"Having had work done in my home from small tasks to significant renovations I have encountered several contractors who perform marginal or substandard work so I decided to source a reputable contractor from Angi. After reading the comments and reviews, I arranged a personal meeting with Mike Melia for my bathroom renovation. Mike responded quickly to evaluate and explore and explain the best options while taking into consideration my handicaps. Throughout the project there was much infrastructure from prior work performed and existing conditions. Mike addressed all structural problems, plumbing and electrical repairs including a new sub panel. Mike has remarkable attention to detail for every aspect of work and he completed the work with a high standard of professionalism with his employees and subcontractors. Mike was on site everyday in constant communication with myself and my insurance company. He was unexpectedly neat and clean throughout the process. This very challenging project could not have gone smoother. He is personally knowledgeable and takes pride in his work. I would highly recommend Mike and his team. I am now using Mike and his team to build a full deck and to make structural repairs to my garage. I hope my experience inspires others to contact Mike Melia when it comes to finding value versus price. Not the lowest bidder, but worth every penny to have all aspects of service completed to a high professional level. Mike also went above and beyond not charging for several tasks! Mike did the most professional and comprehensive work ever done in my home! Richard Dunn Nutley New Jersey"

"Excellent contractors! We keep hiring them. They are extremely efficient. And they do it all. They worked on our bk condo by adding a staircase and building a second floor from scratch., as well as a total kitchen remodel. They also did a complete cosmetic update renovation to my mom’s house in queens. You know you have great contractors when you go back to them to get more work done."

"Harvey and his team did a great job, everything looks great now and is properly installed. They were on time and completed on time and cleaned up after themselves. Harvey fixed work that was very badly done by another contractor."

"Ryan is an excepional contractor. We have had a lot of work done over the years and he is one of the best. Always on time, responsive, good at communication, and a pleasure to work with. Ryan discovered an issue with our engineering plans and had it rectified. His subcontractors were all great. All town inspections went well and were immediately approved. Indigo is the company I will be using in the future."

"It went extremely well and we LOVE our newly renovated and constructed home! Keith was the general contractor for a 2 story 800 sq. ft addition plus renovations. He has a great group of people doing the work (masons, carpenters, tiles, plumbers, electric, etc.) and truly all of them did excellent work and were a pleasure to deal with. This is a contractor who is as honest as the day is long. Furthermore, you know things will change at some point and he was awesome at addressing changes/issues and gets things resolved. We interviewed several companies and we are so glad we chose Keith, his son Grant, and Built-Well. We have some more work to be done, and we will be bringing them all back to do it. We have already recommended them to friends. I think that says it all."

"didn't like that they came for an estimate and then when the contractor came he didn't know what needed to been done. the estimate was off . was given a range of 450.-750.00 the contractor had to remeasure all of the things i wanted done and then had to go purchase the materials which i was paying by the hour, i felt like the initial estimate should have given him the required information so that he could show up at the job site with the materials."

"We've owned our home for just over two years, and we have worked with Wilber's on several occasions now. I want to write to whole-heartedly recommend them. Enthusiastically. We've had them do smaller jobs like repairing some of our plaster walls in places that were beyond our ability, rebuilding porch posts that were rotten, and installing lattice around the porch. Recently we started a renovation of our garage -- which will involve replacing windows, repairing siding, and the largest part, completely replacing the roof. I'm writing this review after one of their teams just finished the new roof. I cannot speak highly enough about the professionalism of everyone we've worked with from Wilber's. Work areas are tidy. Work moves efficiently while attention to detail is totally maintained. The roofing foreman communicated with us throughout the job -- making sure we talked through any choices that had to be made. In those conversations, he was always clear and patient. I also have to say the same for Erick Granados who has been our point person on all of the jobs we've done with them. Erick's a pleasure to work with. Total pro. Direct about choices, costs and tradeoffs. The day we started work on the garage, we actually had a mishap -- which was that the foreman had ordered shingles that were close to what was on the house (IKO shingles) but not identical. When we realized the issue, we hit that point you sometimes reach contractors -- where something isn't quite right, and fixing it will require time and effort... and therefore expense... on behalf of the company. Erick and the roofing foreman simply made it right. No tension, no run around -- just made it right. I appreciate that so much. They just asked for the name of the shingles on the house, and before I knew it, someone came to get the other shingles, and brought the right ones within a few hours. The work itself on all of the work we've contracted Wilber's for has been terrific. Also want to mention, there's tons of little things contractors can do -- just to be helpful and great. For example, the crawl space in our garage was filled with random stuff. Barrels, dairy crates, coolers, old dish racks. It's the kind of thing that isn't in a contract, but the guys carefully brought it all down, and helped us sort out and set aside anything we'd want to keep. In the middle of the job, I pulled out shelving units in the garage from the previous owner, and when the team cleaned up the site -- which they did quickly and thoroughly -- they loaded all of that shelving wreckage (lots of it), into the dump truck. Once we complete this work on our garage, this will be the third project we've done with Wilber's. I have every expectation that they'll be our first call on the various work we'll need to do going forward."

Unfinished Carpentry questions, answered by experts

The easiest way to tell if a wall is load bearing is to check if it’s an exterior wall or if it runs perpendicular to the joists above and below it (or parallel to beams). Exterior walls are almost always load-bearing, and walls that run under beams or parallel to them are also usually load-bearing. There are exceptions to these rules, and walls that don’t fit into these categories can still be load-bearing. If you’re unsure, hire a structural engineer to look at your home to assess whether or not the wall is structural.

Yes, a 2x6 should hold a porch swing and safely support the load. A smaller joist runs the risk of it not offering enough support for the swing. If you have a joist smaller than 2x6, add additional bolstering support.

An A-frame home can be cheaper to build than a traditional house, but that is not always a given. Prices can be fairly similar in some cases, depending on the location, design, and necessary site preparation. Costs for an A-frame typically run between $100 to $200 per square foot, which is comparable to the cost of a traditional home. The cost of an A-frame can come in under those numbers if you opt for a prefabricated kit.

Framing a house with steel generally takes less time—around five to eight weeks—than most building materials. The steel components can also be made quickly off-site and manufactured with pre-punched holes for running piping and electrical wiring, which will lessen the prep work and extra labor during construction.

To calculate the number of linear feet of baseboard you’ll need, measure the length of each wall of the room you’re installing them in as close to the floor as possible, rounding up to the next full linear foot. If it’s your first DIY molding job, having a few extra feet on hand for miscuts is a good idea.
