"HR Tile provided top-notch service and quality super quickly! This was the first large renovation I had done as a first time homebuyer and I couldn't be more pleased with the overall experience and results. I look forward to working on more projects with this contractor in the future. Absolutely fantastic results!"

"Entoni and his team were great. They had few unforeseen challenges once the job started but figured it all out and kept the project moving. They delivered a fantastic finished tile install for my project. I highly recommend them."

"A bad flood gave us a silver lining that was Riji Home Improvements. Months ago we had Pedro and Luis help us with our dream kitchen. Such a wonderful experience with them, truly. This time around they came in quickly for the rescue when we had to gut our kitchen (and the rest of the floor) due to a flood. And again, very nice to work with them, so easy during a difficult time. Having new ceilings and walls allowed Pedro to come up with a new design which we love. He and his crew were smart, efficient, and helpful. Luis is always great to work with, and presto: NEW FABULOUS KITCHEN. We can highly recommend Riji Home Improvements!"

"After having my existing floors refinished very poorly by another company, I knew I would not be using them to sand and stain brand new unfinished hardwood that I had installed in the rest of my house. I had called Sal based on a recommendation from a contractor. He came to my house the same day and gave me a very reasonable estimate shortly after he left. He was very responsive and easily reachable for any questions I had before and during the work. His crew was neat, effective and did a beautiful job on my new floors. My only regret is not calling Sal sooner and hiring him for the first job. I would highly recommend him and his company and I plan on using them to redo the terrible job that was done on my other floors."

"Absolutely blown away by the level of expertise, excellent customer service and overall experience from Villa Marble Stone. I hired them for a kitchen remodel and they did stone for my countertops and backsplash, plus stone for my bathroom. I was able to choose the exact stone and they quickly installed it (literally next day in the case of my bathroom) to complete my remodel. Their level of service and attention to detail added so much value to my home and living space. Cannot recommend them enough and will be hiring them for future projects."

"Westbrook Contracting did outstanding work from start to finish. They re-did a master bath and it looks perfect! The new kitchen counter and backsplash they installed transformed that space. Painting and plastering they did throughout the house was also very, very good. The crews that did the work were professional, timely, good on details, and obviously experienced. The quality of the work was high and the prices were reasonable. Dave's suggestions and advice were excellent. Communication with Dave and the crews was consistently good, even when I was several states away. I highly recommend this company!"

Backsplash Installation questions, answered by experts

When choosing between porcelain and ceramic tile, the best option depends on your specific needs, budget, and project application. Porcelain tile is generally more durable, denser, and harder than ceramic, making it a good choice for busy, high-traffic areas. It also offers superior moisture resistance, making it ideal for moisture-retaining spaces. However, porcelain is typically more expensive, and its hardness can make it brittle, potentially causing it to crack if a heavy object is dropped on it. In contrast, ceramic tile is a more budget-friendly option with lower material and installation costs. It is softer and easier to work with, making it a great choice for DIY projects. While not as durable as porcelain, ceramic is still a quality material suitable for many home applications, particularly small, decorative projects.

You can lay tile directly on a plywood countertop, but if it’s a high-traffic surface in a kitchen, it’s better to add a moisture-resistant base. Plywood is susceptible to moisture, so if dampness seeps through from the surface around the sink or where you prep food, it can cause the plywood to warp, leading to grout damage, cracked tiles, or mold growth under the surface.

Terracotta tile is a broad term for clay tile that’s been fired in a kiln, and Saltillo tile is a specific type of terracotta tile produced in Saltillo, Mexico. In addition to Saltillo, terracotta tile comes in a range of other shades and styles. You’ll often find it used in buildings throughout Mexico, southern Europe, and the western United States.

For best results, you should remove the toilet in a bathroom before removing tile or installing new tile. If you don’t remove the toilet, it will be harder to fully waterproof the tile around the toilet, which could increase the risk of mold growth or plumbing leaks. If you have trouble removing the toilet, hire a plumber to help.

You should always use caulk instead of grout where the tile meets the wall. This will help your tile installation look great and last a long time. When you accidentally use grout for the corner seams, you end up making the tiles too rigid. So as the wall shifts over time, your tiles have no wiggle room. This can lead to tile damage, which will eventually require you to do at least a partial reinstallation.
