"I cannot sing the praises of Jose and his team enough. I purchased a new home that had carpeting everywhere and hired J & J Elite Carpentry Inc to replace with wood floors. They did an AMAZING job as you can see from the pictures. J&J even took care of replacing a few closet doors. Jose and his team are very friendly, knowledgable, patient, responsive, on time and professional. They communicate and are transparent with you every step of the way and get the job done with such great detail and care. They also specialize in other areas so I plan to hire them for other home repair needs."

"As it happens, Wilber's Painting has skilled carpenters on staff who are competent, experienced, and committed to old world craftsmanship. Our good fortune was getting Maynor, a highly talented carpenter, who constructed and installed the door, which is quite attractive. The installation was tricky because the 90 year-old frame was not perfectly squared but he managed to get the right fit. Mahogany was used for the door frame and safety glass for the insert. I opted not to have a screen insert, so the glass is a permanent fixture."

"Francisco and Carlos arrived on time to set up the canvases on the floor. Francisco left and said he's pick up the painter in 8 hours. I had prepped the walls (spackled) and removed the furniture and electrical outlets/switch plates off the walls to speed up the painting process. Carlos, the painter, was neat and clean as he painted the ceiling, walls and floor trim and completed the job in the time frame that I paid for.  The walls and ceiling look great and overall the job was professionally done and the painter ensured that I was happy with the results. I am very happy with the work performed and would definitely hire them again.  I would also recommend them to friends and family.

"I found Battlecat in Home Advisor. I am so happy that I hired them to build my deck! The team was so professional and courteous! They spent the time helping me with all of the requirements needed from the township. They were even here in the pouring rain to take measurements so the project would stay on calendar! The building team spent the time going through all of the plans and measurements-making sure that each inch of deck was level and precise! And their price was very reasonable and quite competitive! I would highly recommend Battlecat for any home design or renovation project!! I have every intention of hiring them when Iâ m ready to renovate my bathrooms!! Thank you Battlecat team-I love my new deck!!"

I am very pleased with the quality of the work, the ease of scheduling, and the wide variety of work completed.  Understand that Mr. Handyman provides a premium service that is worth the price.  No drama, no surprises, no excuses.  The experienced, skilled carpenter, Dean, understood exactly what I needed done, and how to do the work.  Little things matter a lot.  He re-installed a previous, faulty installation of my bathroom shower doors.  Now the frame is securely attached to the tub, sealed perfectly, and the work was done without so much as a single scratch on the tile walls (which is tricky, given that the aluminum frame has sharp edges when removed).  I didn't have to ask for invisible clear calking along the tile walls and white calking along the seam with the white tub, or replacement of a little broken guide wheel at the bottom of the door assembly - these were just done, and done just right.  Consider also the task of replacing a cracked limestone step at the front of my house.  This job was finished perfectly.  The pitch of the new piece is perfect for the spot it is in, the brick underneath was replaced and pointed exactly right, and the seams were sealed.  This is the second time I have hired Mr. Handyman (Dean was the carpenter sent both times) and I'll hire this company again.

"Summary: Bryan did an excellent job building a metal roof over an existing concrete slab in my backyard. I am very happy with the work that he did. In fact I have received compliments from three different neighbors, including one that I had never met before but saw the work being done from the street and wanted to take a look because he wanted to do something similar with his home. I have already recommended him to a friend, who decided to go with Bryan for a project. And I would hire Bryan again for future work. More Detailed Review: I have an existing concrete slab in my backyard that I wanted to build a roof over. Bryan was one of four contractors I interviewed for the project. I decided to go with Bryan because I liked that he was very straight forward and I felt his quote was fair and reasonable. My township requires that either the homeowner submit drawings for the project or that an architect be hired. I am not an engineer and I have never worked construction before. Although all of the contractors recommended that I submit my own drawings because it was a straightforward project and I could save myself several hundred dollars, Bryan was the only one that offered to help me with them, which he did. And this was before I even agreed to hire him. As a new homeowner and somebody who has heard one too many stories of home improvement projects gone wrong, I appreciated the fact that Bryan was very patient and always answered any questions or concerns that I had. In addition, I was always able to get a hold of him by phone or email. And once work had begun, he checked in with me at different stages of the project to make sure that I was satisfied with the progress so far. The start date was delayed a couple of times because of all the bad weather that we had. However, Bryan was very good about keeping me informed during this time and I was always able to get a hold of him when I wanted an update on things. When the project did begin, I was very pleased with how smoothly the work progressed and how everything was completed in a timely fashion. The footings were dug and inspected within a couple of days. Once the footings passed inspection, the frame was put up several days later. After the framing passed inspection, the roof was built and the trim was quickly put up. It is clear that when you hire Bryan to do a job, your project is his priority until it is completed. And I was pleased with how his crew kept the work area clean and professional every day after the day was done. As I mentioned, two of my immediate neighbors saw the work that had been done and were very complimentary of it. This includes my neighbor who has personally done a lot of home renovations on his own house. I also had a neighbor from the next street over stop by and ask to take a look at the work (at this time only the frame had been built) because he wanted to do something similar in his backyard. He was also very impressed with the quality of the work. I am very happy with the work that Bryan did and how professional and reliable he was during the whole process. And I highly recommend him."

"Henry did a fantastic job covering the exterior trim of our house in aluminum. Carpenter bees had really made a mess of it and now it looks brand new. They also replaced the trim around my front door and I like it better than the original woodwork! Henry and his team were professional and cleaned up everything before leaving. I think it was a good value for the money."

Carpentry questions, answered by experts

The cost to convert a carport into a garage averages about $22,000, ranging from about $15,000 and $55,000. Additional cost factors to consider include size, time of year, and how much of the carport you can reuse. Other cost factors include the kinds and amounts of materials used, such as:

  • Add insulation: $1 per square foot

  • Add drywall: $1–$3 per square foot

  • Add window: $450–$2,000 per window

  • Add outlets: $75–$500

  • Add garage door: $250–$11,200

  • Enclose framing: $5–$13 per square foot

  • Replace roofing: $1,000–$2,000

Baseboards don’t have to be nailed into studs. However, nailing them into studs adds to their stability. When studs aren’t available, you can secure them with drywall nails directly into the drywall and adhesive. Always aim to nail into studs, especially in high-traffic or impact-prone areas.

When choosing a drywall anchor, consider the weight of the object you're hanging and how much weight the anchor will need to support. The heavier the weight, the stronger the anchor you'll need. You’ll find the weight capacity on the packaging when shopping for anchors.

Also, remember that you can use more than one anchor when hanging something on the wall. If you're using multiple anchors, divide the object weight by the number of anchors to determine how much each will need to support. If you need help deciding which drywall anchor to use, you can hire a handyperson to hang your objects.

It's possible to turn your carport into a living space, but there are additional factors to address over turning it into a garage. HVAC, plumbing, and electricity won't be optional, and you'll need finished flooring, drywall, trim work, and legal ceiling height, for starters. Also, keep in mind that living space conversions may require upgrading the foundation underneath, and the permits might be more expensive as well.

Yes, ceiling joists are typically load-bearing. However, their primary function is to support the weight of the ceiling and loads applied to it, like lighting fixtures and ceiling fans. They can also help support the roof, especially if they’re part of truss systems. Remember, the load-bearing capacity of ceiling joists depends on the material, size, and space between them.
