to review any of the work which I thought was strange since most professional contractors look over daily the work and progress.. At this point I had 1 1/2 days of work. Mr. Hoffman stated this would be a 2-3 days of work so it was running according to the original contract estimate of $1, 453.00. I received 2 paypal requesting change order to no.1 paneling and another paypal. stating at start draw. Extremely confusing one for $226.80 and the other $523.81 and no explanation to what these figures are all about. I decided I would call him the next day and make a decision to end this since he could not explain his bills and for not showing up to review the work. The workers showed up the next day and that point I had 1 1/2 days of work going into 2 days according to contract. Mr. Hoffman showed up an hour later and told me this work is extensive and will cost you more. WHAT??? He never showed up to review the work and the work was going according to contract and he walks in and claims this is extensive. He just says it is extensive without any explanation. What?? They were almost completed and he claims all of this is extensive. Out of the blue, not one time showing up and not informing me he informs me this is going to cost you more. I responded to why did he failed to inform me of the higher cost before the workers showed this day and I requested he show me paperwork on all extensive costs. I would not have agreed to a higher cost before he sent his workers over that day. I asked again why wasn't I notified of the higher cost and he started a bizarre rant " I am too busy" " I can't go to all my jobs". " I am too busy". and he kept repeating this over and over.. He threw up his arms and acting irrationally he started yelling "Free work, Free work everybody wants free work". He told his workers to "drop everything" and called a business meeting on my driveway in my hearing distance. What???? On my driveway he was trying to figure the calculations. What???. He pulled out a piece of paper and pen and pointed to the one worker and then the other asking them how many hours did they work here. I couldn't believe what I was hearing he didn't even know his workers hours so how could he come up with his extensive bill.. As I am standing waiting for him to end his workers meeting on my time he literally runs to his truck. Yes just just like the other review he ran away in a strange almost scary way. . He sat in his truck for 15 minutes and that was just so scary weird I really didn't want him back inside my home. Instead of returning to talk to me like a professional he stayed in his truck.and just sat . What he was doing ? Just sitting. He finally came back to my house and apologized for his behavior and wanted me to go outside of hearing distance of his workers. I refused and told him where we were standing was fine. I was not going to be alone with him because of the irrational behavior he just put on moments ago. He pulled out a piece of paper that he just figured out and really could not give a good accurate explanation to the bill. He was all over the paper and did not know what he was talking about. Kept repeating extensive coverage all in the contract and totally disorganized with explanation He didn't even have a copy of the contract and I had to provide mine for him to review.. Pulled out a calculator to add up and that was all made up because he came with a price and then had to create a bill in front of me. A good contractor would of showed up with the knowledge of his workers hours and paperwork of amounts of extensive work. No extensive work was done and he could not prove it. I informed him I would pay for couple of hours that was left in the day fully knowing the work would not be completed. I just wanted to end this very weird episode as soon as I could. and get them all out of my home. As Mr. Hoffman left he told his workers finish the day and told them do no more. I never requested at anytime these workers do anything out of the contract. In a couple of hours the workers left and I was left with unfinished work at a high cost. I would never use this company again because the owner can be very misleading and can't calculate the bills. He will start with the lowest possible amount as an estimate and use the words in the contract which state extensive coverage at a higher rate. No extensive coverage was ever done during over the 2 days. He showed up to notify me after the workers began work to notify me this was extra money. He should of notified me before they arrived and I found this to be very deceptive. That evening I was sent 2 more pay pals one for $450.00 and he claimed change order and another $374.15 final draw. over 2 days I receive 5 pay pal for various amount totally ridiculous!! Then he sent a e-mail for me to sign a change order 2 when I ended everything with this company. So bizarre! The original estimate was $1,453.00 and the final amount was $2,623.34. He stated he gave me a angies list discount of $450.00 which I don't believe happened since it was not in the origina

We purchased a home built in 1910 in Tremont Ohio that needed major repairs in order to make it livable. We used a 203K loan to purchase the house, and the loan process was very complicated, but Barry was thoughtful and patient throughout the whole process. The work is excellent, and we love our home. Barry has even been attentive since the work has been completed, helping us fix some unforeseen but minor plumbing issues, and recommending a number of sub contractors for other jobs.
Just like any job, there were bumps in the road, but we would certainly hire Barry again. Barry's expertise and the quality of his work make him a great pick.

Since this was actually the first remodeling job I?ve ever had done through a general contractor, I turned to Angie?s List for a description of what a contractor is responsible for in order to give a fair review. According to Angie, ?A general contractor will assess the project from the initial meeting with the homeowner and devise a plan to guide the job all the way to completion. Ultimately, the role of a general contractor is to oversee the day-to-day operations of a project while acting as the communication liaison for all parties involved.?
When I called Barry, it was initially to find out if he did re-facing of cabinets. During that phone call, he asked some important questions to find out what my needs and concerns were. The reason I was hesitant about a complete cabinet remodel was because I did not want to have workers in my house for weeks on end. Once Barry understood that concern, and got information on the size of my kitchen (11? X 10.5?) and the aspects of what I wanted done (cabinets and counter only ? no new flooring or appliances) he assured me the project would not take more that 1 ? 1 ½ weeks. He made some suggestions to alter my initial plans to make the remodel both less expensive, and to make the layout attractive and efficient. He gave me a rough estimate of the costs, and once I had agreed that I would like to proceed, he had diagrams and 3D drawings drawn up so I could get a visual of what would be done.
A contractor is also responsible for providing a detailed contract. According to Angie, a good contract should have a job description, start and completion dates, payment terms, procedure for work order changes, and a detailed outline of costs, labor and materials. My contract had all but the details of the labor costs. This did make it difficult for me to reference how much I should be saving if/when I requested changes to the plan, so this would be a recommendation that I would suggest other homeowners should request as part of their contract. To give you a general idea of material costs, the Waypoint 600 series cabinets cost $3,500 and the granite was $1,680. I also had a new sink, faucet, and microwave installed (another $680).
Finally, I came to realize that a contractor can only provide great service if he has a great crew (and that is only going to happen if someone has been in business for awhile and has learned who is skilled and reliable). Fortunately for me, all of the subcontractors were wonderful! The carpenters were skilled, and were able to coordinate their work with the electrician and plumber so that it all went smoothly. All the subcontractors were also extremely polite and professional. There were a few extra ?corrections? that needed to be made (extra circuits, moving some water pipes), and they answered all my questions and addressed all my concerns with a phrase I came to love, ?That won?t be a problem.? The last few days of ?touch-up? did get stretched out a bit, but if we don?t count that small glitch, the entire cabinet and countertop replacement took 7 working days. Barry came through within his time estimate and I love the finished product.
