"Steve not only does excellent work, but is very friendly and reasonably priced. He not only replaced our existing windows and patio slider, but redid all of the interior and exterior trim as well. Everything looks beautiful, and we couldnâ t be more pleased. He explained everything before and during the process, so we knew exactly what to expect. Steve has done other work for us as well, including gutter and fascia repairs, lighting installation, and general carpentry. Heâ s truly a Jack of all trades, and I highly recommend him for any home improvement projects you might have!"

"Great young men to work with. Always punctual. Helped me with ideas that would fit with my styled home. Fantastic communication. Quickly returned calls and kept me informed every step of the project. Already have plans to use them in the near future. Many thanks to Vincent and Drake for a job well done! Sorry I don't have an outdoor photo, but it looks great. Nice curb appeal."

"I’m very happy with the work done by Dan from Westside Home Improvement. He was very professional and super knowledgeable about everything from the beginning to the end of the project; he was consistently communicative; and he gave me a fair price for the quality and quantity of work that he did. Now my deck looks nearly like new! I would definitely recommend Westside Home Improvement to anyone looking to get home repairs done!"

"Zachary went above and beyond on this project. Although we were unable to source our current siding (as it is now out of production), Zachary replaced our damaged siding by using pieces from the top rear of the house and then replacing those with the closest match we could source. Came out looking good as new - and the replaced pieces are such a close match that it is almost impossible to tell the difference. Very pleased!"

Carpentry questions, answered by experts

There are both temporary and permanent ways to enclose a carport. If you’re looking to enclose your carport for the winter, a canvas enclosure could do the trick. It won’t be as protective as a permanent structure, but it can offer some protection from elements like snow, rain, and wind. For a permanent enclosure, you can add extra walls, add a new vertical roof, or a lean-to addition on one side of the structure.

While some highly experienced homeowners can frame a house independently, it is not advisable. You will need ample carpentry experience, a team of helpers, and professionals to sign off on your work to meet local building codes. For the safest outcome, we recommend buying or building a house with the guidance of professionals.

The easiest way to tell if a wall is load bearing is to check if it’s an exterior wall or if it runs perpendicular to the joists above and below it (or parallel to beams). Exterior walls are almost always load-bearing, and walls that run under beams or parallel to them are also usually load-bearing. There are exceptions to these rules, and walls that don’t fit into these categories can still be load-bearing. If you’re unsure, hire a structural engineer to look at your home to assess whether or not the wall is structural.

Framing is the shell of the house. It includes several steps, including studs, plumbing, and electricity. A professional will ensure the wall frame is secured for the house’s structural integrity.

Framing prices change depending on the material and whether the wall is load-bearing. Most contractors use wood to frame a home, but metal is another popular choice.

Removing a load-bearing wall affects the structural integrity of your home, so you’ll need a permit before starting the work. Building codes vary by municipality, and obtaining a permit and having the work inspected after completion will ensure you’re in compliance with all applicable regulations.
