Small jobs welcome

"We love our brand new gorgeous kitchen! Our kitchen was getting a bit grungy and worn down, and it was time to spruce it up as an investment to our home. Dave and Christian are true experts in what they do. Our cabinets are gorgeous now. And TFS's cost is much less than many other quotes we received. They were great communicators, friendly, professional, efficient, and did a great job. We highly recommend TFS Kitchens! We are very happy customers!"

"We needed to brighten our kitchen and update from its stuffy 1980's-era cabinets. We considered a full replacement, but the cost and time involved prompted us to consider Ziggy's refacing of our existing cabinets. And we're very happy we made that choice. Ziggy is professional, experienced, skilled, careful and courteous... five attributes you want for such a large project. Although we were refacing existing cabinets, we had some modifications (e.g., replace a desk with cabinets) that he easily handled. Also, there are many small considerations that you'd never think of that Ziggy pointed out, made suggestions, and dealt with. The entire job took only 5 days, minimizing the disruption that's always involved in a kitchen renovation, and the results are exactly what we hoped for ... a bright, modernized new kitchen. We highly recommend Ziggy."

Closets questions, answered by experts

On average, building a custom or built-in closet costs around $2,100. However, the total price can range from as little as $500 for a simple DIY project to $6,000 or more for a large, high-end custom closet. Most projects typically fall between $1,500 and $5,000.

The final cost depends on several factors, including the closet's size, type, materials, and features. Here is a general cost breakdown by closet type:

  • Reach-in closet: $500 to $1,500

  • Walk-in closet: $750 to $5,000

  • Wardrobe: $2,000 to $6,000 or more

Choosing a prefabricated closet system is generally less expensive than a fully custom build. The scope of design and construction services will also significantly impact the price.

Some features and upgrades you can add (some of which increase the closet’s value) are: modular shelving, motion-activated lighting, climate control, custom lighting, cigar humidors, revolving shoe racks, jewelry shelves, custom woodwork, and built-in laundry hampers. While only truly luxury closets have all of these, many custom closets have at least one special feature listed above.

Different types of closets are defined mostly by size. A few different types of closets include:

  • A reach-in closet is a smaller closet that you can stand in front of and reach everything inside it. Aside from the size, the doors and the level of drywall finish are typically the largest price factors.

  • A walk-in closet can be anything from a small 5-by-5 feet closet that has a narrow walkway with shelves on both sides to a 100 square foot bedroom-sized closet with shelving along the walls and plenty of room to move around in.

  • A built-in wardrobe often does not have a door and leaves the clothes and other contents open to the room, whereas a closet usually has a door to separate it from the rest of the room.

To prevent sagging, consider both the material and the span of the shelf. Using sturdy materials such as plywood or solid wood can provide better support than particleboard. Additionally, limiting the shelf span to 36 inches or less can reduce the risk of sagging. For longer shelves, incorporating center supports or brackets can offer additional reinforcement.

You can design your own closet, but it’s usually better to hire a professional to do the work for you. Not only will you get years of design experience to guide you toward the right layout and material choices, but you’ll also only pay slightly more hiring a professional than you would creating your own plans and hiring a carpenter. A high-quality closet designer can provide insight into how to lay out your closet, and they may be able to find you a good deal on the carpentry or complete the work using an affordable, in-house team.
